I posted this over on the smoothie thread, but I thought maybe it would be better to make a separate topic.
I recieved the following mysterious recipe in my email today.
First, I would like to know what is almond milk and has anyone heard of this brand Fit for Life?
Second, what could possibly happen when this shake begins to melt?
Banana Shake
1 cup almond milk (Fit for Life)
2 medium bananas -- frozen
Blend and serve, then drink slowly. Something special happens when this
shake begins to melt.

2g Protein; 55g Carbohydrate; 0mg Cholesterol; 2mg Sodium
Food Exchanges: 0 Grain(Starch); 0 Lean Meat; 0 Vegetable; 3 1/2 Fruit;

I love bananas and I enjoy almond flavor, so I am really interested in this recipe (I am not just posting it for fun). If I could find almond milk I would make it!

One of my favorite coffee shops serves almond milk, but I've never seen it in the grocery store. Of course, I've never looked for it either...

I've seen almond milk in a few stores around here (So Cal) and in TJ's near the soy milk. From what I understand, it's kinda the same idea as soy milk, but from almonds (duh!).
As for something special, perhaps it becomes more decadent?? (I'm reaching here...)

Went to the Fit for Life website, seems they sell enzymes for good health. Claim to be all natural with all sorts of health benefits as a result of spending mega bucks on their products. The site is still under construction and there was nothing on the page for Other Products. Seems like just another fad to me!

Valerie,
I have a book called "Fit For Life" by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. They have kind of weird ideas about healthy eating and they don't like dairy. (I could not live without cheese) Anyway they have recipes for smoothies in their book and they also have a recipe for almond milk....it's probably not what you were expecting; but here it is.
FRESH ALMOND MILK
1/4 cup raw almonds
1 cup of cold water
2 tsp. pure maple syrup (optional)
Blanch almonds by adding them to a large skillet containing 1/2 inch boiling water, allowing them to sit in water as it boils for about 30 seconds. The skins will loosen noticeably. Drain and pop skins off. Place blanched almonds in blender with 1 cup cold water. Run blender at high speed for 2 to 3 minutes until a thick white milk has formed. If you are going to drink almond milk straight, strain it through a fine sieve. If there is a lot of pulp, you have not blended long enough. If you are going to use the milk in a shake, there is no need to strain.

Valerie,
And who'd a thunk...all you had to do was call Mom! But I do agree that they have some odd ideas after visiting their website!

thanks mom! No, not quite what I thought. But I would be willing to try it just to find out what happens to the shake when it melts! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif

Who is the e-mail from? Is it some type of add intended to get people to buy almond milk?

Hi. Your local health store will have almond milk. Basically its a non dairy alternative also lactose free.In several glutten free books I have seen it as art of ingredients.
As for your question what happens when the smoothie begins to melt? It probably starts separating. The frozen banana is used so you won't need ice cubes, but as it starts thawing all smoothies pretty much start "separating", I just take a spoon and stir. It probably mentions drinking slowly as smoothies are filling and quite cold.
Some info:
Naturally Almond Non-Dairy Vanilla
Made from Pure Cascade Mountain Water and Real Almonds, this smooth, sweet beverage is refreshing and a great non-dairy alternative. In Original and Vanilla Flavors, these drinks are 100% Lactose Free and Cholesterol Free. The Almond Vanilla is included on the Gluten Free product list, but the Original contains Malt (Barley) for coloring; thus it is not gluten free.

I use almond milk because I can't have milk and I hate rice milk (allergic to soy as well). I use the Almond Breeze brand made by Blue diamond almonds in the original flavor and LOVE it. You can actually drink it by itself and not gag!!!lol.
