Because of swim practice, b'ball, etc., we are always on the run in the summer, and don't always get lunch or dinner at a proper hour. I usually throw in a bag of Wheat Thins or similar, but am trying to get away from the trans fat. My 11 yr. old won't eat fruit. Any ideas for easy portable snacks that can keep kids going through the day?

That is a tough one.

How about pretzel rods, cheese sticks, gogerts (I freeze them and pack them in a cooler), those yummi fruit snacks, peanuts.

Good luck - i will be curious to see what other ideas people have!

I found some good organic cookies in the health food section at Wegman's. No trans fat. They were Richard Scarry chocolate and vanilla. I just didn't show the box to anyone and they ate them up!

What about cheese strings, strawberries, yummy granola bars, nutty butter sandwiches (nuts blended in a food processor with small amount of oil and syrup; yummy and children can help prepare).
OR veggies with dip, milk pudding or yogurt, roll with slices of cheese in seperate ziplock bag, applesauce, muffins, flakes of salmon with mayo and red food colouring for a really pink sandwich!
Nectarines already peeled, kiwi, raspberries and other types of fresh fruit mixed together. Seedless watermelons are always a hit!
Celery stuffed with cottage cheese.
Plain yogurt sprinkled with wheat germ and mixed with fruit pieces.
Tuna salad on a tomato slice or devilled eggs. I hope these examples were helpful!
Also, just a reminder that preschoolers can easily choke on grapes, raisins, seeds, weiners, etc.. Aa a result, grapes should be chopped in half and weiners should be cut lengthwise until children are approximately five years of age.
Enjoy!!

What about dried fruits like cranberries or cherries. They're almost like candy!

Thanks for the good ideas -- it will help. They are really loving hummus now, with whole wheat pita.
