Hi all, where is everyone?
Well, I started my new job this week and love it! I am so excited about what is to come and they are giving me lots of responsibility and decision making power. I even have an office with a window and a view!
This weekend our very own Catharine is coming to visit! We'll ski tomorrow (I coach and she'll take a lesson) and then we'll either ski or play on Sunday and I can't wait to show off this beautiful state to her. Unfortunately, we are getting snow, lots of it (we need it but its hard to see the mountains like this). Keep your fingers crossed that the roads aren't terrible tonight as we drive up to Vail!
So how is everyone else? SueK, how was New Mexico?

Hi Robyn,
I'm glad to hear that you like the new job. A window with a view is great! Have fun with Catherine, but you can keep the snow!
I just finished my grocery shopping and putting everything away. I had a really short list today. I kept wondering what I was forgetting, but still can't think of anything. It's beautiful and sunny here today. We had some thunderstorms last night, but everything should dry out. High are supposed to be in the low 70's. Ginger has a softball tournament this weekend, and team pictures tomorrow. Not much else is planned. We may try to fix the toilet on Sunday and start painting the trim in the kitchen. I also need to finish installing the under the cabinet lighting.
I've also got to meet my brother somtime today. Al left is razor at my dad's house and since my brother works here in Marietta they took it home. Of course, they have had the razor for a week becuase we can't get our schedules to mesh. *sigh*

Hi Robyn and Leigh! I'm at home today with a "sick" kid. He did throw up last night but is doing fine today - I'm sure he could have gone to school - oh well - it's 3rd grade - he'll be able to make it up without problems.
Robyn - have fun with Catherine!!! This weather we're all having is so strange!!! It's supposed to be 68 degrees today but REALLY windy!!! I agree with Leigh - you can keep the snow. We're so done with that!
Leigh - our baseball season starts next month - hard to believe we're already into that!!! I missed a couple of klatches - you guys finished the tile in the kitchen I assume?

Hi Robyn and Leigh and everyone else!
I just posted a short account of our vacation at Atlantis and Universal so check it out!
Pictures to come sometime... :D
We were supposed to see Donald Fagen from Steely Dan in concert last night but it was postponed until tomorrow night. We didn't find out until we got to the theater. Ticketmaster sent me an email but who checks their email at 5 pm when you're rushing from work to the show?
Tonight is Erin's Freshman Semi-Formal. She is wearing the emerald green dress I posted pictures of a few weeks ago when we bought it. So I'm leaving work a bit early to get home in time to do her nails (no time for a real manicure) and get her to her hair appointment. She's just going with her friends. It's in the cafeteria at school.
Tomorrow Andy is going to look at a used Corvette and wants me to come with him. I guess it's a mid-life crisis thing although he's always loved them and cars in general. This one has been garaged winters and only has 35K miles on it and is about $5,000 less than others he's researched at that age and mileage. But it's really far away, almost to Rhode Island (we're at the other end of MA, almost to New Hampshire) so it'll be a long trip.
That, in conjunction with the Donald Fagen concert, means I'm not going to get anything done on Saturday! I feel like I'm having a Leigh weekend!! :D
We still have mountains of laundry and tonight Andy's having the guys over to play cards. So I won't be able to do laundry since the guys will be in the basement.
Robyn - please keep your snow! We are finally hitting 60 degrees today and together with just getting back from the Bahamas, I'm ready for spring!
Leigh - keep telling yourself that the kitchen will be done soon! :D

Kathy,
Yes, we finished the tile, and painted. The toilet leaks out the bottom so we're looking to find a handyman to fix it for us. Al has a connection at work we're waiting on. We also have to paint the trim. I got the lights under the cabinets installed, but I broke a bulb and the on/off switch is stuck at on. *sigh*
Kathy,
Well, I hope everyone is feeling better soon. Ginger's gotten sick a few times in the middle of the night. No fever, feels fine in the am....I talked to the Dr and it sounds like it's related to diet. It happens infrequently, and usually when we've eaten acidic foods late.
Loren,
I'll check out your trip thread. That's a bummer about the concert. I agree, who checks their email at 5pm when it's time to leave. I'm sure Erin will look fabulous for her semi-formal. I hope she has fun.

hee hee - hey Leigh - Charisse here! :D I KNOW it's been awhile.......
Regarding the sickness, Jack even said to me this morning - hey mom, maybe it was the taco's and then the donuts for snack that did it to me... He really is doing fine today.
Loren - Your trip sounded great!! As I said in the post, Jack wants to LIVE at the Nick hotel - yup, me and Sponge Bob ;)

Well, I got new bulbs, and the under cabinet lights work. I just have to unplug them when I'm using them.

