Does anyone have a recipie for the fourth of July that is red, white and blue, that is not a dessert?

All I can think of are the red, white, and blue tortilla chips. Maybe you could use those with a dip for an appetizer? Just a thought...

Do you consider fruit a dessert? If not, how about watermelon, blueberries, and honeydew melon?

Hmm ... the problem is always the blue, if you re looking for something that s not a dessert. All I can think of is the red, white and blue tortilla chips that Susan suggested, with three accompanying dips: salsa (for the red), a sour-cream or yogurt-based dip (for the white), and something darker, like the forest mushroom dip from the Jan./Feb. 2000 issue, or like guacamole (for the blue). Neither of these last ones is close to blue (unless you used some vile food coloring) but with the rest of the platter looking so convincing and thematic, it just MIGHT work. I think I m stretching it here... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif Anyway, just a thought. Happy Fourth!
Just thinking - you could also set out the tri-color tortilla chips with the red and white dips, and then have a separate platter nearby with crackers, bagel chips or cut-up bagels and blueberry cream cheese.

I am /personally/ appalled by this thought, but you could make red/white/blue jello. (I'm not a jello fan).
Use clear gelatin flavored with pineapple for white; cherry, strawberry for red; and that newish blueberry for blue.
It's an idea...

What about potatoes? You could make a potato salad using new potatoes in red, white, and the purple ones they have could probably pass for blue. I love new potatoes and potato salad is a pretty traditional 4th of July dish........

How about serving the salsa and sour cream that Natasha suggested on A BLUE PLATE! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Yep, I sure will. If I remember. Sometimes when I get home from work my mind is a complete blank. I'll put a sticky note on my purse.

Here's the onion recipe:
Marinated Red, White and Blue Cheese Onions
1 large red onion, cut in thin wedges
1 large Vidalia onion, cut in thin wedges
3 large shallots, thinly sliced
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
3 oz crumbled blue cheese
1/2 cup minced fresh cilantro
1/2 cup chopped toasted walnuts
salt, ground red pepper, to taste
Separate onion wedges; transfer to a large bowl and add shallots, oil, vinegar and cheese. Cover and refrigerate 24-48 hours. At serving time, add cilantro, walnuts, salt and red pepper and mix well.
This recipe is from the Omaha World-Herald from June of 94. No nutritional info unfortunately, but the recipe does say it makes six servings.
The recipe also notes to serve piled atop bread, as a topping for burgers or steaks, or as a side dish.
If you decide to try it, let us know how it turns out.
I was copying JeanneW's R-W-Blue recipe and input the title as a potato salad. Maybe red and white potatoes with blue cheese and a vinagrette dressing?

Oh, oh, oh. I have a recipe for Red, White & Blue Onions. I'm at work now, but I'll type it up when I get home. It uses red and white onions with a vinaigrette-type dressing. The blue is blue cheese. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds intriguing. It would work as a side dish or a relish.

This sounds intriguing... do you think you could send it when you get home? Thanks, Lisa
I'd vote for the potato salad too but how about a fruit bread with a white flour base and blueberries and red huckleberries (or cranberries) for the colors? I make baking powder biscuits with fresh berries when they are in season and they are very nicely colored. frozen berries don't work as well.

I can't think of any blue food, but you could do what Martha Stewart does: put a tiny flag in it or make the presentation red/white/blue.

Hi again Irobar. You didn't mention beverages but what about a white champaigne with a few raspberries (or strawberries) and blueberries. This would work for any clear non-alcoholic punch also. Another idea, this time for an appetized is brie with blue grapes and red bell peppers.

This is probably too late for a 4th cookout, but I just got back from the grocery store and they had purple-bluish bell peppers. Of course, at $3.49/lb I would use them sparingly!
