View Full Version : Which holiday has the best candy?

I was buying my weekly Peeps fix at the store today and had to restrain myself from buying a bag of those pastel, candy-coated malted chocolate eggs......mmmmmmmmmmmmm...and it made me realize the Easter has the BEST candy out of all the candy-related holidays: Peeps, pastel eggs, Cadbury Creme eggs and every variation (my new favorite is the new Butterfinger egg)...

So what's your favorite candy holiday?

Mint M&M's at Christmas closely followed by the Easter sweetarts in the bunny and duck shapes.

I think Easter has the best candy. There are peeps, Russel Stover Creme eggs, the little malted eggs, jelly beans...

I voted Easter because of those Reese's eggs. OMG! Now I think they make them for the other holidays too (like Christmas tree shape.....or is that holiday tree?), but I think they started as Easter :)

Easter.. especially the jolly rancher jelly beans and the cadbury mini eggs :D

Oooh. This was a hard one. To me, Christmas and Easter both have equally wonderful candy. I ended up voting Easter because being at the mercy of my hormones, am craving a See's chocolate egg, which won't be showing up for a few weeks. If it is there now, I don't want to know. ;) I've never been too terribly fond of Peeps, but I love those chocolate covered marshmallow thingys and jelly beans. They had some really cool new Hershey kiss flavors for Christmas, I wonder if they will for Easter.

Absolutely Easter...I'm hooked on Reese's eggs and Cadbury Creme Eggs. I despise jelly beans and Peeps (in case you didn't catch my very strong opinion on the recent Peeps thread... :) ) but all the other tasty goodies make up for it!

I'm a sucker for the Cadbury Creme Eggs. I actually just found a 4 pack I had stashed away from last spring, while cleaning out a cupboard. You're the only people I have told about this. ;) :D

I pretty much agree! I can't stand Peeps or jelly beans, but I love those gorgeous malted eggs and any Cadbury product. Easter is definitely my favorite. :)

Without hesitation, Easter! I love Cadbury eggs--both the Creme and Caramel. I saw them at Target on Monday and totally had to resist the urge to load my cart up.

Halloween is just anyday candy. Easter is special. :) Cadbury Creme eggs are too sweet for me, but I love love love the Reese's eggs, and I don't complain if the Easter bunny brings me jelly bellies, either.

And Wendy, now you have me totally craving a See's egg with bordeaux filling. Mmmmm.

I voted Christmas. That's when we get all our holiday goodies from the Dutch store. My mother and I order together and when I get my stash, I basically inhale everything then eat my Mother's on Christmas Day.

Ea-ster! Ea-ster! Ea-ster! :D reasons: 1. there's a much greater variety of candy available (not that i like most of it); 2. i love, love, love the large, old-fashioned hand-made chocolate eggs that can be ordered with kids' (anyone's) names on them.

Wow Stephanie! We have similar taste buds candywise, but I've never tried the Reese's eggs.

I think you could fill a brussels sprout with bordeaux and I'd eat it. :o

The Reese's eggs are just glorified peanut butter cups, but the chocolate coating is much thinner and so there is more PB goodness, IMO.

I can't stand Peeps, but I voted Easter, because the candy I look forward to all year round is Cadbury mini eggs. I try to buy it up while it's in the stores to enjoy throughout the year...but it never lasts. :D

Christmas candy is homemade and about equal with other treats, so I don't consider it a "candy" holiday.

Stephanie is right that Halloween is just everyday candy.

And valentine's day just brings back memories of the truly awful heart-shaped-boxed candy that my dad would pick up at the last minute at the drug store. Green-creme-filled "chocolate"...*shudder.*

Oh yeah, and they make those Reese's eggs in a Mounds version. DROOL :o

Stephanie, I am with you on the Cadbury eggs. They seem too sweet for me too, but everybody else I know likes them.

Another Easter vote here! I don't eat Peeps (but think they are v. cute), but I love the Reese's eggs, the Cadbury creme eggs, and yes, those See's eggs! My grandmother used to always send me one for Easter when I was a kid. Yum! :) They have Easter candy here, but none of the above-mentioned favorites....note to self, make request list for Mom! ;)

Halloween. How can you fault all those different types of candy? Snickers, jelly beans, 3 Muskateers, Smartees, and the list goes on.

Eeewwww !! Creme eggs & Peeps both give me the willies. I'm surprised they're so popular. My mother raised me on Peeps & still goes nuts over them every year. And, don't hate me, I can really take or leave chocolate. I never finished my chocolate bunnies as a kid.

I could eat jelly beans all day, though. They have to be the quality jelly beans, not just the plain ol' Walgreens kind.

