What exactly do you serve along with beef stew? All I could think of was making bread bowls to serve the stew in...

Are there any other common pairings?

I serve whatever wine or beer is in the stew and a nice loaf of homemade bread (I'm one who prefers his bread on the side). Nothing else is really needed with a good stew.

Corn bread :) Or Popovers...the nice thing about these wonderful treats are they are very simple and as the cool the sort of collapse on themselves creating a small indentation just begging for a good dip into the stew.

We usually have it over egg noodles or mashed potatoes. You could do rice, as well.

Bread bowls sound great, or I would have done biscuits on the side. Or over wide egg noodles. Sounds great for the type of chilly day we're having today.

I usually serve bread and a salad with beef stew -- along with red wine. Sounds like a perfect meal for the cold and rainy weather we're having today.

Since I put potatoes in my beef stew, I don't like to serve another starch. Salad is good, since some fresh greens go great with a heavy stew. If there are no potatoes in my stew, then noodles or bread are good.

Tossed green salad and bread or corn bread would be good choices.

I find stew kind of rich, so I put some cooked egg noodles in my bowl to lighten things up, a ladle full of stew and then some cooked peas (which DH will NOT eat in the stew). DH just eats a cauldron full of stew and is a happy man.

Lots of red wine for me as well!

my mom always did one of these, unless she put taters in the stew--
then she just served another veg on the side, and a starchy dessert like cake.

Great ideas thanks!! I think I'm going to make a quick trip to the market and pick up some fresh crusty bread and a salad. The stew does have potatoes in it... so perhaps bread on the side is better then a bread bowl.

Thanks again for the ideas. I am a first time stew maker (made the Oven Beef Stew posted on this BB)...and wasn't really sure what you eat with it (I was deprived of stew as a child).

Thanks again!

I haven't made beef stew in years because when I was growning up my mom made it so often I got tired of it. Guess it was affordable back in the day. After taking a look at this recipe, I just may give it a try.

I grew up eating plain sliced white bread with it but now I like to make biscuits to go with it.

I make this corn bread with it usually. Popovers sound really good too though.

Sour Cream Cornbread

1 cup self-rising cornmeal
1 (8 ¾ oz) can cream style corn
1 (8 oz) carton sour cream (or nonfat plain yogurt)
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
¼ cup vegetable oil

Heat a lightly greased 8-inch cast-iron skillet in a 400 degree oven 5 minutes.

Combine cornmeal and remaining ingredients, stirring just until moistened.

Remove prepared cast-iron skillet from oven, and spoon batter into hot skillet.

Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden.

A little late, now, but I would serve homemade bread or biscuits with this meal (potatoes in the stew or not) and I would also set out a big bowl of oranges or clementines to finish it off. The fruit adds a cool and tangy component to the meal which I think is very complementary.
