Getting little smilies into the text of a post?

I have been posting here for years and have yet to figure out how to get the little smiley icons into the text. Anyone care to give me a beginner's lesson?

When you post, the smilies are to the right of the message box. You just click on the face you want and they appear in your text. They do not show up as smilies, but as puncutation and/or words instead.

It would not let me click on them all and post, but here are a few :p :) that are available.

The little smilies are at the bottom of the message box but when I click on one it just gets put in the title spot, not where the cursor is. There aren't any on the right when I post.

Who knew this could be so hard?!

Scroll down to you miscellaneous options...see if "disable smiles in text" is checked. If it is, I'm guessing that's why you can't see them on the right. Uncheck it and see what happens...

Make sure smilies are turned on so you can see the list of smilies to the right of the message box you type in. All the way at the bottom left of the screen will be a box that says "Posting Rules". There should be a list of things you can do. If you don't see the list, click on the little blue arrow next to the words "Posting Rules" and the list should appear.

Also here is a link to the keyboard shortcuts if you want to manually type in the keystrokes yourself.

Just print that page and you will have those keystrokes handy. Then you can insert :D them :) anywhere :eek: you ;) like :cool:.

The disable smilies is not checked under misc. options. Under posting rules it says smilies are on, and it says I may post new threads, I may post replies, I may post attachments, I may edit, but nothing about I may post smilies!

This is just the kind of thing that makes me crazy!!

Could it have something to do with your anti-virus program. Just a thought since sometimes they eliminate graphics from pages.

You are making me show my computer ignorance here!! I know we have anti-virus program, but don't know if it would interfere with the smilies. I will have to put the DH on the case! Thanks for the suggestion.

See what happens when you enter the characters for the smilies. Try hyphen+right parenthesis : ) (but put the characters together).

; ) (semi-colon/parenthesis - no space between the characters) - winking smiley ;)
: D (colon/capital D - no space between characters) - big grinning smiley :D
: ( (colon/left parenthesis - no space between characters) - frowning face :(

That link a few posts up sounds like it will list the others that can be used. I rarely click the little smiley pictures on the right of the "reply to thread" box. I just type the characters.
