Evite (http://ww.evite.com) is a great web site for electronic event invitations. I was interested to see this article about additional features. I know the "how much alcohol should I have for the party" question comes up here occasionally, so I thought I'd post.

Evite adds drink calculator, other tools

NEW YORK (AP) -- The events invitation site Evite is adding features for planning parties, giving hosts such tools as a drink calculator to figure out how much alcohol to buy based on whether guests are light or heavy drinkers.

Hosts enter the duration of the party and the number of light, average and heavy drinkers attending. They also specify whether they'll serve beer, wine, liquor or any combination. The tool then calculates the number of cases or bottles needed.

A chart is provided to substitute alcohol with soda or juice, but amounts must be manually calculated.

Another tool lets hosts automatically set budgets for food, drinks, decorations and entertainment, based on the number of guests, duration and the party type - baby showers and birthdays are among the options.

Evite, traditionally a site where guests can RSVP and see who else might be showing up, is now also providing recipes, wine-pairing guides and checklists as part of a redesigned site launched this week.

So how do the hosts know how many light, average, and heavy drinkers are attending? Is there a box people are supposed to check off when they respond, categorizing themselves? Or a question with a space to type in the number: How many drinks are you planning to have? I just don't see this "tool" solving the problem.

You couldn't have posted this at a better time! I'm planning a party for next weekend for 25-30 guests and had NO idea how much alcohol would be needed. Of course this isn't an exact science, but it does give me a ball park figure.

The party that I'm throwing will be attended by people that I've socialized with many times before. Believe me when I say that I don't need them to check a box, I know exactly which ones prefer their whiskey expensive and straight up!