Charisse - have fun with Spongebob!! :D Look at the bright side, at least you're past the Barney stage! :D
Leigh - can you fix the switch or get a new switch for the lights or is it all on one wire? I think I'd exchange them if I had to unplug them every time.

Good morning! It's not often that I get to join in. I had to do a double take and think to myself that it is actually Friday!
Robyn, the new job sounds great! An office w/ a window--and I bet the view is pretty darn great too! Is the job in Boulder? Have fun skiing this weekend.
Hi Leigh! This is the weekend my friend (camncurtsmom) is supposed to be moving to Atlanta. Not sure if you ever corresponded w/ her or not. I haven't talked to her in a while, as we've both been so busy. I think they ended up w/ a house closer to Marietta. Good luck getting the house things done. I bet your kitchen looks fantastic!
Clarisse, the comments from your son made me laugh! Tacos and donuts. Heehee.
Loren, you'll have to post pics of your daughter all dressed up! I missed the thread w/ her dress (my board time is limited these days). Have fun at the concert!
Well, this is the last day of my Spring Break and I am up at school getting some loose ends tied up. I spent most of the week in Oklahoma. And....I got a job! I never expected to have one this soon, but it's all really falling into place. I'll be teaching at an elementary school in Norman, OK (Home of the Oklahoma Sooners). I'll be making a big change from my middle school severe/profound kids. In just five months, I'll be teaching developmentally delayed pre-k! Fun! I've already met some of the kids and they are all so cute! It will be different, but I'm looking forward to the change and the move. Now I just need good home selling vibes!
The rest of my weekend will be spent getting house stuff done and then tomorrow night I am going to the Big 12 Women's Tournament Finals. Not sure who I am going with yet. OU is playing so I am excited!
That's about it for my weekend...Oh, my parents are coming down Sunday to help me with house stuff. My nephew is on spring break next week, so they will be doing house things while I am at work every day. :) My dad is walking OK, but can't do too much w/o his foot hurting him. Mostly the things I have are small jobs.
I don't join in often either, but have been away so much I feel the need to stop and say hello to everyone. I was actually thinking yesterday was Friday for much of the day.
I guess my lack of patience yesterday says something about how busy I've been. Really don't have this time either, but tough.
I started to type something about what I've been up to, but you don't really want to hear all that. Spring break starts this afternoon, and we're going to work on playing catch up at home and maybe build the puppy a dog house. DH is taking next week off, so I'm hoping we can go look at kitchen cabinets and see if we can't get closer to placing an order. DS1 has missed 2+ weeks of school with mono, so he'll be getting caught up as well.
Robyn, I'm glad you are loving your new job, the window and the view! Have fun skiing.
Everyone else, enjoy your weekends too. Gotta keep it short and run --- do good.

Robyn - glad to hear that the new job is going well!
I decided a couple of weeks ago (on a dare from a friend) to post a listing on Craigslist for a guy since I haven't had any nibbles from my JDate posting. Met one guy last week for a walk, nice guy but no sexual spark (and I WANT sex in my life :o ). Have a tentative coffee date on Monday with another guy I spoke to last night on the phone, a lunch date with a third guy (geographically undesirable and newly separated, I have serious qualms about him) and a few others in the pipe line....Kind of fun, kind of scary
Would you go out with somebody of a different race? I was surprised by how many responses I'm getting from non-white guys (latin, indian, african-american) when I said brownie points for being Jewish. I can't come up with a good reason (other then 'society') to not date them, but I also am not 100% sure I'd be comfortable doing it
Alex stayed home today with a cough and cold. Kid just doesn't do sick well
Sunday, I'm meeting Sarah and MommyCook (Cindy) for dim sum in the city since Sarah is here on vacation. I always like meeting BB'ers IRL (I already know Cindy since she is in Supper Club with me)

