Did any one else hear the interesting story on NPR radio this am about the yellow beans from Mexico? I had never heard of them, but the person who grows tham said she grew up with them in Mexico, and once you taste them, you will never eat pinto beans again. I was driving and couldn't write down the name. The story was about a patent dispute with another grower, but apparently they are available in the SW and California. Anybody ever tried them? I guess they really do have a yellow color.

I didn't hear the broadcast, but the beans you're looking for are probably Canary Beans (frijoles canarios). I usually get the Goya brand beans, which you may be able to find at a supermarket with a Mexican/Hispanic food section or at a specialty store. If not, try MexGrocer online: www.mexgrocer.com (http://www.mexgrocer.com) . Indian Harvest ( www.idianharvest.com (http://www.idianharvest.com) ) used to carry canaries and other yellow beans, but my last run through their web site didn't turn any up.

I don't know whether you'll never want pintos again -- every lovely bean can have its own place in one's heart and mouth -- but the canaries sure are good. I also love the Dominican Reds. (I'm speaking of beans, of course, not Communists or a baseball team. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif)
