I hope this isn't a repeat post - I ran a search and came up with a number of threads but couldn't access any of them - I got a message that said the page could not be displayed because it had an error (all 10-15 threads had the same message?)
Anyway, I am intrigued by the possibility that if I put some grains etc in a crockpot at night I can wake up to a healthy "instant" breakfast. Does anyone have some tried & true recipes/tips for doing this? I am about to do an Internet search but thought I'd refer to the all-seeing, all-knowing BB first!
TIA

This is not the healthiest grain breakfast, but it was really good. I got it off a link someone had posted on crockpot cooking. We had it on vacation and our friends really enjoyed it.

SLOWCOOKER BREAKFAST COBBLER

4 apples, peeled and sliced (I didn't peel them)
1/4 c. honey
1 t. cinnnamon
2 T. butter
2 c. granola cereal

Cover and cook on low for 7 - 9 hours. It says you can cook this on high, but we tried it and it burned. Serve with milk.

Let me know if you try it!

I just came across this recipe and remembered this thread!!

Maple-Hazelnut Oatmeal
From Weight Watchers In Good Time

1 1/2 cups fat-free milk
1 1/2 cups water
2 Gala apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2" cubes (~3 cups)
1 cup uncooked steel-cut oats (such as McCann's Irish Oatmeal)
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 1/2 tbsp butter or stick margarine, softened
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
cooking spray
1/4 cup real maple syrup
2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts

Bring milk and water to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring frequently.

Place hot milk mixture, apple, and next 5 ingredients in a 3.5 quart electric slow cooker coated with cooking spray; stir well. Cover with lid; cook on low-heat setting 7 hours or until oats are tender.

Spoon oatmeal into bowls; top with maple syrup and hazelnuts.

Yield: 4 servings (1 1/4 cups oatmeal, 1 tbsp syrup, and 1 1/2 tsp hazelnuts).

Let me know if you try it!

Jen, the recipe sounds great! I love oatmeal and could eat it for breakfast everyday :D (but never have time in the am to make it).

Question.... what are uncooked steel-cut oats?? I have "old fashion rolled oats" Will that work?

TIA
Anne

Here's what Cook's Thesaurus has to say about steel cut oats:

steel-cut oats = Irish oats = Scotch oats = pinhead oats = coarse-cut oats = steel-cut oatmeal = Irish oatmeal = Scotch oatmeal = pinhead oatmeal = coarse-cut oatmeal = porridge oats = porridge oatmeal

Notes: These are groats that have been chopped into small pieces. They're chewier than rolled oats, and grain aficionados often prefer them for hot oatmeal cereals and muesli. Substitutes: rolled oats (less chewy, takes less time to cook) OR whole oat groats (takes much longer to cook)

Thanks Shirley :D

I forgot about Cook's Thesaurus. I now have it bookmarked

Here is a recipe I found at alastra.com. It says that any combination of grains will work, just keep it 1 cup grains
to 3 cups water.

Six Grain Crockpot Breakfast

2 1/2 Tbsp Bulgur, uncooked (1 ounce)
2 1/2 Tbsp brown rice, uncooked (1 ounce)
2 Tbsp barley, uncooked (3/4 ounce)
2 Tbsp millet, uncooked (3/4 ounce)
2 Tbsp cornmeal, uncooked (3/4 ounce)
1/4 cup rolled oats (3/4 ounce)
3/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp chopped dried mixed fruit (4 1/2 ounces)
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 cups water
1 Tbsp vanilla

Combine grains, dried fruit and cinnamon in crock pot. Mix well.
Stir in water and vanilla. Cover and cook 6 to 8 hours on low
setting. Stir before serving and add more water if desired. Serve
hot, topped with brown sugar or drizzled with maple syrup.

Note: any selection of grains will work -- just keep it 1 cup grains
to 3 cups water.

I would not substitute regular rolled oats for steel-cut oats in a crockpot dish. I think they would get way too mushy. I made steel-cut oatmeal mixed with water and dried cranberries in the crockpot the other day and they turned out good but still a little overdone (I cooked them for 9 hours on low). Just my opinon; if you do try it let us know how it works.

Didn't Alton Brown do a crockpot oatmeal recipe on a recent episode of Good Eats? Check out the Food TV web site.
