View Full Version : What's the difference betwee corn tortillas and white corn tortillas?

I took a Mexico City cuisine cooking class in which the instructor said that white corn tortillas are actually the norm in Mexico, and that yellow corn is sort of an American thing. So if you like the white better and are making Mexican or Mexican-inspired dishes with it anyway, I suppose the white only makes it more authentic!

No flour whatsoever is used in corn tortillas-- they're just made of masa and water. So, I don't think there's much of a difference between the white, yellow, or blue corn tortillas, nutrition-wise. In general, as long as you choose corn tortillas over the white flour kind, which are often made with lard, you're choosing the healthier option.

Thanks for all the info! I'm trying to be good about cutting out things like white bread, etc. for the more natural and healthy whole grain stuff. I'm glad the white corn tortillas don't fall into this category. And I do like them better than the yellow corn ones. Thanks again!

I hope this isn't a stupid question. I made the three pepper quesadillas that are on the recipe search last night. The recipe called for corn tortillas (which I have bought before) but the only thing I could find was white corn tortillas. Is there any difference? What about nutritional value? In all honesty, I liked the white corn better than some of the corn ones I've tried before. I was just wondering which one was better for you (I'm thinking of that thread awhile back that said stay away from all things white - bread, potatoes, flour, etc.).

White corn tortillas are made from white corn and I prefer them in taste to yellow corn ones. The nutrional values should be the same.

White tortillas are made with white flour, where corn tortillas are made with either yellow or white corn. White (flour tortillas) are used for buritos etc. Corn are mostly used for tacos or a side dish.
