I am in the process of having my kitchen redone, does anyone have or know much about the sub-zero fridges? We are very interested, however, quite an expense - are they THAT good?

We are builing a new home and I thought I just needed one. When I checked out the prices - they were like $6000 more expensive than my tried and true amana that I have now. $6000! (I wanted the one with a water and ice dispenser.)

I have had two sales people even tell me that they thought they are not worth the extra you spend on them. I was shocked to have sales people tell me that!

The sales people said it is a great refrige - don't get me wrong - but if you have a budget that has limits - like we do - the $6000 might be better spent on something else!

But then again - I don't have a sub zero and what I might be saying might be laced with a little bit of jealousy!

In our new home - I think we will stick with an amana - which I love and we'll get a cabinet depth refridge - so it won't stick out from the cabinets.

Good luck.

I always felt that the main advantage to a subzero was the size, especially the width that can be used for party trays and such. Whether you need that is really a matter of how you cook and entertain. If you would be getting a more normal size, I can't see it, and I'm the one who's about ready to spring for a $1100 washing machine.

If you do need some extra width, but want a normal size fridge, look at the new Maytag with a Z-shaped door. It is extra wide on the top of the fridge side and wider on the bottom of the freezer side, so you have some space for wider items in both sided of a side-by-side. And it comes with water and ice dispensers. I think it is priced on the higher end of the mormal side-by-sides.

My mom had one & always hated it. Not sure why. I personally would rather get the new type of dishwasher that has 2 compartments & granite countertops for the price of the fancy fridge! Or maybe a really great cooktop, or double hung ovens....

I have had 2 side by side GE frige/freezers. Yes it has water and ice thru the door. I took out the icemaker container, this gives me another big shelf, but the water in the door works by itself. We do NOT use a lot of icecubes, and you have to keep emptying the large container. Not for me. My son has a newer (1year old) GE but he has the flat front, no water thru the door, and he took out the icemaker as well. Those things take up a lot of freezer space.
FYI Amana is beeing bought by Maytag!!! Anyways, looke at GE!

I thought it was more important to put the extra money into the cabinets and details such as mouldings, granite island top, and corian counters/sink, etc. We bought Jenn-Aire appliances instead (double oven, cook top, dishwasher and counter depth fridge) and I am really happy with them.

I would have liked to have a few of those "drawer" refrigeraters, but we didn't even bother to to price them out. Even though we built our house, my husband has a job that can transfer him at any time, so we didn't want to put more money in the appliances than necessary.

Well, I'm one that splurged on the Sub-Zero. It's all fridge but looks like a side by side. I never seem to have enough fridge space and have two freezers so didn't need one in the kitchen. The largest freezer will be in the laundry room. We got the fridge for less than retail because Conn's isn't going to handle them anymore so they took an offer from us and accepted it. I don't think Sub-Zero is making them anymore because I couldn't find it on their website.
We are not limited by a budget and since is the last house we will live in we both decided to build the dream house we'd always talked about. I can't really give an opnion because the house still isn't completed!
