I was taken to Millennium Restaurant(www.millenniumrestaurant.com) last night. It's a vegan restaurant near the civic center in San Francisco. My SO, who is an avid meat eater, almost fell out of his chair with the plantain torte appetizer. the meal just got better from there. our wine, bandol rose, was also amazing.
on the sunday closest to the full moon they also offer "aphrodisiac night" which includes a room in the adjoining abigail hotel in addition to the 4 course meal http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
i know many of us like to travel, so if you're ever in SF look this place up. anyone else have a restaraunt worth traveling for?
Don't get me started!
The Canoe House in the Mauna Lani Hotel (Big Island of Hawaii.) Right at the edge of the ocean, the most AMAZING seafood. Ono that could make you cry! And while you're there, try Roussel's for Hawaiian food, cajun style. The cook knows his spices and does incredible things to island seafood, duck or more traditional New Orleans goodies.
I also happen to be partial to a little hole-in-the-wall north of San Francisco, in Bodega Bay: The Sandpiper. You'll never find it if you don't know where to go and the locals like to keep it that way. The place has zero atmosphere, but whoever is in the kitchen knows his stuff: from some of the best homestyle breakfasts, to marvelous creamy clam chowder, to perfectly turned out fresh-off-the boat seafood for dinner.
Lake Tahoe (South Shore) Another place you'll never find, on the Nevada side, about a mile past state line at the end of the casinos. The Waterwheel. Tahoe doesn't offer great food, but this Chinese restaurant is a cut above the norm. My favorite thing they do is their vegetables (with garlic, natch) They just recently put in a sushi bar (in a Chinese restaurant?) which served a yellowtail sushi which literally melted in my mouth.
Please stop me! I'll go on and on and on!

Aaaah...college memories. In the small town of Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia, lies a tiny, bohemian restaurant with mostly vegetarian fare called Bluebird Cafe. At least once a week, my friends and I would visit for 'bulldog tofu' and iced coffee. Bulldog tofu, in case you are wondering consists of sauted tofu with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, melted cheese on the top and a sprinkling of nutritional yeast. It came with fluffy, delicious whole wheat biscuits.
Every once in a while, I will drive up to Athens to enjoy this treat. Last time I went, I asked for the recipe. Apparently, it is a secret, but the waitress did inform me that it was FRIED not once, but twice!!!!!

I wish I could remember the name of the wonderful seafood "shack" I came upon in St. Augustine, FL when I was visiting there. It is apparently a local secret, and I don't blame them for keeping it that way. They have the best hush puppies and to-die-for scallops!
It's a tiny little place, and the lines get so long that everyone waits in the parking lot for their "turn". They literally shout names over a loudspeaker outside so that you know when you'll be seated http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I won't be living here much longer but there are some wonderful restaurants here in Jackson Hole. The Granary is the one the one that offers the most spectacular view of the Grand Tetons with very good food, but a somewhat limited menu. Restaurant Terroir in town has great French/asian cuisine and a spectacular wine list, and the Range is also very good.
I'm going to be traveling to Savannah, GA, Hilton Head, SC, and Charleston, SC in a couple of weeks. Anyone know of any "to die for" restaurants in those places. Although I'm sure it won't be hard to find great places there!

I haven't been to Maine in more years than I care to admit. There was a place in Kennebunkport called The Clam Box, I think, which had great lobster and what I seem to recall were mushrooms stuffed with clams (boy, were those good!) It was a real hole-in-the-wall kind of place, not on the main drag. Wonder if it's still there... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif

I will let you know if it is still there after we go. We have stayed in Kennebunkport, but have decided to stay down the road in Wells this year. Next year we are going to the WEST INDIES...I can't wait!

Used to travel for work quite a bit and loved seeking out good restaurants...
Maui: Mama's Fish House - incredible seafood and ambience.
Kauai: Postcards Cafe - also great seafood and cute victorian house
Washington DC: I haven't been in a couple years but we enjoyed Red Sage as well as Nora. Nora is "certified organic" and Red Sage is hard to describe - Upscale southwestern, very inventive.
Portland OR: (my stomping ground) Caprial's Bistro, Paley's Place, Laslow's....to name a very few.
Now I'm getting hungry!! :-)

Idle curiosity-- do they still have screenless windows? Last time I was there, (ages ago, back in the early eighties) it seemed I was dinner! The waiter actually brought me an insect repellant towelette! I've heard so many great things about the food, I'd love to go back and try again some time, even if I have to spray with Off beforehand. (Apparently, to mosquitos I am filet mignon...) Great atmosphere, like you said-- next time I'd like to be able to enjoy the food!

We have had excellent seafood at Alexander's on Hilton Head (on the road to the Hilton and Hyatt Hotels). We also had a very nice dinner in the formal dining room in the Westin Hotel. I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but it was quiet, relaxing and had excellent service.

Hilton Head has some of the best restaurants around. They have a great restaurant guide with all the menus listed for each. We go every year and have a very hard time deciding where to go but one place we never miss is not in the guide and that is Charlie's Etole. It is in Palmetto dunes plantation and their menu changes daily. If you are a chocolate lover don't miss the Pave au Chaocolate ( TO DIE FOR ) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Gail - it was still pretty "open air" as I recall - we were there this past February. I think I remember heat lamps or something - maybe they added bug zappers! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I still dream of the passionfruit creme brulee - by far the best dessert I've had in a long time....

My favorite restaurant is the River Cafe in New York. The food was wonderful! The atmosphere was the best, you dine over the water overlooking New York city.

I have recently moved to Charleston, and we don't eat out much but...there is a wonderful restaurant called The Mustard Seed. It has wonderful seafood and has a nice presentation. Keep in mind that it looks like a shack from the outside. I love it. I've had the best salmon in my life there. It's on the healthier side too. It's on James Island right across the connector. Do not go to Hymen's Seafood. It was rated #1 and everyone that lives here is still trying to figure out why. Very overrated. There's also a great place on Queen street called Poogan's Porch. A little touristy but wonderful brunch and atmosphere.Shem Creek is also a fun place to go.There are around 7 seafood restaurants right on the water where you can sit outside and watch the boats come in.Vickory's (sp ?) is one of the best. I hope you have a wonderful trip!
