View Full Version : help-asap sub for oat bran
I am making some oatmeal bread and it calls for i/4 cup of oat bran in addition to oatmeal, whole wheat flour[I'm using www] and bread flour. I don't have any oat bran[that stuff is vile  on its own]. TYIA.

oat bran Substitutes: wheat bran (drier, less appealing flavor than oat bran)

It was never meant to be eaten "on its own." It adds a wonderful sweetness to the right muffin or quick bread recipe, especially.
I'd think that either wheat germ or real bran would substitute, though you might have to adjust flour or liquid depending on how the dough feels as you're pulling it together.

Thanks, Tyra and Defender! I just added extra oatmeal. I hope that works. By the way, Bob, DH eats that as a hot cereal, and dang it , there aint none in the house! :)

I'm sure it will be fine without. I am always subbing various brans, flours and grain products with whatever I have on hand. I can't imagine that 1/4 cup would make that much difference.
Thanks, Kathy. I have made this bread before, but I have always had oat bran on hand. This recipe is from a bread machine cookbook that you bake in the oven. The BM machine sounds kind of labored right now, but the dough is soft.

I have often eaten it when there is no oatmeal in the house and there are directions right on the box for making hot cereal...

Hey! Hey! Relax! Eat what you like however you like, but I have to believe that like wheat germ and wheat bran, it wasn't meant to be eaten on its own.
Bob
Yes, Susan, I have eaten it too, but only to be doubled over in cramps 3 hours later. ] Bob, I agree with you; oat bran is an additive to breads and muffins. I will let you know how the bread turned out.

Heh. I have hot oat bran with a banana sliced in for breakfast every morning. It helps with things, if you know what I mean.

Add 2 T. of ground flax to the mix and you'll have even more help. Plus, you won't have to have fish quite as often as flax is high in Omega 3s.

LOL, well, geez, even at age 62, this still isn't a concern, thank goodness.
Maybe it's time to increase your bean consumption? :)
Bob
I put one huge loaf of bread into the oven, so maybe subbing the extra oat meal didn't hurt it. I'll let you know in a 1/2 hour or so.

Oh, gawd!
what has my bread thread turned into? ;)
MMM, eating a slice of warm bread. Subbing the oatmeal for oat bran made no noticiable difference. Right now it is very crusty. TY for the help.

Okay while we're on the subject of Oat Bran, I finally got some yesterday, I have never tried it but I've been procrasinating on using it in a recipe for a while. Please describe to me what it tastes like eating it on its own? I saw a box of Oat Bran that had a picture of it warm in a bowl. It almost looked like cream of wheat but much more wheatier?
Also Vbak, don't hold out on us, Post that recipe lady! THanks ;)

Just to chime in here...
My box of Hodgson Mill Oat Bran actually says "hot cereal" on the front of the box with a picture of a bowl of hot cereal with berries on top.
I tend to alternate between oatmeal with sliced bananas and oat bran cooked up with TJ's frozen berry medley for breakfast. I really like it! Give it a try.
For you naysayers out there, if you like hot cereals, then you would probably enjoy it, as well (I feel like I'm preaching to my kids, actually DH is more difficult than the kids (nothing green, ugh)).

You're right. Oat bran has the consistency of cream of wheat but tastes like oats. I like it much better than wheat bran. I often add it to my pot of cooked cereal I make once a week.