I don't associate Christmas with candy at all. It's a baked goods holiday (which is my fav b/c I much prefer baked goods to candy)

That's funny. I bought a box of chocolates on clearance the other night. The box was so hideous and had lace and a large red rose on the top. It looked like it was made out of the material sympathy arrangements are made from. The $13 box cost me $3. :D Since I'm allergic to some of the chocolates and have to throw them out, I hate paying full price. Then there's the asthetics... I just must not be the sentimental type.

I'll take all the Snicker's Eggs!!! Much better than the Snicker's candy bar. :D

I voted O.O. (one of 2 so far...). We don't eat much candy and generally just buy dark chocolate. My favorite candy is (was) the Dark Chocolate M&Ms, plain or peanut. The only time they sell them is during the release of a new Star Wars movie. :( I bought 10 bags when the released the last movie on DVD... they're stashed in my freezer.

Halloween is not just your everyday candy - don't forget CANDY CORN. That alone makes Halloween my vote. I *love* candy corn.

I'm with SusanMac - Cadbury creme eggs and Peeps are vile, IMO. I'm just not a huge fan of Easter candy.

I found one bag of these last year and stashed them in my freezer, and DH ate them even though he doesn't even like dark chocolate! He said he would buy me more and looked guilty when I told him they don't make them anymore.

I vote for Christmas because I love the homemade fudge and peanut butter balls and all the mint candy. Then again, we don't buy Easter candy so I can't be a fair judge.

I think I'm one of the only ones voting for Valentine's Day!
To me, it all tastes better 'cause it came with love. (Sentimental that I am.) And yes, I think the heart-shaped boxes are thrilling. (!!! I guess to each his own!)
This year I got a box of the new upscale Russell Stover product "Private Reserve" in a heart-shaped box (along with a couple other chocolate items). Very happy with DH's selections! :)

You can’t get See’s here, so my aunt sends my Dad See’s for Christmas every year. When we go to the farm for the holidays, my sister and I thought it was just some box of generic chocolate my Dad picked up at Dollar General or something. This year we found out they were shipped special by his sister, cause he loves them, and misses them from his childhood growing up in CA. After finding that out, I don’t think we left that many for my Dad this year. He’s gonna have to start hiding them before we come home.

Speaking of regional candy, I keep sending my mother Marshall Field's Frango Mints b/c I don't know when theyr'e going to end! I mean, I don't know if they're going to continue the tradition and have them become Macy's Frango Mints. So, we just have to keep eating until we find out for sure.

So, I picked up a bag of Robin's Eggs and a Cadbury egg today. Can't eat either of them. I've come to appreciate depth in my chocolates, and nothing that says "Easter" to me has that depth. Bleh.

Did anyone try the dark chocolate reese's that were out for about a day last spring? Yum.

I can't believe that they would be STUPID enough to stop manufacturing Frango Mints. I live in hope that decide to make them available in all Macys since I don't have a Chicago connection any longer to send them to me.

What's a See?

Candy that is available in the West that for some reason unknown to me, most people adore. I can take it or leave it (and usually leave it)

Here is a link (http://www.sees.com/) to their website.

Did anyone else catch Frango's during their brief time at Target and Mervyn's? That was years back and didn't last very long, but they all had a common ownership and it made them available everywhere.

I had always thought Frango's were originally from Frederick and Nelson (aka the Crescent for several years) in Seattle.

Suzy - you are right...but since Fields has had them for over 75 years now, I think most of us associate them with Fields.

Regardless of where they started, I want some! Anybody want to send me a care package ;)

I have to go with Easter too, those reese's PB eggs...yum... yeah, they have the trees at christmas now, and all the other flavors, white chocolate, fudge (which I may have to try) but there's some perfection with the high ratio of peanut butter with chocolate coating. I stick mine in the freezer and eat them for breakfast at easter, hey, they are eggs right?

I think all of Chicago would stage a mass protest if Marshall Fields stopped producing Frango Mints. We're still reeling from the name change.

Micah - thanks for the offer. I need to see a lower number on the scale before I order any Frangos (even though I would have 3 helpers, my two sons and my mother :D ). Maybe this will give me the much needed incentive to loose weight

Count me in on the Easter Creme Eggs. I had a small bag of mini ones for... uh... lunch today...

To my sorrow, though, I haven't seen the (swoon) white chocolate Cadbury eggs around stores this year. Just some sucky Caramilk Cafe things, blah. I may have to take a drive out to the Cadbury outlet store (danger! danger!) sometime during the season. :p

I too appreciate the dark, rich, single-malts-of-chocolate... but Creme Eggs are different, somehow. They appeal to another side of me.
