Coffee Storage

A friend told me that coffee tastes better when it's stored in the fridge - is this true? I keep mine in a sealed jar on the counter and it's fine - just wondered what everyone thinks.

I'm not a coffee drinker - more of a coffee drinker wanna-be. But I have it in the house for visitors. Because it lasts a long time around our house, I keep it in the refrigerator (suggested by my sister-in-law, coffee drinker extraordinnaire). No complaints from her, so I guess it's okay.

I used to keep it in freezer but I keep it in the cover now tightly sealed

We used to keep ours in the freezer until I saw this on Starbucks website :
"To keep coffee fresh, store it in an opaque, airtight container at room temperature.
Storing coffee in the refrigerator or freezer for daily use can damage the coffee as warm, moist air condenses to the beans whenever the container is opened. "

As a die-hard coffee drinker, I concur with crlykat. I use an airtight container (or just close the bag very tightly and put a chip clip on it) and leave my coffee on the counter. Granted, this method only keeps the coffee "fresh" for two weeks, max. but it's fine to use for a while after that. Whenever I've tried to keep coffee in the fridge or freezer, it seems like the beans lost a lot of taste.

I have a Braun coffee grinder that stores about 1/2 lb of beans. I keep them in there until I need to refill it. The rest of the coffee is stored in the fridge. I used to store it in the freezer, but then I heard it could damage the beans, so it's been the fridge for about a year. I don't really notice a difference though - perhaps they meant ground coffee can be damaged in the freezer. Since I mail order my coffee, I buy a month's worth at a time. When I used to live in the area, I would only buy a week's worth to ensure freshness.
