I just bought a pretty pair of knee high black boots. What the heck did I do that for???? I don't wear skirts, the only ones I own are hold overs from the seventies. Is it a fashion don't these days to wear slim pants inside boots like this? I'm a fashion failure,
TIA,
Nancy
Do you have any tips on how to keep your pants down inside should I decide to do this?

Nancy it seems that you are right in style! I've seen this on some of the shows on the Style Network - DD loves to watch that channel. The tucked-into-boots look has been shown on the fashion runways since the fall. (See picture).
Consider getting a skirt though, I wear boots with an A-line long (below knee) skirt, as well as above-the-knee fitted skirt with matching color tights. Very elegant.

There used to be a product in the stores for this exact purpose of holding the pant leg down in boots - an elastic band about 3 to 4 inches long with clips on either end. The band goes under the foot, and the clips attach to the end of the pants. Holds the bottom of the pants down, so you don't end up looking like a Russian dancer. As in...

That would be bad.

I bought a pair of knee-high black boots yesterday! I have been looking for the perfect pair to wear with a knee-length skirt I bought last winter. I really don't live in a high fashion area, but I haven't seen anyone wearing their pants tucked into knee-high boots (well, except for at the exhibition grounds where they have equestrian events). I did notice someone on TV wearing the knee high boots with gaucho pants. Not too sure about that look though.
I looked around online and found this article at stylebakery.com (http://daily.stylebakery.com/ask_alison_at_stylebakery/)

How to wear knee high boots this season?
Q. I live in a cold climate that guarantees snow from October through April. I need a good pair of boots (usually two) to get me through the winter season. Usually I purchase flat black ankle boots and sexier high-heeled black knee high boots for skirts or my longer pants when I need some lift. However, seeing the new fall boot styles (like in your fall shoe guide), I’m thinking of branching out. Most of the fabulous fall knee high boots are so pretty, it seems a shame to cover them up with pants. How do I wear these lovely boots? Is it acceptable to tuck my jeans in them to show them off? Or am I still supposed to wear them completely under the pant leg? I’m especially interested in those cozy casual boots!

A. That’s what is so fun about boot-wearing this season, you can wear your boots both ways. Pants tucked into your boots look hip and cool, while long pants worn over the boots so just the front of the boots show is sleek and chic. Be sure to choose a skinnier-style pant when tucking in (no loose fit or flared styles). To keep pants inside your boots wear socks that are tall enough and thin enough to fold and tuck your pants or jeans into. You can also find many textured and colorful socks to fold up over the top of your boots to add even more style.

I think you should have fun with your boots and do whatever makes you feel good! Wearing knee-high boots with my knee-length skirts makes me feel sassy (and I am generally a conservative dresser). You could try it out. :D

Thank you both, now I am dying to try them out! (And yes, I am thinking I need to get a skirt.....now I have reason to).
Thanks guys!

Well, you can bye the short pants, or why don't you buy a pretty skirt for these boots! You will look so good, just try a couple of skirts in the malls, maybe you'll like it?

Seriously, I dig chicks in knee-high boots.
Very _I'm_gonna_eat_you_for_lunch_and_you'll_love_every _second_of_it_.
I've noticed the pants tucked in look, and am appreciative when it's done well. It can go either way. The best look is agressive. I don't know how else to put it.
It truly is a pity men don't have the same fashion opportunities. I could get into clothes.

Something tells me we're not talking about fashion anymore.

In order to pull off the tucked in pants thing I think three things would have to happen:
1. Boots have to be high heeled
2. Pants have to be small enough around the ankle that you're not going to have to wrap the extra fabric around your leg, you'll be able to see the chunky ankle rolls through the boots
3. Boots can't be the same color as the pants
I loooove what I affectionately call my hooker boots, but I don't have the cohones to try the tucked in pants thing. I generally do skirts, but wouldn't be opposed to short goucho pants. Most of the time I just wear them w/ pants. You obviously can't see that they're tall boots, but they are still sexy shoes and they help with staying warm in the cold weather!

FWIW, I do not think that tucking pants in is dorky, but I agree with what Trish said about having to do it right. The other caveat is that this look is not always flattering on everyone. I think that the slightly A-line skirt, matching tights, and knee-high boots look IS flattering on many figure-types, but the "look" you achieve by tucking slim pants into knee-high boots is less forgiving. I am NOT saying you shouldn't try it, Nancy (you might be one of those people who can totally pull it off), but IMO this look can sometimes end up emphasizing areas some people would rather downplay. I'm slim, and I still prefer the skirt and boots look--but that's just me.

Some men avail themselves of EXACTLY the same fashion opportunities. You could always try it... :p ;)

I agree with Honeygirl. Why the look itself may not be dorky, it really depends on your body type if you can pull it off. I'm short, and would never wear pants tucked in to boots - I'd look like I was chopped in thirds - not flattering for me at all. Try it, though, just look in a full length mirror. If you feel uncomfortable then nix it. And if you were going to buy new pants, then like the other posters I suggest a skirt with tights - warm for winter, shows off your boots, can be dressed up or down, and very comfortable.

I'm waiting for the cape to make a comeback. Nothing more dashing than a cape and elegant clasp.