wow Tyra - you are good! My mother instincts kick in and say please be careful (although I know we're around the same age!!! ) but I admire you for going for it! And yes, sex in our lives is a good thing! ;) Have you heard anything about the permanance of your job?
Leigh - no problem!! I figured as much! :)
Jennifer - wow, middle school to prek! Big change! I'm a sub teacher's aide and work k-5, regular classroom and special ed... and it's always a check for me to go from counting by 5's to using a protracter!!! :p Congrats!!!
Beth - enjoy your weekend - it was good to see you.
Loren - ugh Barney! I worked kindergarten registration yesterday and there were many kids who just cried the whole time. I kept telling myself thank goodness we're beyond this stage!!!! ;)
Robyn - I forgot to say congrats on your new job - an office with a window!!! You go girl! :p

Jennifer - I forgot to say congratulations on the new job and the up-coming move. I know you want to go back home and I'm glad it's all falling into place for you.
Charisse - haven't heard anything on the job front. Between the non-communication of my company and the indecision of the client, no-one wants to admit to anything. Of course, developers are looking for new jobs and quitting here in the meantime (we lost 3 developers in the last 30 days)...I figure I'll still be here if for no other reason then attrition :) I just can't bring myself to leave a great commute and flexibilty until I absolutely have to, so here I sit.

Tyra, your date stories made me laugh. :) In anticipation of the move, I have signed back up on match.com. I had a couple of dates while I was in OK, but neither of them made me go 'wow'. I couldn't imagine sex with either of them, so there definitely weren't sparks. :D
One was a nice guy though (well, they both were, but one I actually clicked with). We had a math class together as undergrads and actually remember each other, but don't ever remember talking. He's recently divorced too, so that makes me wary. He still might be someone to hang out with though.
Any of you who are not married, do you date guys who are smaller than you? Shorter, littler, etc? I am tall (5'9) and big boned. I can't imagine dating someone who is much smaller than I. It makes me feel weird. The one guy weighs probably 40 lbs. less than I do, though he's the same height.
tbb113
03-10-2006, 10:56 AM
Jennifer - can't help you on that one. I'm only 5'3" so the odds of finding a guy shorter then me is pretty slim :D I will say I prefer to date a guy with some 'bulk' to him...not fat, but broad. I like to feel small and protected and a thin guy just doesn't do it for me (but the guy I'm seeing Monday night is tall and slim  ). I'm about 20 pounds heavier then I would like to be and I would prefer my date to weigh more than me as well :D

Robyn, congrats on the job and have fun with Catharine visiting. The kids and I hope to go skiing in two weeks. Hopefully, the good snow will hold out. DD went last week and said it was pretty icy.
I have been busy studying for the bar exam, so I haven't been posting as much. Then it was championship seaso for DS swimming so that took up my next two "free weekends," and this weekend I have another exam. Hopefully, I will pass everything and not have to worry about this stuff again.
Jennifer, I am glad you are happy with the change. House-selling prayers are on the way.
Beth have fun cabinet shopping.
Leigh, I am always impressed with how much home rennovation you do on your own. I don't have the patience. Although right now I don't really have the money either
Loren, your trip sounded wonderful. Donald Fagen is coming to concert here too, and while I love Steely Dan, I was thinking I wouldn't enjoy this as much because it was just going to be him. Let us know how it is.
Charisse,
I hope you don't catch whatever made your DS sick. Did you have tacos and donuts too? :D
Tyra - have fun dating. Race was never an issue for me, but having a similar background was. I dated a black guy from a very, very wealthy family when I was in college, and we just had such different perspectives on things. He grew up going to prep schools having a maid, gardener, and that just wasn't me. At this stage in my life, I would have to date someone who shared my faith. I don't want to have to explain that aspect of my life; I just want the person to get it. Have fun through the sorting process though.
Gracie
03-10-2006, 11:17 AM
Jennifer - good to "see" you! Congratulations on the new job. I'm sure all the house things will fall into place.
Tyra - I would definitely date someone of a different race if we had the same type of background and socio-economic status (and if I was attracted to them!! :D ). But those are the same qualifications I'd have for a white guy also. Have fun with that! I agree that I'd stay at your job until you get some kind of notice. Even if it comes to them having to let you go before you found something, wouldn't you be able to collect unemployment until you found something?
Laura - we've seen Donald Fagen on his own before and it was just like going to a Steely Dan concert. Walter Becker never contributed anything that couldn't be replicated by someone else. :) I'm really looking forward to it, it's just that last night would have been better.
I just came back from lunch and you all are going to laugh but I just went to the world's best car wash! They have 2 lines - one for exterior wash only and one for inside and outside wash. Even for just the exterior wash (which costs $10 - the same as going to any drive-through auto wash) they take your keys, let it go through the wash and then they have an army of guys that dry the whole car. You go inside and pay while they do your car and then wait at the end. If you get the interior done too, they take your keys and the same army vacuums the inside and washes the inside of all the windows, windshield and back window and you get the same hand-dry treatment. The interior/exterior is only $18. I'm never vacuuming my car again! There were a ton of expensive cars there when I first got there so I thought something had to be up for so many people to be there. It's the little things that make my day! :D

