I ordered a new lamp from Crate & Barrel for a console table, very happy with it, but not so happy with the white WHITE shade which I'd like to replace quickly.

Exactly what measurements are critical to buy a replacement?

And any good websites with shades would be appreciated.

Top width, bottom width and height, but especially the bottom width and the height.

Hey, Bob!

Not sure what style you are looking for but since you bought the lamp at C&B I thought maybe Pottery Barn might do...

Thanks, Beth; I'll work from that.

Thanks, too, Susan; almost all my other lamps are Pottery Barn, so that was the first place I went to and the selection is, oddly, pretty poor. I've found a number of things at lampsplus.com that might work.

Bob, if the shape's what you want, maybe consider painting the shade and saving a ton of $$. (Hear me out, I know it sounds hideous!) I inherited a multitude of CRAP when I bought my house but one of the things I kept was this funky old lamp with a drum shade. I didn't want to shell out the $$$ for the only drum lamp shade I found that I liked, at PB. So I decided I'm going to throw this thing out anyway, HEY let's go to Michael's and get some fabric spray paint and see what happens. Found some fabric spray paint in a nice chocolate brown with what they called 'webbing' in it, so it looks like cool old textured paper. Again I know it sounds 80's scary but really quite nice. Lent my digital camera to SIL or I'd take a pic for you. Good luck!

I'll second the suggestion of working with the shade you have, at least until you find something you love. As well as spray paint, you can also get fabric paint that you brush on. I used some to paint stripes on a plain white shade for a lamp in DD's room and it has held up really well. You can also find a lot of nice trims at a good upholstery fabric store and use those to really change the look of the shade.

If you want to replace the white with more of an old linen color, try tea dying before you discard it. If it is silk this should work. Google tea dying for some sites with instructions
