My engagement ring is started to look a little less sparkly than when I got it...what do you all use to keep your jewellery clean?

I have an old glass spice jar that I keep under my sink. When my rings need to be cleaned, I put a capful of ammonia in it with some warm water and let my rings soak for 5 minutes. Then I brush them with an old toothbrush to get the "crud" off. :p It's nothin' fancy but it sure makes them sparkle!

I do something similar, but put glass cleaner in the jar since I'm more likely to have that than straight ammonia.

I have a jar of that jewelry cleaner that I plunk my rings into when I get home. I also have an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner that the rings take a spin in now and then and once a year they make at trip to the jeweler's for a professional cleaning and prong-checking.

I love shiny diamonds. :D

This sounds good and easy- would this type of method work to get silver rings that've become tarnished/dark clean? Or is this method that you and others speak of mainly for getting stones clean? The rings I have are all silver. TIA!

Rebecca, another option is to take it to the jeweler who made it for you- they may be willing to clean it for you while you wait, gratis. I lived in the town where we bought my ring for a year after we were engaged, and the jeweler told me to come back anytime. DH's uncle is a jeweler in Illinois and he said this is a common customer appreciation thing.

That said, now that I live elsewhere, I use Windex and a very soft toothbrush. :)

Now I have a small ultrasonic cleaner which I love, you just can't put soft stones in it...but when I had my diamond ring, before I sold it after my divorce, I used rubbing alcohol, a soft toothbrush, and held it under the tap...worked like a charm :D

I just use a toothbrush and toothpaste. Works great.

Thanks for your concern...no, I haven't had my biopsy yet. Come to think of it, I'm wondering why not. I'll give a call tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I bought some ammonia and a soft toothbrush today so I can have SPARKLY gems again! :D

Didn't get an answer to my question posted above, so hope you don't mind if I ask again- Is the method you all are talking about (e.g. toothbrush and ammonia or window cleaner) just for gems? I've got silver rings that are dark with tarnish and wonder if I have to buy silver cleaner or if there's a simpler way. They have intricate cutouts so they will be a little tricky to clean. TIA!!

My uncle used to work at a jewelry store and he's always recommended that you soak jewely in warm water with a little dishsoap in it then use a toothbrush to scrub it clean. I've seen him do it on gold, platinum, etc., and everything comes out shinier!

I'm not sure about how to clean silver, since my rings are gold. I'm interested though because I'm planning on getting silver for our 20th anniversary this year. ;)
