Hi All,

Now that it's hot, hot, hot, I'm looking for some smoothie recipes. I've never made them before and I would like to get my kids to try them. What are your favorites?

Thanks!

I make a smoothie almost every morning....its so easy, I don't have a real recipe but this is what I do and its super yummy, while also giving me a great fruity start to the morning. (Its also a refreshing snack.)
Put the following in blender:
-One small carton of yogurt (peach is my fave)
-One Banana
-Add one large handful of frozen fruit. (you can use anything here. I always add mixed fruit) ***Frozen is important because it gives it a thicker consitency.
-Add enough orange juice to cover.
-Blend until smooth and fruit is crushed.

I found this in an old Southern LIving (july 97) I bought in a church bazaar this weekend...Enjoy

Orange banana
1 pint orange sherbet
2 bananas sliced
1 c orange juice
3/4 c milk
2 tab honey

1 c fresh or frozen strawberries
3/4 c blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 c raspberries (fresh or frozen)
2 tab sugar
1/2 c cranberry juice
1 tab lemon juice

Here's one you can try -- simple and delicious:

1 cup crushed & frozen pineapple
1 container yogurt (plain, vanilla, or pineapple)
1 banana

I usually make my smoothies with silken tofu, as the health benefits are so good. Some things I've tried:

1/2 block soft tofu
1 cup pinapple
1 banana
Coconut milk (enough to get smooth consistency)
-----------------
1/2 block soft tofu
1 cup or so strawberries/raspberries
1 banana
Milk or soy milk (enough to make smooth)

There are a lot of scrumptious combinations. I'm not a big peanut butter fan, but you could try adding peanut butter to a banana smoothie -- which should be a huge hit with your kids if they like peanut butter.

Thanks for all the great suggestions - they all look so great & easy! Sometimes it's the simple things that confuse us.

The peanut butter suggestion is a good idea Lorilei. Unfortunately, one of my sons is allergic to peanut butter. Since I grew up on peanut butter, I cannot imagine never having a peanut butter & fluff sandwich - but that's another topic altogether.

Thanks again all - I'll be revving the blender this weekend.

Hi!
When I don t have much time, I turn to the Mix and Match Smoothie Guide that appeared last year in Runners World magazine. It was prepared by their nutrition columnist. This is a slightly abridged version of the Guide. While it looks long, it really isn t, and it gives you the flexibility to come up with whatever combinations you like (however wacky), or whatever is compatible with what s in the fridge, or whatever combo your kids like!

All you do is add 1/2 cup of crushed ice or ice cubes (add more later if needed) to:

2 or 3 of ANY of these fruits (you can double/triple up on fruits if you like):
1 medium, peeled orange; 1/2 banana; 1 cup of strawberries, 1 cup of cubed cantaloupe, 1 medium kiwifruit, 3/4 cup pineapple, 1 cup blackberries, 1 cup raspberries, 1 cup sliced mango, 1 cup cubed papaya, 1 medium peach, 1 medium nectarine

PLUS 1/2 cup of any of these juices:
orange; grapefruit; pineapple; cranberry; guava; prune; tomato; carrot; kiwi-strawberry;

PLUS 1/2 cup of any of these frozen treats:
fruit sorbget; sherbet; fat-free frozen yogurt, or reduced-fat ice cream (flavor of your choice)

PLUS ANY OF these protein boosters (optional):
3/4 cup nonfat, plain yogurt
3/4 cup soy milk
3/4 cup milk

PLUS any one or two of these flavorings, fiber, etc. such as:
1 tsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp ground flaxseed (you can grind whole flaxseeds in the coffee grinder)
2 tbsp ground nuts
1 or 2 tbsp wheat or oat bran (this will make the smoothie thick, so add more liquid)
1/2 tsp grated rind from any citrus fruit
dash of cinnamon, vanilla or nutmeg

Hope this helps!

Kelly-Have you tried soy nut butter? It is peanut butter, (without the peanuts) made from soy! I tried it, and it tastes similar.

I make my smoothies with frozen fruit and soy or rice milk.

For each serving: One frozen banana, a few frozen strawberries or other fruit, and about a cup and a half of vanilla rice milk (can get low-fat enriched). You can also replace some of the rice milk with juice. It's become our weekend breakfast ritual.

Hi Kelley. Yum, these recipies are making me hungry. I throw a handful of oatmeal (raw and not instant) in the blender along with the yoghurt and fruit for a little extra nutrition and fiber.

Hi! I just started making smoothies for my husband for breakfast. We both liked the Blackberry Smoothie from October 1998. Except I didn't have any apple juice, so I substituted cran-grape juice instead. It made it really tangy. Yum! Yum!

Blackberry Smoothie (CL Oct'98)

2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
1 cup plain fat-free yogurt
1 cup apple juice
1/4 cup honey
1 large ripe banana

Combine all ingredients in blender; process until smooth. (They said to strain the blackberry mixture through a sieve to discard seeds. I didn't. It seemed like one added step, plus that's extra fiber, right? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

You guys are great - thank you so much for all the suggestions.

No Susann, I have not tried soy nut butter with him yet. I'll have to look for that.

Someone else suggested a hazelnut spread. We know officially that he is allergic to peanuts, but are not sure about other nuts yet. At his age (7), I think it's better off to tell him "no nuts" instead of confusing him with the ground nuts vs tree nuts rules.

There was a posting on the old BB asking for smoothie recipes. There was a site someone mentioned that has lots of recipes. I can't remember who gave the site but here it is for Smoothie Central. www.quiknet.com/%7Empenwell/smoothie.html (http://www.quiknet.com/%7Empenwell/smoothie.html) LOL

Kelly-
"Peanut Wonder" or "Better'n'Peanut Butter" is soy-based, and low-fat (unlike the other soy butters, and it tastes really good!

For a more tropical-flavored treat, I like to throw the following into a blender:

1 mango, cut up and frozen
1 frozen banana
OJ to the desired consistency
(pineapple-orange juice is also tasty!)

Here's another smoothie idea. It kinda tastes like an ORANGE JULIUS ( assuming they sell these great drinks in the states).

1/2 pkg soft tofu(~5oz)
1/2 cup frozen orange juice concentrate(thawed)
1/2 cup water
1 md banana(ripe)
1 tsp vanilla
5-8 ice cubes

In blendar process all of the above until smooth and frothy. serve immediately.

this is also a great way to sneak tofu( a great protien source) in, no one will even know it's there!
