Please help! ! I recently ruined my computer and bought a Mac Mini to replace it. I'm slowing getting used to it, and like it much better...until I realized I couldn't use MasterCook on it! Any suggestions on comparable recipe organizer software I could use now?

Very wise move. :D

I tried several recipe organizer applications and decided on MacGourmet.

You can download a demo to see if you like it. It's got an interface like the iLife stuff and it's very user friendly.

There are a number of MAC people on these boards who are also using it.

If you do a search, you will find some threads discussing it and how to use it. The developer is very responsive to questions also.

I want to say congratulations also. Is it as great as they say? How big is your screen?

I'm switching to Mac soon. It took me 2 years to talk my DH into it. But its in writing in my birthday card!!! I think I want a 12". Any thoughts on that  ?

I second blazedog's recommendation about MacGourmet. In fact, I heard about it on the CLBB. :) Lack of software is one of the few negatives about owning a Mac. You would hope that the more people switch to Mac, the more software (like Mastercook) will offer Mac versions.

Enjoy your new Mac!

That's a REALLY small screen so it would depend on your need for portability. The chief advantage of the small screen is its portability.

If you are planning to use it as a desk top replacement rather than doing a lot of traveling with it, I personally would opt for a larger screen.

As with any laptop, you are trading off functionality for the size as the standard desk top models give you much more for the same amount of money. The laptooks aren't currently using the new chip either which would be a consideration.

However, as with any purchase, you should go someplace to take a look at the stuff in person and then decide.

Amazon has an older version of MasterCook for $3.00 that is Mac Compatible. Says it's new in the package.
Here is the link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0871777096/sr=8-12/qid=1141051978/ref=sr_1_12/103-9364139-8631018?%5Fencoding=UTF8

I don't use any recipe software, so I wouldn't know if it's any good, but wanted to throw it out there. Maybe some Mac users will chime in if it's a good one to get for 3 bucks.

Appreciate your good efforts but the Mastercook owners stopped upgrading for MAC at System 9 and MAC's operate on System 10. Although MAC's do come with emulation software that can run System 9 software, it's really not something one would want to do - those who have ever run "Classic" on their new MAC's will understand why. :p

As for software availability, there is a LOT of software available for MAC's but it is generally not sold in stores or widely advertised. Go to the Apple site and there is a database of software available. You type in the subject matter that interests you and the choices come up.

Most "major" software is made for MAC's such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Adobe's stuff (Photoshop etc.).

Thanks Blazedog, I appreciate your advice. I was thinking small because I want to carry it easily. My husband thinks at least 15 inch?

I have the 14 in ibook laptop and I LOVE it. My roommate has the 12 inch ibook and the screen is just so little. I really like the 14 in better. And it is very easy to carry around, put in a backpack or laptop case, etc. The extra screen space is worth the teeny bit of extra weight to me!

I don't know how the new Apple laptops will shake out once they have all been upgraded to the Pentel chip.

Currently the iBook comes in 12 and 14 inch versions and the Powerbook comes in 15 and 17 inch versions.

The Powerbook is more expensive and is considered to be the "professional" model -- it's Titanium and the iBook is white.

At one point the chips were different as the iBook lagged behind with a G4 chip while the Powerbook ran on a G5 chip which was faster. The configurations are also a little different.

I went through this when outfitting two kids for college -- One opted for the 14 inch iBook and one wanted the more powerful 15" Powerbook.

Thank you everybody for your advice...I will try MacGourmet...I'm totally at a loss without my software.

I love my Mac, just so nobody's confused :D I noticed a lot of people discussing laptops...I would love to give some advise on screen size, but my new computer is a desktop! Sorry!

Thank Again!
