Hi everyone,
My sweet boyfriend is getting his wisdom teeth removed this Friday. I was hoping to be able to cook him some interesting things other than the usual soup and jello. Any suggestions?
TIA!

I ate mashed potatoes the entire week after I got mine out! Maybe you could add in some blue cheese and garlic and stuff?

Smoothies (eaten with a spoon, of course) and pudding is what I existed on for that week. I really didn't have much of an appetite for anything heavy, but if he is, a nice macaroni & cheese is pretty filling.

I drank Carnation Instant Breakfast for a week when I had my wisdom teeth removed! Applesauce and pudding are probably obvious. How about some pasta sauce without the pasta? Or you could try putting some more "solid" foods in the blender.

I'm going through this with my husband, who had gum grafts done last week. On my counter I have a juicer, food processor, vitamix, mini processor and the immersion blender. What I've cooked so far:
Started out with making large quantities of chicken broth, beef broth, and ham broth (used ham shanks). Made the broth with lots of carrots which later ended up in the food processor with a little of the broth for a delish soup.
Black bean soup: Saute up some onion, garlic, jalapeno pepper, carrot. Add ham broth and blend to thin consistency. Yummy.
Chicken and rice soup. Chicken broth, carrots, onions and rice. Blend.
Lobster bisque (for father's day dinner) from CL complete. Lobster meat does not puree very good so I got the meat. The soup was very good.
Mashed potatoes and hamburg. Browned ground round and seasoned heavily with onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Then pureed the meat. It was a gross color so I added Kitchen Bouquet. It looked gross but it tasted very good.
Beer cheese soup - not light, but very tasty. One can beer, 4 cups chicken broth. Add lots of chopped celery, onion and carrot. Boil til tender. Add one pound velveeta and 1/2 pound cheddar. If you can't have solids, blend the soup before adding cheese.
Potato tarragon soup. Cook potato chunks in ham broth until tender. Add a handful of fresh taragon with potatoes before cooking. Blend if no solids permitted. Very Yummy!!
Gazpacho: tomotoes, cucumber, onion, peppers, red wine vinegar - puree.
We've got corn in the garden so tonights soup will be one from CL Complete - corn and zuccini, I think.
Still to come: Cream of mushroom soup, roasted garlic and potato (from CL Complete).
For breakfast we've been having cream of wheat seasoned with cinnamon and honey.
The juicer has been used for apples, pears, pineapple, etc. Also juiced some tomatoes, cukes and peppers.
Smoothies made with a carton of ff yogurt (peach), 1/2 cup skim milk, 1/2 cup oj, 1/2 cup sliced frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries and a scoop of protein powder; blend with a cup of ice. Very filling, cold, and good.
They also make "drikable" yogurt now. It's very expensive, but for a quick meal it's OK.
Most veggies can be cooked til soft and pureed - peas, carrots, potatoes, squash, etc.
Good luck. My husband is at the dentist as I type and hopefully he can start eating something besides liquids. Cooking this way is a lot of work.

Wow Donna P, you are so organized!!
Adgirl Will you give your boyfriend one bit of advise from me? I was told that if you talk right after surgery, they will release you sooner. WRONG Did I shout that loud enough? My cheeks exploded into a chipmunk's and even my surgeon was concerned!! As soon as my eyes opened I insisted that I was fine and talked a blue streak so that they would let me go home. I spent 2 days in the hospital because I thought I was doing the right thing!!
Everyone's advise above sounds wonderful. Sorbet sounds the best, maybe homemade? Val are you listening? I hear an ice cream maker in the works...

I got mine out on a Friday and we went to a BBQ dinner on the Sat. I didn't eat the steak, but everything else was no problem.
Mine we not impacted, so I really did not have any pain, swelling and usual discomfort. I had all four out at once too. I had been putting the surgery off for years out of fear, and then finally was brave enough.
Depending on his teeth, he may not have to forgo the food afterall - or at least for long.

I just had mine out in March--all four at once--and was back on regular foods the by the evening of the next day. I spent most of the day that I had my surgery sleeping, so apart from some scrambled eggs & mashed potatoes, eating was not an issue. If his teeth are not impacted (his pre-surgery consultation should have revealed it if they are), you may not need to worry about mushy foods beyond the first 24 hours.

I had mine out about two years ago...I don't remember eating for a few days afterward. The idea of eating just grossed me out. I actually ended up getting an infection afterwards...just be careful whatever he eats that the surgery site stays really clean.
I hope it goes well!

