A recipe I found on this site calls for "fish sauce" (Thai BBQ Chicken). What is this and where do I find it - will it be in the regular grocery or a specialty shop? Does it taste fishy?

Thanks!
Kim

I found mine in an Asian grocer. I don't think my regular supermarket carries it. Also, to me it doesn't taste fishy; but it is salty.

I just found some at my regular supermarket - the brand is "Thai Kitchen". The main ingredient is anchovy extract.

I usually find fish sauce in Chinatown. Although the smell is pretty awful, I love the fermented salty flavor. It adds just the right kick to Asian dishes, but I put it on everything- rice, salads, and it's great in different marinades. Just be sure to seal it tight or the smell will invade your cabinets!

You might want to be sure you get a Thai fish sauce for a Thai recipe. The fish sauces from different countries have really different flavors.

A very tasty vietnamese dipping sauce is made from the fish
sauce as well!

The better fish sauce is clearer than the rougher tasting ones, kinda like honey does.

1/4 cup fish Sauce Phu Quoc Brand (Or any brand with a picture of three crabs on the bottle)
1/4 cup rice vinegar (seasoned or not)
Juice from 1/2 large lime
2 tablespoons sugar
1 Tablespoon minced garlic
1 Tablespoon of grated carrot
Hot red chili pepper to taste or omit.

This sauce is addictive!!!