Um....DH works in wholesale building materials.....employee discounts are nice. :D :D :D
I'll get Al to work on the switch later. I only intend to use the lights while I'm cooking.
JJ,
Congrats on the new job and the move. I exchanged a few PM's with Tammi, and gave her some information on where to live/traffic. I'm glad to hear they found a house. I haven't heard from her for a while, but things have been hectic, and I haven't been on the BB much in the last month or so.
Tyra,
I can't help you on the dating front, but good luck! :D

Hello everyone!
Congratulations on the jobs, Robyn and Jennifer!
Tyra, I think I'd give the race thing a go and see if it does make you feel uncomfortable. I'd think that nowdays religion and soci-economics would be more of a hurdle.
My cruise was wonderful, but I caught a cold 3 minutes after stepping on dry land. I'll post some pictures when I feel a little better. I'm desperately trying to keep my schedule completely free this weekend to catch up on sleep and laundry and grocery shopping.

Loren - aren't all of your car washes (except at gas stations) like that? They are here and if it would ever stop forecasting rain on the weekends, I would get my car washed. The interior is nasty.
I think you and Laura hit the nail on the head about my ambivelance about dating somebody that isn't white. I would really like to date somebody that is either Jewish or completely non-religious/non-practicing (which I said in the posting). I just don't want to deal with 'your holidays/my holidays' things any longer (my ex was raised Catholic but didn't practice and agreed to raise the boys Jewish). I want some commonality in backgrounds, etc. I think adding race to the mix is just one more thing to 'deal with'. But one of the guys sure is mighty fine looking :) He is the one that I'm agonizing over...
Here is the email trail so far (with identifying things removed)
Hi Tyra,
It is good to meet another Chicagoian. I have been here since I joined the Navy in 1983. I manage a Technical Service department for a medical device company in xx. I read your entire message and I must be quite honest in saying that if you are not sure about the potential of dating me because of the color of my skin, then you should reconsider and maybe alter your ad. I want a woman who is sure she wants to explore the possibilities with me. I would not care for either of us to develop an attachment and then discover race is an issue. If you should decide for sure you want to get to know me, please contact me. If not, I wish you well in your search. I only concern myself with the content of a person's character and not the color of their skin. When the lights go off, we are all the same.
Kind Regards,
abc

Hi ABC
Coincidentally, I was also born in Chicago, but I was raised there and the surrounding suburbs. I moved to CA after college and have lived here ever since. I currently live in Danville. I work as a programmer/analyst for an IT consulting company.
You sound great and your pictures are wonderful. I'll be honest though, in the past I've only dated other white men and I'm not 100% sure that I want to get emotionally involved with someone who isn't (but I can't put my finger on why). I have always had friends of different races and I honestly believe that I see people as people first and their race is just information like blond hair or brown eyes.
I've attached two pictures that were taken in September. I think I look better in person!

As to your email from abc, he certainly writes well and sounds educated. I think you can tell a lot from people's writing (typos, incorrect grammar - there vs their, etc). I'm not sure you could rule him in or out until you've met and had chance to talk and learn about each other.

I agree he sounds great and did I mention from his pictures very good looking as well. I should probably take the chance...who knows we might not click in person ;) I'm going to keep thinking about it over the weekend...
I feel sort of like when I was debating whether or not to find out Alex's gender when I went for the ultrasound. I debated back and forth all week, told the nurse NO and then when the doctor came in, said YES I want to know.
If I'm thinking about him this much...I must want to meet him, right?
