Unexpected pleasure to go for the weekend to Omaha. Never been, any food ideas, places to eat, great things to see with young teens? Thanks.

go to the old market area for dining, small shops, etc. Nice area to just walk around and enjoy! http://www.omahaoldmarket.com/
Omaha is a very nice clean town. I do not live there but have visited and would like to back for a weekend soon.

Emptyspool, I was just talking with DH about Omaha. I noticed you are from N.O. (we just returned from N.O., had a great time!) anyway, my DH reminded me, Omaha is to steaks like N.O. is to seafood. On our next trip to Omaha we want to try a steakhouse called Johnnys...not sure how many teens you have but I do not think it is expensive for a steak house. We have read many good things about Johnnys. Please recall this thread when you return from Omaha and tell me about your trip!

I'm from Omaha. Deb had a great suggestion! You simply must visit the Old Market. I'd also suggest one of my favorite Italian restaurants that is located there: Vivace. They serve a variety of flavored (made from scratch) with any sauce you care to pair with it. It's great food and a neat atmosphere.

Other suggestions: Omaha has one of the best zoos in the contry: Henry Doorley Zoo.. (description from Omaha web site):

Neighboring Rosenblatt Stadium, Henry Doorly Zoo is one of the state's most popular tourist attractions. This world-class zoo sits on 130 acres and is home to over 600 species and more than 18,600 specimens.

The zoo has a 1.5-acre indoor tropical rainforest. The Lied Jungle is the world's largest indoor rainforest features the jungle habitats of Asia, Africa, South America and Australia.

The Scott Kingdoms of the Seas Aquarium, which opened in 1995, is located in the Henry Doorly Zoo and is the largest salt-water aquarium between Chicago and San Francisco.

The aquarium includes Antarctic penguins, and the nation's second largest tropical reef tank housing sharks, giant ray fish and other reef fish. Visitors can view the reef exhibit while walking through a clear, acrylic underwater tunnel, the largest and longest in the nation.

Additionally, you may want to visit the Strategic Air Command (SAC) museum, or Boys Town . Attached is a link to an interactive map that may give you some more ideas (just click on different areas of the map, and you'll get linked to the attractions in that area).

Luck you!! I live in Omaha and this is the first year that I will probably not get to attend the College World Series!!

You will have a great time here. As everyone else suggests you must visit and eat in the Old Market area and afterwards if you like homemade icecream visit Ted & Wally's in the Old Market as well!

Enjoy the games and crowd watching, but go early - huge crowds are expected on opening day with President Bush throwing out the opening pitch. Plus with Nebraska participating in the series attendace is expected to be at record heights!!

Omaha update: We had a great time!! Such an all American experience. The games are great and the city is wonderful...clean, friendly NO TRAFFIC!! We didn't make it to the zoo but did go to Boy's Town. Quite a image for our 13 year old boys to see. We ate at Jericho's - known for prime rib and steak. Had the essence of the old traditional steak restaurants, solid food and wonderfully friendly waitress, although they missed the LSU fans. The Old Market area is wonderful and full of restaurants. Ate at the spaghetti factory...mediocre but fun for kids and low cost. My favorite was the wine shop la Buvette in the Old Market. Not just a fabulous wine store but small restaurant with pate's, cheese, salads, so european. Would go again to experience the baseball...good family fun. Ballpark food mediocre with the exception of Laura's eggrolls in the stadium (4 for $3 - and lovely to meet Laura the lovely Philopino lady who makes them) and outside the stadium in the 'food court' area was a stand with chicken teka sandwiches and mango yogurt smoothies - both get a high 10 from me.

Tulane played Nebraska and although we were greatly outnumbered the Nebraskans were so wonderful...they knew that both teams were at the World Series for the first time and there was mutual respect and good wishes for all. Stanford beat us Nancy, unbelievable game....we may get a second chance!!!

GO TULANE

Thanks for letting us know how your trip to Omaha went. I'm glad you enjoyed Boys Town & the Old Market!

I'm still sad, of course, that Nebraska lost. Sniff, Sniff http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif Ah well... next year.

By the way... I noticed Kevin Costner in the stands during Nebraska's first game Friday night. Kind of strange seeing a celebrity like that in my little ol' home town. You didn't run into him, did you??

No, we didn't see Kevin Costner...but heard he was there. We did see President Bush throw out the first ball and that was quite an experience too for our young sons. It is truly an accomplishment for a team to get there. We had many freshmen as starters but will lose many seniors. Hopefully we will get to return. Again, a wonderful experience for any baseball fans. Thanks to all who were so friendly and made us feel welcome.
