I'm going to make key lime pie and want to use fresh limes...so how many do I buy if I need half a cup? I know this can't be exact, but an estimate would be helpful.

Thanks!

I don't know for sure, but I thought I remembered Alton Brown saying one average lime equaled approximately 1/2 cup. Just to be safe I'd buy two! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Wow, the limes at my store must be very small, because I can only get about 2 T. per lime, if that.

Well now you folks are making me question what I heard... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif. Alton says the same thing that Emeril does, which is make sure your lime (or lemon) is at room temperature, and ROLL the heck out of it on a counter before juicing. Now that Linda made me think about it, maybe it was the lemon that was 1/2 cup since they're generally bigger. Oh heck, I don't know! (blush) Anyone else????

I'm with Linda on this one. The limes we get around here are neither very large nor particularly juicy. That 2 tablespoon guess is pretty much on the nose.

The limes in my area yield not quite 2 TB. I wouldn't suggest microwaving them for more juice. I've found they are just to small and tend to dried up inside! You can put it on the countertop and roll it with the palm of your hand to break up the juices inside.

I just bought 2 yesterday and they were really small also. I think I'd need about 5 of the little suckers to get 1/2 cup!

The limes I've been getting lately have been pretty juicy; I've gotten about 3 T. out of them. But if you're going to be using Key Limes, they're quite a bit smaller, so you'd definitely need more.

I'll weigh in at about 1/4 cup per lime. Jewel is right: Roll the heck out of it before juicing it.

And also, the heavier the lime (or lemon, or orange), the juicier.

Are you going to use regular limes or Key Limes? There's a very big difference in the taste. If you can, buy the Key Limes (very tiny, about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter). They're more expensive but much better for Key Lime Pie. They come in a bag, and it's probably enough for 1 pie.

I don't think I've seen Key limes up here. How do they taste?

According to the Sunset Chicken recipe I recently made (from CL), 4 limes equals 1/2 cup. I got slightly more than that.

I did roll them before cutting them to juice them.
