These girls love their red wines & I'm the "only" non wine drinker in the group. What would you serve? Not too pricey please!

Need a little more info, what is the menu? Can't tell you what to serve if we don't know what you are trying to pair it with.

See that's how little I know about wine!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's an Italian theme and all recipes will be from cooking light mag. Don't know what everyone's bringing yet but does that help?

It does help, intalian and red wine go together like hand and glove!!

Try to find an italian Chianti, thats an imported italian red wine, and try to get one that has a black rooster on the label or the paper tape that seals the cork. That shows that it is from the Chianti region of italy. You should be able to fine one for less than $15.00, most any good wine shop or wine section of your market should be able to help you find one if you describe it as above. Key words: Chianti and Black Rooster.

(Chianti is pronounced key anti )

Absent that, try a Californian Sangiovese, thats the grape that Chianti is made from; Nocetto Vineyards makes some great ones.

Or a good Syrah would work too, Cabernet would be too heavy and too expensive for a really good one.

There's a Shiraz type of wine by "Fat Bastard" (French wine) that's really good - fruity tasting.......also "Yellow Tail" Cabernet Sauvigan (sp??) is a really good red wine too..............

My husband and I have been drinking many Cabernet/Merlot blends (he prefers Merlot, I prefer Cabernet, so we both get a wine we like without having to open two bottles!) We really like Rosemount Estates Cab/Merlot (all their wines are good, and have been given good reviews from Wine Spectator), Yellowtail makes a nice cab/merlot as well.
Chianti is a good choice too, and definitely something that goes very well with Italian food. My Italian in-laws always serve Chianti with dinner.

Thank you so much for the great suggestions! It's good to know there are some affordable wines that will work well with our theme. I saw an ad for Yellow Tail wines in our local grocery store too!

If you're doing an Italian theme, I'd definitely stick with Italian wines. It's not like Calif or Australian wines won't be good, but it's just part of the fun of having a theme. You should be able to find a bunch of chianti's and sangiovese's at really good prices ($10-15).

There is a dirt cheep South African red "Obikwa" that I was completely amazed with. Half the price of Wolf Blass
