This is a weird one. But then again...it's from me. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

Remember that wonderful pepper grinder you FORCED me to buy? Don't get me wrong-- it is indeed wonderful and I'm very happy with it. But, well... it came with pepper in it. Did yours? The first time I used it, I thought my green beans were bad. (Bad green beans? Seems like a contradiction in terms right there.) The second time I used it, I thought maybe my noodles were rancid. They smelled... how can I politely put this? My husband-- who is a member of the National Pony Express Association and KNOWS such things-- well, he said they smelled like a horse pen. We sniffed the noodles, then we sniffed the pepper grinder (I like pepper on my noodles) and by golly, there was definitely something equine about that pepper. (insert animated horse icon from Mamasue)

Anyway, I cleaned the grinder out and decided it was the peppercorns that were suspect. And I think I'm just gonna refill that puppy with a little something that comes a little closer to the smell of pepper, if ya know what I mean!

I gather you had no such experience??

Gail and Deanna, hope you won't mind my throwing my 2 cents worth in....my husband is the heaviest pepper user I've ever known, so I asked him about this. He said he had green peppercorns go bad once, and he thought that any of them could go bad if they got wet. It's possible in the packaging or shipping that some moisture could have gotten in there, especially if the package was subjected to temperature extremes (i.e., foggy glasses). Or maybe they weren't dried properly in the first place. Can't imagine composting, fermenting pepper. Hope you got it licked.

Gail...although I did not have this problem, it does sound like they were either stale or had a moisture problem! I would have taken it back and switched for another. But who knows, if they were all in the same shipment, they would probably all have the same problem.

I really like my peppercorns "fresh". That is the reason I don't see the purpose in those 4 foot "TOWER"-style peppermills that seem to be so popular...

And Mamasue...cute graphics! It really enhances the thread!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Actually, I posted this because it was so strange. The way I looked at it, I already had LOTS of peppercorns at home, so I really didn't care if the ones in the mill were there or not. (Actually, I was expecting to purchase an empty peppermill when I went to W-S) So it was no biggie to toss 'em and refill the peppermill with fresh "unhorsey" stuff.

Sue, thanks for not letting me down. Like the sun setting in the west, there are just some things in life you've got to believe in!
