Embarrassed to admit this but... DH and I had our very first smoothies yesterday morning and we're HOOKED! I was wanting to make something with our two 'last day' bananas and our fresh strawberries. I followed CL's Banana & Mango Smoothie recipe from March '01, just substituted strawberries for the mangos, and added a tsp of sugar at the urging of someone on the BB. I froze the strawberries for about an hour first to firm them up, and DH thought he'd died and gone to Fruit Heaven!

I bought some Vanilla-flavored Soy Protein powder yesterday to use in place of the Nonfat Dry Milk next time, and I already vac-packed and froze my remaining strawberries for our next smoothies. Does anyone have any favorite smoothie recipes? We liked this one because it didn't call for yogurt, which we don't always have on hand, but we could stock up if necessary!

DH is now trying to figure out if he can freeze peaches, and which fruit they would go well with! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif I've created a monster!

I don't make too many smoothies, so I am not an expert and I don't have recipes per se. However, I figure if you can buy frozen peaches, then you can freeze your own.

My favorite way to make them is:

1 frozen banana
handful of frozen strawberries
equal parts (about 1 cup each) Harmony Farms vanilla soy milk and orange juice

Sorry, I don't measure anything. The orange juice really gives it a kick!

My family LOVES smoothies! My two year old always gets excited when I make 'moo-ies', as he calls them. I don't measure my ingredients either, but one of my favourites is:

banana
handful of frozen strawberries
about 1/4 c. apple juice
about 1/4 c. orange juice
splash skim milk

Another good one:

banana
handful of frozen strawberries
choc. syrup
couple ice cubes
splash of skim milk

There are so many different varieties - I'd love to hear what you come up with.

Lisa...

I have added chocolate syrup, too.
When my dd was younger she called them "boopies"

funny this topic should come up today. I recieved the following mysterious recipe in my email today.

First, I would like to know what is almond milk and has anyone heard of this brand Fit for Life?

Second, what could possibly happen when this shake begins to melt?

Banana Shake

1 cup almond milk (Fit for Life)
2 medium bananas -- frozen

Blend and serve, then drink slowly. Something special happens when this
shake begins to melt.

Yes! Peaches can be frozen. My mom and I pcik a lot of fresh fruit every summer, raspberries, blueberries, marionberries, and peaches. Mom peels and slices the peaches, sprinkles them with a bit of Fruit Fresh to keep them from browning, and zips them up in a frezer bag. If I am a REALLY good girl, I can talk mom into making me a peach cobbler in the middle of winter.

Here's another
YOGURT FRUIT SMOOTHIE

1/2 cup frozen vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup fat free milk

I can't remember where I originally found this recipe.

I too am a recent convert to smoothies! Here's my favorite so far:

Smoothies
(recipe from the back of the Whole Foods 365 Day Berry Medley Bag)

1 cup frozen Berry Medley (strawberrie, blackberrie, blueberries, and raspberries)
1 banana
1 cup juice (apple, oj, etc.)~ We like apple!
1 cup milk (regular, soy, rice, etc.)
1/3 cup frozen yogurt ~ We like Stoneyfield Farm's nonfat frozen raspberry!

My additions: 1-2 tbsp. flax seed oil and 1 tbsp. wheat germ

My toddler LOVES these too! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Enjoy!

Fit for life is a cookbook by Marilyn and Harvey Diamond. I've never made almond milk, but I can post the recipe if you'd like.

Aw Jewel...don't be embarrased! You see I am a Smoothie virgin. Its nice to say that word again! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Anyway, its probably because I don't have a blender. I had one at one time but it was one of those appliances that I used maybe once or twice a year. I've been thinking about getting an emersion blender some day so maybe that would work.

I did a search for you and found a couple of threads with recipes.

I have a smoothie everyday for breakfast. I always start with frozen strawberries and then add whatever fruit, dairy, juice etc I happen to have on hand. This morning i used cottage cheese and thought I would write in and say DON'T DO IT!!! Blech. The texture is awful.

Thanks for all the tips!! I thought I'd share a friend's favorite recipes also. She said she uses two bananas, a cup of skim milk and a TBS of Vanilla Soy Protein powder...and a squirt of Hershey's Syrup! YUM! That sounds so good!

She also freezes pineapple chunks and mixes frozen pineapple with orange juice and the protein powder. Her favorite, however, is frozen chunks of Honeydew melon with apple juice and the protein powder. This is going to be fun!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
