I'm new to grinding flax seed. I bought a blender and ground up a bunch. However, I did not measure to see how much whole flax seed makes 1/2 cup ground. Since I do not have any whole left at the moment, I can not experiment.

Does anyone know, off hand, how much whole it takes to make 1/2 cup ground? I would assume it is very close, but am not sure. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Just moving this up - hoping someone will know.

Thanks for the info. Are you saying you end up with more in quantity than you started with? I guess it is fluffy, but that's 1/4 cup more for each 1/2 cup?

I think I will try it with equal amounts. It's for a bread, so I don't think it will make too much difference if it a little off.

I was surprised too - I would have thought that there would be less ground than whole. I took this from the Flaxseed Bread recipe in Jan/Feb. 2000. Bread is very forgiving though so I'm sure it won't matter to that level of detail.

RunnerKim - is this ratio true for everything, such as coverting whole cumin seeds to ground?

I don't know... I would think it would be a good estimate if cumin seeds are about the same size as flaxseeds.

Funnybone, this is what I have in a recipe:

Place 1/2 cup flaxseed in a spice or coffee grinder; process until finely ground to measure 3/4 cup

Okay after confirming with my husband (he's an engineer and my math skills get rusty when its so much easier/faster to just ask him)

It's a 1:1.5 ratio (whole:ground) so you'd need 1/3 cup (5 1/3 tablespoons) to make half a cup. (Divide what you want ground by 1.5 to get what you need in whole flaxseeds)
