View Full Version : Oscar Fashion -- looking like a good year for Go Fug Yourself

Just browsing through Oscar.com. Nothing in the red carpet pics gave me a thrill (though Ang Lee and his wife in matching tuxes were cute as buttons) and there are some horrors.

Sandra Bullock -- is that a stocking sticking out of the top of her corset?
Michelle Williams appears to have been put together out of those geometric puzzle pieces.
The bodice of Amy Adams' Herrera gown -- WTF? "Whoop -- not quite big enough. Let's put another bustier on top!"
Gary Busey looks like "that guy the kids walk round the block to avoid."
Dolly Parton looks like a toilet paper hider doll.
and then there's Naomi Watts, wearing the finest in used hospital bandages.

Erk.

I also thought Rachel Weisz looked nice. On the other hand, I see they've added a shot of Charlize Theron, all .... wrapped up like a gift Mercedes in a giant bow??

Oh. And Felicity Huffman, in a gown which makes absolutely clear not only that she has nothing up top, but that her nothing could really use a little something to help it out.

And what's with the wrapping the hips? C'mon. If it makes even size negative Hollywood lollipops look a bit chunky, you KNOW it's not a good idea.

But Jane Russell looks classy.

Gumbeaux, at first I thought you doctored up that pic, but I see that it is for real!!! She would actually look quite lovely sans gaudy lipstick. Shame.

I didn't think there were any truly BAD ones tonight, not like there usually are. Granted, some of them could have done better (the shoulder thing on Charlize, Salma's squeeze and Felicity), just no "what WAS she thinking?" Except the guys ... Tim Burton anyone?

Jessica Alba could put on a paper bag and still look gorgeous:

I thought Jennifer Lopez looked great:
http://www.eonline.com/Features/Awards/Oscars2006/Popup/Pics/Images/20.anthony.lopez.jpg

I didn't think Michelle looked bad... very refined, and a daring color amidst the safe choices:
http://www.eonline.com/Features/Awards/Oscars2006/Popup/Pics/Images/05.ledger.williams.jpg

Jennifer Garner looked fantastic. I felt so bad for her when she tripped ... especially in front of Jennifer Lopez, but she came out with a quick quip. :)

Tons of beiges and browns this year. Loved Rachel's speech, and Reese's. :)

And the opposite was true for Uma. Saw the picture on Oscar's website and the dress looked more pink, and her eyes darker, but when she presented a few minutes ago, it looked a lot better.

I agree. I thought that Jessica Alba's dress was too close to her skin color on stage but it looked fine on the red carpet. It's a shame that a dress has to look perfect under two entirely different lighting conditions.

Just wish she would have gone with a soft peachy lipstick, the red clashed with her tangerine dress.

Reese's dress was very pretty, her speech was thoughtful and I was glad she mentioned Joaquin and her husband. An all around classy woman.

I kept waiting for a brightly-colored dress (beyond Michelle Williams and Salma Hayek). We don't have great reception of ABC, but most of them looked beige - would it have killed someone to wear red? I didn't see anything all that atrocious, just dull.

LOVED George Clooney's acceptance speech!

I was pretty disappointed with the coverage on the red carpet. E! was there all day, yet didn't see that many people once the stars started arriving. Isaac Mizrahi (sp?) was the only one I saw down there and he had a hard time getting people to talk to him. The 30 min. coverage on ABC before the show started was pathetic. Guess I'll have to just look at the dresses online.

DH and I have a bet on Naomi Watts' dress: he thinks the fashion "police" will hate it, I'm betting they'll love it.

I think people steered clear of Isaac Mizrahi out of fear he would grab a feel, a la Scarlet Johansen at the Globes!

I htink Reese looked lovely, and I didn't hate Michelle Williams' dress, it was daring and different. Also loved J Lo.

One that hasn't been mentioned - I thought Hillary Swank looked great. Agree that J Lo and Reese looked great; Charlize Theron's dress I thought was hideous.

There was a woman in a strapless orangish dress who was apparently the wife/date of someone in the Crash crowd - after it won best picture, did you see the shot of here pulling her dress up after she was jumping around? :p

Also, something you hardly ever see - the woman who was producer/co-writer for Brokeback Mountain was sipping a drink in one shot.

