My DH floods his cereal, then drinks the remainder. Ick.
You can barely tell I have milk in my cereal. I have probably 4 parts cereal to 1 part milk. That way I don't waste it pouring it down the drain!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
I love milk; I just desperately despise floaties in it!!!
Where do YOU stand???

I don't "flood" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif my cereal, but I do drink the milk that's left at the bottom -- after fishing out all the floaty things, of course!
I should also add that my favorite breakfast cereal is soggy grapenuts with a sprinkling of sugar. Maybe soggy cereal-lovers are more prone to drinking their milk?

I love, love, love, cereal milk, and it's a huge pet peeve of mine to see people fill up their bowls with milk and then dump whatever's left over in the sink. Arghh! I wouldn't say I flood my bowl with milk, but I probably have about equal parts milk and cereal, and I always drink the rest. Yum. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I also drink the rest - YUM! I must confess, I also like soggy cereal. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif

I bought my kids plastic bowls with a built in straw to drink the milk with. However, more times than not, they leave more cereal in the bowl, than what they ate. There is no happy medium. I also prefer less milk, but I find the "healthier" cereals soak up milk and get soggy - I love soggy cereal!!

Omigosh my DH does too! He puts shredded wheat in the bowl, fills it to the top with milk, goes to make his toast, get his juice, toast his bagel, feed the dogs, whatever, and I'm pacing the kitchen floor because his cereal is getting soggy!!!

I don't have that problem; I eat my cereal dry!

After I finish the cereal, I drink most of the milk then put the bowl on the floor and my cat finishes the last few drops. She's a bit overweight so skim milk is really the only "treat" I can give her. She now knows the sound of a spoon hitting the bottom of a cereal bowl and comes running! (I can see all of you non-cat people saying "EEEWWW!" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif)

Too funny! This is something I'm actually very compulsive about, to the point that I can't allow anyone else to pour my milk for me.
I like my cereal just barely moistened. I put in just enough milk to cover the flakes (probably more of a 2-to-1 than 4-to-1, Sandy), and I never have any left over when the cereal is gone. And I always take the last flake left in the bowl, soak it in the drop or two of milk remaining, and put it in my dog's bowl, on top of his food. It's a ritual we both enjoy. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
My DH also drinks his leftover milk. It used to gross me out, but in seven years of marriage I've gotten over it.

Ok ok everyone - get offa yer chairs. I do not eat 4 cups of cereal for breakfast. I guess I was using my sugar-to-water ratio for hummingbirds as a measuring factor. I'm good for a cup, I'd say.
I guess I just needed to clarify that fact! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Oh, Sandy, I didn't mean to offend. I knew you meant that as a ratio. By the way, I would probably let you pour my cereal milk since we seem to be on similar wavelengths.

Susie - no way did you offend me!! I just wanted to make it clear I'm not a piggy at breakfast!!! (unless biscuits and honey are involved http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif )

I drink it.
I am kind of particular about the amount of milk in my cereal too. I put in just enough milk until you first see it through the flakes. And depending on the cereal I like it soggy. I don't really like soggy bran cereals, but the rice or corn kinds (like Crispix) I like soggy which is kind of an oxymoron since they're supposed to stay crispy longer!
2:1 ratio and definitely finish the milk.

I have read that you SHOULD drink the milk, because some of the vitamins and minerals that the cereal has been fortified with can remain in the milk.
KathrynY...I do the same thing with my cat!

What a great poll! Looks like a lot of us are picky about the cereal:milk ratio thing.
I typically don't have much leftover, but when I'm feeling especially generous, I let my cat lick the bowl. I know it's not a good habit for him, but he just absolutely loves it. Plus, he just looks so cute cleaning milk drops off his nose :-)

Another "good to the last drop" cereal milk drinker here! (mostly soy milk - Silk brand - Yum!!) Does anyone else occasionally use OJ INSTEAD of milk on cereal to kind of shake things up now and then? This tastes especially good on low-fat granola! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I love my cereal milk, as long as it is still cold. I have read though that many of the nutrients from the cereal are left in the cereal milk, so it is a good idea to drink it. (I can't for the life of me remember where I read that tidbit so take it with a grain of salt)

I read that the vitamins in cereal are just sprayed on so you have to finish the milk if you want the vitamins. I also have the bowls with straws for my kids. I make them finish the milk to get the vitamins.

I used to drink it, but now I've gotten into a groove where I manage to put JUST the right amount of milk on my cereal where it's neither drenched nor dry- EXCEPT Life Cereal... for some reason I can't help but eat it directly out of the box! I remember doing so as a kid, instead of cookies or ice cream for dessert after dinner, I'd eat dry Life Cereal. As a matter of fact, I had a cup when I got home today!

I don't use a lot of milk, but I do drink what is left when I finish my cereal. I use a spoon to get all the leftover milk as does my DH. What I can't figure out is how DD (age two) learned how to drink her leftover milk straight from the bowl?

I just use a little rice milk in mine. If theres any left I throw it out but its usually so little its not a big deal.

i like my cereal crunchy: i put just enough milk in to moisten it, so that when i finish the cereal, there's a small puddle left of milk in the bottom. i drink the left over milk most of the time.
I feel guilty about throwing milk away, so I try not to use more than I need. I also take spoonfuls with less cereal and more milk as I get to the end. But if there's a little left, I toss it. I'm not sure if it's becasue it is no longer really cold, because it may be sweet or flavored by the cereal, but I cannot stand the leftover milk. And I hate soggy cereal. I used to love shredded wheat when I was a kid, but the last time I ate it was the bite sized as a dry snack in college. I sometimes eat cereal dry with a glass of milk on the side.
BTW, what do the other 8% do?

