I wanted to know how everyone stores their knives. I want to buy a magnetic knife strip to hang on the wall. The block thing won't work (no counter space), plus I wanted something a little different.

Thanks,

Karen

We'll assume you're not in California. With significant seismic activity, don't know that I'd want knives on any kind of magnetic thing in my house.

Since I did find a place for a block, that's my preferred way of storage, and the idea of finding little finger pieces in the drawer with loose knives just doesn't sound appealing. Can you either find an in-drawer form or shallow block or mount one either on the bottom of a cabinet or on the wall? Or maybe the magnetic thingy will work great for you...

Gail,
I found something called a blade cage..has the same concept as a block with the knives going into it..the blade would be showing (you mount it on the wall). The blade part is covered by a metal like "cage". It will work perfect. SO said he can make me one so it will match the kitchen.

Thanks for your reply.

I have my knives stored in two places -- one is a traditional wooden knife block. The other is a cutting board with a built-in knife drawer below the cutting surface. The cutting board is attractive enough to keep out in the open -- and it's super convenient to store some of my more well-used knives in the same spot!

I keep my knives on a counter on two knives blocks. This way they are close by and easier to use and store.

That is my whole dilemma...I have a very small kitchen. The only cabinet space I have is the one next to the stove. I have a pantry where mostly everything goes. I have three doorways coming into the kitchen and a double window..the only wall space is over the stove..where the knives are going. I've organized it pretty well, the knives are my last issue.

I guess I could always move for a bigger kitchen..but I love my house!

I've been in my house for 15 years and have the same magnetic strip, with about 6 knives, including a Chinese cleaver. I love it. Those blocks take up too much room and you have to pull out every knife until you find the one you want.

Karen - sounds like the magnetic strips will be a good solution for you. The only other thought I have is, I've seen some under cabinet storage blocks. Ones that mount right up under your cabinets - I probably would have done something like that if I'd seen them back when I used the strips. Otherwise - go for it!

I also have my knives in two knife blocks on my counter. I am going to have to consider another method or put my blocks in the cupboard. DD is getting tall enough now that together with her little stool, she can almost reach the back of the cupboard where the knives are. She knows that they are sharp and are "owie, boo boos", but you never know when she might try and grab one. I hate to put them in the cupboard since that is really inconvenient, but better that than a trip to the ER!

I store mine in in-drawer knife blocks. I'm a clutter freak and like my counter tops clear, and because I have plenty of drawer space this works for me. I think the blocks hold twelve knives. I've used the magnetic strips in the past (yes Gail - even in caifornia!) and that was fine since I didn't really have another option (very limited space), but I really like them put away.
