Okay, I've started a thread asking about this--I've cruised other threads talking about beds--but wanted to come back and update on MY experience and what we ended up with.

Brief recap: Needed a new king size bed--tired of sleeping like crap and wanted to make sure this would be the last bed we bought for a while. Have looked at both tempurpedic and sleep number.

We ended up buying a tempurpedic knock-off about two weeks ago. It's made of the same density foam, etc., etc. but has a much better warranty. Warranty was VERY important to us because our last warranty was a joke.

I was nervous about the foam because of the heat issue. I already am extremely hot at night so this was a major concern for me. After two weeks on the bed--the verdict is in! We LOVE it! It doesn't seem any warmer and we both find that we sleep deeper, feel much more rested in the morning and now realize that we must have tossed and turned all night disturbing each other before--because neither of us even notices when the other gets out of bed. Ours is a plush version with an extra foam topper, that makes it not as firm as a regular tempurpedic. While it was still a ridiculously expensive bed (in my opinion) it was quite a bit cheaper than the tempurpedic brand. One bonus and it's too early to tell if it's permanently solved---but my "restless leg syndrome" symptoms have disappeared. The only time I've ever had them gone this long was when I was going to the chiropractor three times a week---so I am very hopeful that this bed has solved that problem.

Anyway, it's purely anecdotal, but just thought I'd share.

We purchased a king size mattress last week and we chose a Simmons. (http://www.simmons.com/products/brands/beautyrest/index.cfm) Both memory foam mattresses and individually pocket coil mattresses have a great motion transfer index which is important to us. Almost every major mattress manufacturer makes a memory foam mattress or makes a coil spring mattress with pillow top that is made of memory foam. Both Sam's Club (http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=149372) and Costco (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11025926&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=) sell memory foam mattresses.

The last time we purchased a mattress I didn't go with my wife to make the purchase. She purchased one that was very comfortable but had a "trampoline" effect whenever one of us would roll over or get out of the bed to go to the bathroom. Whenever one of us would move it would wake the other one up. This time we both went to make the purchase and we both flounced and jumped into the bed while the other one was in the sleep position. The mattress we purchased hardly moved during this test.

I recommend to anyone that buys a mattress buy one that has a favorable motion transfer index.

I am very interested in this thread as we are going to be mattress shopping sometime this spring/summer after DH and I get the antique oak bedroom suit that we purchased the other day, finished. So I hope that lots will weigh in. I keep wanting to think it is all a ruse...that these beds couldn't be that comfortable. It is good to hear otherwise.

Where do you get a temperapedic knock off? My parents have an actual temp. and love it. I'd like one, but the price tag scares me away. What should I look for?

Sealy makes a Tempur-Pedic knock-off called TrueForm. (http://www.sealy.com/TrueForm/TrueForm.aspx) Other mattress manufacturers make Tempur-Pedic knock-offs as well.

You can also have a "poor man's" Tempur-Pedic bed by purchasing a memory foam mattress pad. These are sold in varying thicknesses for less than $200.00.

Has anyone had one for, say, 5 years? How do they hold up over time? My tempurpedic pillow seems to be a bit flatter after a year of use, but maybe it's my imagination.

We've had our king-sized Tempurpedic mattress for about 4.5 years and love it as much today as the first day we got it. I haven't noticed any considerable changes in it. We were just away for a few days on vacation and I am so excited about sleeping on it again. :D

This is a very timely thread for us. Four years ago we bought a mattress to replace our 20-year-old one (I was padding the springs that were sticking up thru the cover with towels, but kept putting off "the search"). I didn't know what I was looking for and bought one that was around $350, which I thought was expensive but obviously I should have spent more. It is crap. DH and I both sleep in the center, and even though I rotate it often, there is a depression in the middle (back out came the old towels, this time folded and placed in the sagging area).

I'll be looking at this thread a lot for your responses. I'm tired of rolling toward the center. I'd really like a queen size (esp since DH is 6'4") since our cat now sleeps with us, but our antique bed is a double, and replacing it is not an option. So I want a really, really good (and long-lasting) mattress this time!

Ours was a version sold by Bob's Discount Furniture which is a chain in New England. For any other New Englanders---Jordan's Furniture is now carrying a version of the tempurpedic made by an Irish company.

We got rid of our overpriced Stearns & Foster King pillow top for sagging and had it replaced under warranty. we chose a natural knockoff from the Mattress Firm. Can't think of the name of it. I was told that the Temp. was synthetic and tended to be hot and we went w/a more natural bed w/similar feel.

So far so good. My dad has the true Temp. and loves it. I will never own another pillowtop. They do sag over time.

Beth, if you're reading this, ditch that 400-lb mattress we both used to have and go for a Temp. or other like thing!!!!

Yes, I read it. We are ready to replace the monster (when movers complain, you know it's too heavy!). I think we're reaching the point where we have had it long enough to think about replacing. I'm so tired of flipping and turning that monster.

My ears pirked up on the "replaced under warranty." Maybe we should stop flipping and start looking into the warranty before it runs out. Did they prorate? If so, it's probably not worth it at this point.

Warranty is good for quite a while, Beth. We had to fill out a form and show them pics of how deep the indentations were. Have to be 1.5 inches. They did prorate. We got about $3300 trade-in which was enough to buy the "natural" version of Tempurpedic.

The first night on our new mattress, my back didn't hurt at all and neither did my hubby's...

We'll have to check it out. We've been thinking about the matress -- in between the kitchen stuff and everything else. Thanks.