I drink it! I usually pour my milk until the top layer of cereal starts to float a little. I would not say that I like soggy cereal, but I don't like dry crunchy cereal either. It drives my husband crazy for some reason that I always thoroughly stir my cereal into the milk so that no dry pieces are left before I start to eat. I thought everyone did that. But then again... he ate his cereal dry until he met me. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

I think I might be with that other 8% because I never have to face the decision of whether or not to drink the milk. I love lots of milk in my cereal and usually I have to add milk at the end cause I've run out before I finished the cereal. I somehow manage to finish each together(after I add the additional milk) so nothing is left at the bottom. Sometimes I have to take in less milk with the cereal at the very end in order to make this happen but I just kind of do it automatically. I'm weird, I guess! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

It never occurred to me that one would NOT finish the milk along with the cereal until I was nearly grown-up and saw someone dump the remainder of the milk down the disposal. I was appalled! Couldn't they figure out how to make it come out even? Anyway, by the time I cut up my banana over my cereal, then add a handful of craisins and pour on the skim milk, I couldn't bear to leave any of it. I hate to admit it but I have the same thing nearly every day for breakfast -- I think it's because I just don't want to be faced with any decision-making at that hour of the day. Anyone else do this?

My brother used to do this alot.He discovered in his twenties that he was allergic to milk (all components, not only lactose). Considering that up until that point, milk was his favorite drink, you can tell how dissappointed he was. OJ became his ritual. Oddly enough, about 6 years later, my brother contracted Typhoid fever while in India. Suddeny his allergy was cured! He was able to eat milk products with no reaction. odd huh? I wouldnt reccomend the Typhoid fever, he sure seemed to like the OJ thing. Personally, I'd rather use milk, preferably soy, and as little as possible. My family didn't believe in wasting, so if I didn't want to drink the milk with soggy cereal components, I had to learn to limit how much I put in. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Curious though, we got into a discussion about this over the holiday weekend with my nieces and nephews....

Add another milk drinker here! I don't like my cereal soggy though, so it's just enough milk to cover and then eat really quick, so it doesn't have time to sog up!

I drink it, definitely. It's the only dairy I get all day (besides supplements). I use about 3/4c. skim in my cereal so there's probably 1/4c. left at the end. I don't do it when visitors are around, but alone, bottom's up!

I would drive Emilycat crazy!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I usually have milk AND cereal left in mine! I can't stand the soggy parts at the bottom.
However, I've finally realized that I need to start putting less cereal in my bowl. My problem is that I like to mix cereals and THINK I'm putting in just a little, but by the time I add the last kind, I've got a full bowl!
I'm getting better about judging amounts, but I never eat that last little bit - it makes me GAG!

Sort of on topic; lindrusso, your too-much-cereal dilemma reminded me of this -- I've gotten much better about calorie-obsession, typically estimating much of what I eat, but I still measure my cereal. Most people's concept of a "bowl" of cereal is actually 2 to 3 servings, so I've never been able to trust my estimations. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif

I am one of those soggy cereal lovers. I don't even pick up the spoon and start eating it until almost all of the milk has been soaked up by my bran flakes. SO I never have the problem of left over milk in the bottom of the bowl anymore. However when I was younger and in my pre-soggy cereal days every time I got to the bottom and there was milk left I would just add more cereal and keep repeating the process until the milk was all gone.

WendyW= Have you tried your cereal with Lactaid milk. Now they have 100% lactose free milk besides the 70%. They have 1%, 2% whole and fat free.
PS Theres also Lactaid cheese (in the aisle where American cheese is)

DH & I both drink the leftover milk, although I do leave a teaspoon or so in the bowl for the cat to clean up.
BUT, he uses way more milk and cereal than I do. Boxes of cereal that contain 15 servings? For him, it's about 5. He eats massive bowls of cereal, and just as much milk with them. And he is SO particular about cereal bowls -- we are still in search of the perfect cereal bowl for him. It's gotta be the right shape and the slope of the sides have to be angled right so that the milk to cereal proportion is perfect, and the milk covers the cereal the right way, and it can't have a lip on it, etc. Aaarrrgghhh!!!
I only add enough milk to push the top layer of cereal afloat. Could be because I despise soggy cereal -- it's gotta be crunchy, crunchy! (likewise, my ice cream has to be hard as a rock -- no melty, soft ice cream, it's gotta be hard enough to chew!)

This post keeps popping up to the top. I might as well put my 2cents in. I don't add very much milk when I eat cold cereal (which isn't very often). I prefer oatmeal with sugar and plain soy milk. Any leftover milk gets drank up.
Actually, I think a far more pertinent issue than what you or I do with our cereal milk would be what does Martha Stewart do with her cereal milk?

Unless she makes her own, you're probably right. What I was thinking, however, was that surely she'd have some innovative idea as to what to do with all that leftover milk... you know-- Honey-Nut Bread pudding, Wheatie Soufflé...something along those lines... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
