A co-worker recently had a baby, and we are making meals for her family while she's in the hospital. I've been assigned dessert duty for a meal next week.

There are three boys in the family under the age of 12. What kind of desserts might work for them? I don't have kids, and don't know what they eat. I really want to go with homemade things, because I really enjoy cooking.

My only restriction is that, for some reason, cookies and I don't get along well.

Second vote for the Rice Krispie Treats ! I've never met a kid yet that didn't love those things. Even my 41 year old kid! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif If you want to kick them up, add mini M & M's to the mixture.

Also another vote for brownies, but maybe spark 'em up a bit? Either the Ooey-Gooey Peanut Butter Brownies (what kid can resist anything with the words 'ooey-gooey' in the title?) or Mint Chip Brownies ? I made those for a party and they were a MAJOR hit with the kids as well as the adults. I cheated and used TJ's No Pudge brownie mix, which is my fatfree favorite, and added Guittards Mint Chips to them. These mint chips aren't chocolate mint, they're just mint, so they're green! Kids at the party loved the melted green spots in the brownies. (Said they looked like boogers, but we won't go there! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif )

You might want to ask the mom. All of the above are great, but I made peach shortcake for a family last year and they all loved it. CL butterscotch bars are great. There's a great CL banana cream pie that my kids love.

Ooooooo yeah! Rice Krispies treats! I love those!!!! Uh, I mean, I'm sure the boys will enjoy them. Yeah. That's what I meant. But I'll have to test them first. hehehe....

I have a friend who is a wonderful cook. She does fabulous yeasty cinnamon rolls every Christmas. But she cannot make Rice Krispies treats, even with a recipe right in front of her. One of life's little mysteries.

Rice Krispie treats sounds like a winner--with some vitamins for the kiddies too.

Otherwise, kids love anything with lots of goopy icing, cakes with holes poked in and jello pudding drizzled inside (sounds horrible, but kids gobble this up.) Toll house bar cookies. Not the traditional cookie, but more like a brownie.

Aren't all desserts kid-friendly? They are in my house?? Anyway, I can second the Rice Krispie treat or brownie suggestion. One other plus of the Rice Krispie treat (besides they don't require baking!!) is that if you use margarine, they are perfect for kids that might be allerigic to dairy.

How about these?

Cakes In A Cone
No mess treat for children's parties. Looks like an ice cream cone. Use any flavor cake mix. Original recipe makes 24 cupcakes (24 servings). Recipe has been scaled to make 24 servings.

You could make brownies w/ a twist, put the batter into mini muffin tins and press a pb cup into the center before baking, or place some batter into a reg muffin tin (lined) and bake, immediatly after baking press a hershey kiss into the center, return to the oven for 30 sec to 1 min, just to slightly melt the chocolate.

I also think the eclair cake is a great kid dessert, my kids and all their friends (all 13 or younger) love it.

Good Luck, Ann

Most desserts are popular with my 3 year old. But avoid nuts and coconut. It seems like a lot of kids aren't fond of them. Mine isn't and I know I didn't like them as a kid, either.

This is a great present!
