My kids LOVE yogurt, so I just bought a used yogurt maker because yogurt is so expensive at the store. Because it is used, I don't have any directions or recipes with it.

My yogurt maker has five 6-oz. jars and is called a Thermostat Controlled Saltan Yogurt Maker.

Any advice or recipes you could give me would be so much appreciated.

I don't know how much this will help you, but I have instructions for making yogurt completely /without/ a yogurt machine. Generally, with a machine, you simply add milk and a yogurt starter (usually some purchased yogurt) to the machine. In a specified period of time, you'll have yogurt.

The home process is similar, and I'm hoping it will at least give you some idea of the process... You might even decide it's easy enough to do /without/ the machine.

MAKING YOGURT

Heat 1 quart of low-fat milk to the boiling point for one minute.

Cool to 115 degrees F.

Carefully mix in 2 tablespoons of purchased plain yogurt.

Pour into a crockery bowl.

Cover tightly with plastic wrap and set in a warm place (such as the oven). An ideal temperature of 110 degrees F will hasten incubation..

Check yogurt in 5 to 8 hours. Tilt the bowl to see if yogurt holds together.

Chill for at least three hours. Yogurt should be more firm now and ready to use.

TIPS:
Yogurt will be watery if it sets for too long a time or you use too much starter.

The longer you incubate, the more sour it will be.

Assuming you made a typo in the product name - you could go to Salton's website
http://www.salton-maxim.com and see if you can request the directions or look for recipes, etc.

I used to make a lot of yogurt and I found that if you add in a little dry milk powder to the warm milk, the yogurt is a little thicker and richer.

Do yogurt makers still show up at garage sales and such? We don't have garage sales in out area, but I used to see them. My son has been asking about making yogurt.

Thanks for the tips. I'll see what I can figure out from here.
