What do you actually call the item that you can fit onto your bathtub faucet and has a long hose with a shower head at the other end? I want to buy one, but every name I've tried when looking online has been incorrect. I know they're out there somewhere!

Are you referring to the Shower Massage by Waterpik?
The only thing I'm not sure of is if when you say faucet do you mean the actual faucet you would use to fill the tub for a bath? Or do you mean the piece of pipe that usually sticks out high above the tub that the regular shower head attaches to?

Most of them are marketed for washing your pets. Here are a few:

It fits on the tub-filling spout in the bathtub...the last link Grace provided (thank you :o ) is what I need. However, I'd love it if I could get the Shower Massage with a tub adapter.

The last one is actually a sink sprayer - the end that attaches to the faucet on the last one (from Ace Hardware) won't fit over a tub faucet. The other three are built to go over a tub faucet.
The last one is the kind I have that fits over my utility sink faucet (or kitchen faucet), and I use it to wash my dogs in the utility sink. Again, it won't fit over the big, giant tub faucet.
The 2nd link offers a choice between sink and tub versions.

It's called a hand-held shower. I think we got ours at Ace hardware but now I don't see a similar one on their web site.

That's not actually it. She wants one that instead of mounting to the shower spout, it slips on (with a rubber piece) over the actual faucet. You slip it back off when you're done and put it away.
The kind you have is a "permanent" mount sort of thing. You don't take it on and off.

You can buy a handheld shower that diverts water from either the bathtub spout or from the shower head depending upon your preference.
