Out of curiosity, are there any of the CLBB Cookbooks available for new members or perhaps anyone who missed them the first time around? They'd be great for holiday giving.

There weren't "hard" copies of it as pdf files were emailed to those who asked for one.
I have the files on my hard drive - wish I had the original word documents though so I could import them into my software program. :p

Thanks -- please don't go to great trouble though.
Is it too overwhelming to think of compiling a Volume II -- there are probably lots of new members with great recipes who've come on board since the last one was put to bed. It would be great to be able to tie it to a fundraising thing - perhaps with help from the magazine - Last time it was on an ad hoc basis with people being requested to give a charitable donation.

Well last time when it was over I swore I would never do it again, but the grief has mellowed with time ;) I would consider it but not until after the new year. I would also change the way I did it. Instead of a committee/democracy, I would just make the rules and go with it :D

Yup a dictatorship would be the only way to emerge with any sanity :D

If anyone wants to do a hard copy book of all the recipes, plus any new recipes, I have all kinds of book binding equipment (spiral, not comb) and would be happy to do the books. I would only charge for the actual cost of paper, ink, and mailing with no profit to myself. It would be very minimal. Maybe there is an artist on here who would like to design a cover.

Hi Sookie -- I'm not an artist but any stretch but thought I could do some kind of fun cover and maybe frontispieces -- even if it's in PDF, it would be preserved. I also thought we could add actual PICTURES of the food -- heck even actual pictures of the contributors would also be fun.

That sounds like fun. Let's go with it! Just FYI, I have done cookbooks before for charities, etc. There are tons of options for us to consider, but my opinion is that we should just go for it and have fun with it. I don't know that we could get everything done before the holidays, but whatever everyone else decides is good with me. If we end up selling some of our cookbooks (and I don't even know if that's something we should discuss here) we could donate the proceeds to a charity.

JeAnne - I'd be happy to help you pull the cookbook together, type recipes, organize, etc. I know how much work you put into it the last time, and I'm a pro at formatting, typing, etc. :)

I'm not interested in taking over, believe me. I had no idea you already had a hard copy cookbook. Gladly bowing out. :D

Good call JeAnne!!!
You have my full support and gratitude.
Thank you so much for all the work you did on the first one. :)

Hey Sookie -- I can't claim to speak for greysangel -- I think she was posting tongue in cheek as the honor of being "editor" is a position of dubious worth. :D
I don't think realistically anything like this can be done before the holidays but I would assume that it is easier not to reinvent the wheel and just go with what worked the last time in terms of rules etc. I came in at the tag end of it all and don't remember whether the "rules" were officially posted.
The only thing I can add is that it would be great to have pictures or photos of the food -- and these can be pretty easily handled as part of the pdf even if it is just the way a lot of cookbooks handle it with a bunch of photos in the middle.

Let me have a think on all this...I think it would be nice to have a hard cover copy of something, but I want to make sure that with that kind of effort we're able to maximize giving if we make this a charity thing.
I'm also not sure if we could do a hard cover copy with anything saying CL or Cooking Light or CLBB.

Hey per one of my original posts, why don't we contact Jennifer and see if CL would "plug" it. There are also e-commerce sites where you can "purchase" e-books which are essentially pdf books.
Hard bound copies and distribution (at least IMO) becomes very difficult and puts it in another league.

so i did a little research and most fundraiser type make your own cookbook sites have minimum requirements..and that minimum is around 200. I have to be honest, I wouldn't feel comfortable fronting money for 200 and hoping for the best. I did sign up to Lulu.com which is self publishing and there is no minimum..they make a small percentage off each copy sold and you can offer electronic and hard copy versions. The only thing with this would be if people feel comfortable with this as I would be publishing this under my name. I could set up an open fund through something like America's Harvest and have the profits go there with a link that people could see total contribution to the donation.
Thoughts? Maybe I should post a separate thread?

JeAnne, just playing devil's advocate, what's the added benefit to having a hardcopy available? If it's in PDF format, people can just print it out and bind, 3-hole punch or use as they see fit, no? That would save a lot of hassle on your end, whether it be researching a place for printing, guaranteeing a minimum, putting $ upfront, etc.
That said, you could always set up a PayPal account separate for this, and once people make a small donation ($5-10?), they would receive the PDF copy of the book. Might be something to think about. This is your "baby" and completely your call. Just a suggestion to make it easier on you.
Still willing to help in whatever way I can. Even typing ... I can do 130 wpm. ;) Researching recipes, best loved/most posted, editing, whatever.

The hard part was actually not the work, imputting (i'm a fast typist myself) etc.. the hard part was trying to make the best decisions based on the majority. Last time questions arose regarding originality of recipes, regarding copyright issues with recipes from other sources, who introduced them to the board etc..
The added benefit of having a hardcopy available is that some people just want it. They dont want to print it out and bind it etc. They want something that is a finished product. The great thing about Lulu is that they do it as the order comes in so there is no money to advance. Of course the electronic copy would be cheaper.

Well I am with Missindi on this one. It is logistically very difficult to do hard copies. If someone is incapable of printing a recipe and putting it in their own binder, they can burn the pdf file on a CD and bring it into Kinkos which can produce any kind of bound volume they desire. :D
I don't know what the original guidelines were but my motto is -- if it ain't broke don't fix it. Was there anything specifically that should have been modified. If so, let's address that ONE issue - if not, just adopt what worked before.
As to payments etc., we can rely on the good faith of others by requesting a donation or we can designate one or two people who the community feels are trustworthy to be the official gatekeepers -- i.e. after money is paid to their paypal account, the pdf file is mailed. Even though I haven't met any of you, I certainly have no fears that any of the long term posters would divert funds.
If we want to open the giving up to a wider audience, (i.e. if CL publicizes it) then I would think we would have to use a third party payment system for downloads.
However, in no way do I think we should increase the complexity of this project by actually doing hard copies.
