I bought a bag of hazelnuts at the grocery store on Sunday. They were on sale for .50. So, how do you crack them? I'm ashamed for asking but I've only eaten them never prepared any!
Thanks for all your help guys!

With a handheld nutcracker, usually metal, available at any grocery store in the gadget aisle. Hunted for a picture for you. Hope it prints. They have fancier ones, too, but for more money.
P.S. It's the same gadget you use to crack lobster or crab claws.

I remember growing up, the only nuts my parents would buy were the ones that were in their shells. I don't know if it's because they thought that they were fresher that way, or the unshelled variety were not as common as they are now. I on the other hand can't remember the last time I had to shell a nut, although I do have a couple of nutcrackers in my drawer. Brings back memories. :)