I remember being home after I had mine out, eating mashed potatoes and chocolate ice cream while watching the OJ Simpson preliminary trial. So now, whenever anyone mentions having their wisdom teeth out, I always think of mashed potatoes, chocoate ice cream and OJ Simpson. Weird, huh?
Wow, Donna, your husband is lucky! (Other than having surgery today, that is! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif)
I had four impacted Wisdom Teeth, and spent 3 days in the hospital. I recall (this was over 2 decades ago!) that I only wanted cold things for a week or so, because it helped my mouth feel better. I loved milkshakes, smoothies, yogurt, etc.
One thing that stands out in my mind is that I never remember seeing so many food commercials on TV as when I was recuperating and could not eat! I literally had drool coming out of my mouth a few times while watching the ads!
When my sister and I had our teeth taken out in High school. My sister had a reaction to the anstesia sp what was funny she looked like one of the chipmonks. I on the otherhand responded quite differently it looked i had a hang over. what made weird i was working at Fuddruckers a hambuger place and two days after the surgery having a burger. Boy did it feel weird. Good luck my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thanks so much everyone! He's so apprehensive about it, I keep trying to assure him it won't hurt that much but one of his friends keeps telling him it was the most painful experience of his life. He's not helping! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif Hopefully everything will go well!
Any other recipes/thoughts would be helpful!

I am having my wisdom teeth cut out (not just pulled) next Thursday, so I was glad to see this topic on the message board. Does anyone know how long it might take to recover? I've heard so many different stories, I don't know what to expect.

Adgirl, please try to convince your sweetie that he'll be fine. I too was totally freaked out having my wisdom tooth out (just one, not impacted) and ended up having a panic attack in the chair before they even did anything!. And I had my mother come over to take care of me. I'm 27 years old and was crying like a baby in that chair.
So anyway, my point is that's he's got to be positive. I never really had any pain.
After the second day, I ate normally, just very carefully. I was really squicked out about getting stuff in the hole and then getting dry socket.

Matt - I can relate about the hamburger. My son came home after he got his wisdom teeth out and ate the leftovers of a hamburger (In-and-Out burger if that means anything to anyone!) that he just had to have before we left for the dentist! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif He pretty much ate everything he did before only a little more carefully for a couple of days. Go figure!!

Mine were impacted and I had them (all four) removed at the same time when I was 18 with just novacaine. Thinking back, how stupid was I? I remember eating a lot of drinkable foods. One biggie that it looks like no one has mentioned is DO NOT suck hard through a straw. It can cause clots to break loose. Also, I think that my oral surgeon gave me some type of syringe thingy to rinse the area after I ate so bacteria wouldn't grow.
One of my friends took me out for dinner after I got my stitches removed and all I wanted was a McChicken Sandwich (hey, it was 21 years ago and I was 18). I couldn't get my mouth open far enough to take a bite. My jaw wasn't used to opening up to chew food! I had to take the sandwich apart and eat it in pieces.

Be sure to get the small ice bags for your cheeks--they have a screw off top and you put in ice. It mad a big difference for me in keeping the swelling down.

one idea may seem funny, but it works. Take two cotton socks, put ice in the toes and tie them togther at the top. Lay them over his head so the toes are at his cheeks, works great, looks like a lopped eared rabbit! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I was so glad to see this thread!
I am currently suffering from a flare-up of TMJ, so I need to get onto soft foods for the next 2 weeks...bummer!
I have some fish that I am going to make, and thought I could probably eat scrambled eggs.
The thing is, is that other than my sore jaw, I feel fine! I almost wish I would lose my appetite the way I would after surgery, because I am so hungry! We'll try the fish and see how it goes...
Thanks for the ideas!

I had mine out in high school - no problems with the teeth, but I ended up getting sick b/c I didn't eat enough & got low cholesterol. (Odd I know.) Anyway, I was out of school for a week - but the teeth healed in a day & no pain killers for me - didn't need them. Everyone's experience is different depending on what the problem is with the teeth & if the roots are wrappaed around the jaw bone. (I'll stop there - grossing myself out!)
First thing to remember - NO STRAWS for drinking. If someone said that before, sorry - I didn't see it.
My other suggestion besides alot already made - yogurt, thin soup, apple sauce, milkshakes, ice cream, instant breakfasts etc - is baby food. Also sounds icky perhaps - but the fruit flavors were pretty good from what I remember.