Hilary did look good. When she walked out to present, her waist looked SO tiny. The thing on Charlize's shoulder looked silly.

I didn't see Chad Lowe anywhere - did he come with Hilary or no?

CompassRose - Naomi definitely looked lumpy. :)

The orange dress lady actually started having problems when her husband (?) went up to accept the award for (sorry, can't remember) that came a few before the Best Picture. I thought she was going to fall out then.

Oh, and how about the woman who in her acceptance speech mentioned she wanted to thank (whoever it was) for seating her next to George Clooney at such and such award function? Then they panned to to George who looked like he had no idea whatsoever who the woman even was! My DH and I were cracking up!! :)

One that hasn't been mentioned - I thought Hillary Swank looked great.

I have ambivalent feelings about how Hillary Swank looked. I loved her hair, makeup, and the color of her dress. I think the top part of her dress hangs a tad too low. There is a lot of space between her collar bone and where her breasts begin. I think another dress other than an off the shoulder dress would suit her figure better. You can notice this in some pictures more than others. (I am being a little hyper-critical here)

Jennifer Aniston definitely looked gorgeous, I just wish she'd step out of that simple-black-dress comfort zone thing, you know?

Charlize looked great - it was just that shoulder thing. She's another one that definitely has red-carpet dressing down flat.

Some of them, I wonder... I mean, access to stylists, hair and make-up people, clothes and jewelry donated, how hard can it be to look decent? I get money doesn't equal taste, but surely those they hire have it and try to advise, no?

It looks bigger than her head! And even on Charlize, I am not wild about the ribbon wrapping round the hips. It looks.... o-kaaaay from the front, not so great from the side, or in that shot I saw where she was walking.

I can't believe no one mentions the dress-walking-by-itself phenomenon a la Nicole Kidman. I never fail to be disappointed in her gowns. She always picks some pale color that doesn't flatter her.

I thought J Lo looked gorgeous...and she wastes herself on Marc Anthony???? :D Oh and could Frances McDormand maybe make an effort?! :D

Pretty scarey but I actually knew that. I used to work in a vintage clothing shop and knew who she was from working there. She was actually a well-known designer...she really took off in the 70's when she designed clothing for Freddie Murcury. I dont know that much about her now...was that a photo from this years Oscars? The dresses were so blah this year...almost all the "big" stars wore black, white/grey, or beige. I don't know if it is the designers, the stylists, or the stars themselves, but the total effect is pretty boring. Among the colorless dresses, I thought Jennifer Alba's and Reese Witherspoon's were the most glamorous, and Naomi Watts' and Diane Kruger's among the ugliest. And Nicole Kidman's was probably the most boring! I thought several stars looked like they were wearing either cheapish wedding dresses or bad prom dresses!

Does anyone know if any websites have clips of winners' speeches, the cowboy montage, or other video from the night? It was on in the middle of the night here on a cable channel we don't have.

You know... she looks old enough, and interesting enough, and personality-crammed enough, that she COULD in fact work the.... um.... components of her look. It's everything TOGETHER that's horrifying. The hot-pink hair? Sure thing. Paired with a more tasteful dress, and minus the eye makeup -- effect, a kind of "F-YOU I'm-too-old."

The dress itself? Well, it is a little bit reminiscent of the kinds of things mocked on "artistic" women in twenties novels, a bit Lady of Shalott -- but without the hair, and perhaps just with the chains and not the other trash she's got dangling round her wattles.

The bangle, the junk gypsy beads, that one monstrous necklace, the earrings, and the eyeliner, on the other hand, suggest that Ms Rhodes does not own a mirror. You know the "rule of taste in accessories"? "Put them all on, then take one off"? Hers should be more like, "put them all on, take them all off, then PICK one."

Eek! I hadn't seen the bottom of Helena's dress! I admit, I wasn't crazy about her hair, but I was pretty glad to see her no longer looking like a lost cousin of the Addams Family, which is how she's pretty much seemed for the last few years, all black clothes and ratty hair. And I thought the colour and the upper shape of the dress were gorgeous.

The skirt, on the other hand, appears to have had one of those unfortunate bathroom underwear tuck accidents. And that purse is a poor choice. It doesn't even match Burton's shirt.
