I am not sure what it is, but I have an Rowenta Iron (about 6 months old) that has this "guck" on the bottom of it. I think DH ironed something he wasn't supposed to (without realizing it) and now it cannot come off!!
Anyone have any helpful hints or had this problem? If I had known about it while it was still hot, maybe it would not be a problem.

Funnybone-
They make cleaners specifically for your iron. Check the laundry section of your store--I get mine at WalMart, 2 tubes for about $2. You put the cleaner stuff on a towel and run the hot iron over it, and it dissolves the "guck".

Actually I went to the website and found the info (I should have checked first) - here it is for anyone with the same problem:
There's build-up on my soleplate
During normal use, a sticky film caused by starch and melted fibers can build up on the soleplate. The Rowenta soleplate cleaner is specially formulated to remove build-up from melted synthetics, webs, fusibles and iron-on trims. You can find the Rowenta Soleplate Cleaner at our main service centers and most places where Rowenta irons are sold.
I'm off to Linen 'n Things now!
You can also guck your iron by not using distilled water - kind of a no brainer but I had to find out the hard way, back when I acutally wore clothes that needed ironing.
