...now I have a question. Am I missing something or is it supposed to be open at the top? I have the Cuisinart, and the diagrams in the manual are unclear. It has the opening so that you can pour in additional ingredients, but it seems like it should also have a cover over that opening. I hope this makes sense.
I will have to put in a plug here for Crate and Barrel. I ordered from the internet, it cost about $75 including tax, shipping and an extra bowl, and I received it in less than a week.

I have a Deni, I too wondered about the top and called their 800 #. They are all like that. After you start the icecream maker, you pour in the ingredients thru that opening in the top, and thats it!

That top is open for a reason! The first time I tried to make ice cream in my Cuisinart, I dumped the ingredients in the bowl, put the top and paddle on, and turned it on. Nothing but grrrr grrrr grrrr. The mix had already frozen to the sides, and the paddle couldn't move! So lesson learned: assemble first, turn on, pour in mix!!

KellyD - Me too! Didn't read the instructions close enough and actually broke the paddle. So SusieO make SURE you turn on the motor BEFORE you pour the mixture in the bowl.
Have fun!!

I bought one, I bought one! I couldn't stand it any longer...all the posts...yummy gelato recipes. I bought the Cuisinart at lunch today. DH asked "did we really NEED an ice cream maker?". "Think of the money we'll save not giving it to the Haggen Daz company!" I said.

I bought my ice cream maker last summer and I love it. I found that the whole vanilla beans from Pensey's are the best quality and the best price I've found. Try the recipe in the Cuisanart ice cream cookbook which uses the the whole vanilla beans. There is also a super easy recipe that uses instant chocolate pudding. Tastes like fudgesicles, and the kids liked it. The rich vanilla is our favorite though.
SusieO,
If you like coconut and almonds, try the vanilla recipe only substitute coconut extract for the vanilla extract and the last five minutes, add coconut and toasted almonds. Wonderful!

Ooh, thanks for the tip, Pat. Do you think that would also be good with chocolate ice cream? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
