Hi folks- my nephew had this rash yesterday and my SIL though that chunky pb might've been the culprit. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the smooth and the chunky (other than the obvious, ofcourse)?? Some ingredient that might cause an allergic reaction?? He can eat smooth pb and peanuts with no problems. Hubby and I seem to remember hearing something in the past, but we can't remember for sure. He suggested I ask you fine folks since someone always knows the answer!

Thanks!

I can't help with the PB question, but thought I'd post another rash culprit... sunscreen. He may be allergic to sunscreen if he's wearing that OR, as I sadly found out this summer, someone may have accidentally gotten a teeny bit in his eye as they overzealously coated him to be sure no sun would burn him... My one year old swelled up all around one side of his face after this happened one morning. At first I thought it was a bug bite...

This has nothing to do with peanut butter. I just wanted to say welcome back! We've missed you!

The ingredients would depend on the brand of pb. I always buy all natural, which consists of only peanuts. The chunky just has bits of peanuts, and the smooth is all ground up. Other brands may contain sugars, oils, etc. and the chunky may very well be different than the smooth. But I don't think that there would be a drastic difference, and that it would cause the rash. I agree with the others that it might be heat related, sunscreen, etc.

I'm not an expert, but I have heard that food allergies can develop suddenly. I can't see there being a difference between chunky or smooth, other than the presence of the peanuts. Was it the same brand of peanut butter?

Also, the rash may not even be food related - maybe he was in the sun too long, or a new soap may have been used, or even sunscreen.

I would keep an eye on it and even call the doctor's office and ask. It can't hurt.

Oh, another thought is to call the peanut butter manufacturer. They may be able to help you.

I don't have any suggestions, I just wanted to say that it's so nice to see a post from you on the board! I haven't been keeping up with the baby threads lately, so I'll have to go check to see how everyone's doing!

If he has eaten peanuts and peanut butter in the past, it may not be the culprit. I know that my kids get rashes from sweat. They are VERY active and if they don't get a bath after sweating heavily one day, the next day (or even that evening) they will have a rashy look to the areas that sweat the heaviest, legs, the side under the arm etc. My son is starting to show signs of pimples on his nose. My problem is just getting him to wash his face (not just show his face the towel). When he wears his hat (baseball) and gets sweaty he gets a pimply looking rash next to his hair line.

Keep looking at it and see if it goes away, but if it doesn't, it's definitely something to bring to his pediatrician.

I can't tell you more about peanut butter looks like you have plenty advice from those before me. But I had to post and say hello. Motherhood is keeping you busy but we miss you. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

My neighbor's son is highly allergic to all things peanut. He can't even eat foods that were processed on equipment that may have previously processed peanut products. (That's a lot of letter p!) So if a peanut allergy has developed, it wouldn't matter if the pb was chunky or smooth.

Thanks for the replies! I miss all of you, too. Sometimes I lurk and just read posts because I have a baby in one arm and it's hard to type with one hand!!

My SIL thinks it may be the sunscreen, even though it said it was hypoallergenic. I guess it can still give you a rash, though. Her son is very sensitive to things. But then again, he was over his aunt's house and she buys some "weird" things. Probably not weird by CL standards, but I can see her buying peanut butter with something weird in it. My nephew said he had to choke down half of the sandwich and then snuck off to throw the other half out! Poor kid!

Hopefully, I'll be around a bit more on the BB. I do miss all you guys and have so much catching up to do. However, as all you moms already know, babies are alot of work!! I do try to sleep when she sleep so I can deal with the 3:00 am calls better. I didn't get my nap today, though, so I hope she sleeps alot!

Hi Susan!

I don't have any pearls of wisdom on this, but I just wanted to say hi and welcome back!

Just a note on the sunscreen -- I have a friend whose daughter can only use one brand of sunsceen --Coppertone for Babies. She has tried tons of other supposedly hypo allergenic, and they all give a rash. So you just have to find the one that works and stay with it.
Also--on the subject of mystery rashes--I got my son a shirt at a very nice second hand store. he wanted to wear it right away, and within 15 min. had a terrible rash. It was a reaction to whatever soap or rinse the previous owner had used. Now I wash everything, even if it comes from my sister!

I am HIGHLY allergic to all sunscreens but one - even when they're supposedly hypo-allergenic. I can use Clarins. Also - I can't get in public swimming pools b/c of the sunscreen that washes off of people. Adn think about contact with other kids with different brands of suscreen. Playing frisbee once, I broke out - sunscreen from the frisbee transferred to me.

This developed for me when I was in college - before that, I had not had problems, except with really strong sunscreens. (I still can't wear anything over SPF 10, even if it's Clarins.) Fortunately I don't burn easily!
