View Full Version : substitute for swordfish
As someone who grew up not liking fish, I have recently discovered that I like tuna and swordfish steaks a lot. However, I just read that people should really stop eating swordfish for a while because they are being over-fished and it is straining the population. Any suggestions for substitutes? I don't really enjoy real "fishy" fish, and seem to prefer firm fish. Any recipes would also be greatly welcomed.

I too prefer firm fish without that fishy taste - one of the reasons I won't eat salmon - too fishy. I usually eat only tuna steaks! I would suggest perhaps Marlin, though it can be a bit fishy, so it's more of a gamble. One thing I tried recently and really enjoyed was Halibut. I recommend it and I have a great recipe for cooking it if you are interested.

I have often used thresher shark in place of swordfish. It is a firm fish with very little "fishy" taste to it.

Try sea bass. It's anice firm whitefish with a mild, buttery taste. It's good baked in a sauce. I often bake it in a ratatouille. I doubt it would work well for grilling, though. Anyway, happy fishing!
Not knowing what's readily available where you live, that's kind of a hard one...
I seem to recall monkfish (hard to find here) might fit the bill. What about mahi-mahi (that's pretty firm and generally mild). Shark can be really good (especially mako) or not so good (it's kind of hit and miss...) Can you get different varieties of tuna: ahi, yellowfin, or yellowtail (sometimes fishy)? I am a great salmon fan, though my husband finds it too fishy. A little lemon dill sauce on it does wonders! And since you're a tuna fan, I hope you checked out the thread on ways to prepare tuna. (I'm pushing the wasabi recipe.)
I've got to admit, though, that we all LOVE swordfish in this household. (grilled, slathered in garlic butter...mmm...) We may be the reason for the shortage!

We like both halibut and sea bass. The sea bass is especially nice and good with a lot of veggies.

What about orange roughy? I also grew up not eating seafood and orange roughy was one of the first fish I was able to enjoy. although I'm pretty sure you couldn't just substitute it in a swordfish recipe - I've never tried swordfish but I think they're different types of fish.
