I will be moving soon and absolutely refuse to lug around 10+ years of CL magazines. You all have convinced me to buy MasterCook so that I can have at least some years already on my computer and I plan to buy at least the 1999 and 2000 CL cook books. But what about the really old issues. Do any of you have tried and true measures for indexing old recipes without me having to type in each one? I appreciate all input.

p.s. if this message posts twice it is because I am a computer geek and in an effort to edit my post the whole message disappeared. I am assuming it is in cyberspace somewhere, but I don't plan to expend the energy to find it! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif

Don't have any special tips for organizing your recipes (sorry!) but just had to comment on your 10+ years of CL issues! I can only imagine all the wonders they must contain. I only discovered the magazine 3 years ago and am overwhelmed with all the good things I've found. I hope you're planning to give your old issues away to other cooking enthusiasts in your area, or to a hospital, or WHEREVER, when you move. Those are too good to be relegated to the trash or recycling... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
All the best for your move!

I am embarrassed to admit I hadn't even thought of donating them. Great idea? Any takers here in Jackson Hole?

Laura,

I just got MasterCook Suite. It has CL issues from 1992 to 1998. I'm not sure if they include every recipe or just selected ones; however, I just posted that question on Sierra's bulletin board. As soon as I get an answer, I'll let you know. If it includes ALL the recipes from each year, that'll cut down considerably on your indexing! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Thanks. I should probably know that before I start giving things away.

Hi Laura - I sure wish I lived anywhere near Jackson Hole - I would scoop them up in a minute! If you don't find anyone interested in them, your local library would probably love to get them.

Good luck in your move - hopefully it's to someplace great?

What about E-bay? I am not a visitor there but I bet some people would be interested...maybe some CLers here would bid. Just a thought! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Laura,

I checked with Sierra about the recipes included in MasterCook. Apparently, some of the annual CL books included are complete, and some are just "highlights", but it's a fair share per year. For instance, 1993 has 237 recipes, 1994 has 487 recipes, but no March/April etc....

So I'm not sure how much that helps you with indexing. You might want to see if CL has the previous years available on diskette. I know they don't currently have them listed on the web site, but they might have them in their archives.

Hope this helps. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

i just had this problem, only with a year's worth of issues though. what i did was cut out whole pages of recipes that i had previously dog-eared in the magazine. i then put the cut out pages into those protective plastic sheets and put them into a 2" three-ring binder. i hope to eventually organize them by course type but for now i just have them all together. the plastic sheet is great for cooking from because spills clean up easily off of them. and if you don't decide to do this, i agree with the ebay suggestion, i'd love old issues http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thanks for the input. What I did with my really old issues (1988 - 1991) is cut out all the articles/ads and left the recipes intact and put the slimmed down version of the magazines with the cover and index in 3 ring binder. The main problem that I am having with my project is that I start reading the magazines as if they are new and want to start cooking "new" "old" recipes. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

I too have the Cooking Light Magazines since their beginning in 1987 and have wondered why Cooking Light hasn't run an annual index on all their years. I still find alot of wonderful recipes in the older issues. I have kept them all and have a shelf in my kitchen for these great magazines. I have catagorized them by months because I feel that works the best as far as foods in season and holiday ideas. I hope that you will keep them as I did because there are many treasures to be found in these issues. PS(I have moved 12 times since the first issue and my husband keeps saying at every move - "What is in these boxes that are so heavy" I just laugh everytime. One of the first things he did in our new house(the one with the really big kitchen I plan on finally staying in)is make that Shelf just for those heavy boxes. Decisions, Decisions.
HEY Cooking Light - how about an index for the early issues!!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif

Hi Laura,
I really like your idea of putting the trimmed old issues in a three-ring binder. I might end up doing that as I continue to accumulate issues! Even with new issues, I sometimes skim quickly through the first half of the magazine and then cut it out and just keep the recipes portion. And I also end up rereading my old issues as if they were new - I find that I've always skipped over or missed recipes that I'd like to try!
Anyway, happy moving (if that's possible... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif)

Cool! I finally got one of those fire things by my post! Anyway thanks for all the encouragement and ideas. Now if I can just stop re-reading all my old issues and actually start organizing the rest of my home, this move might actually happen!

FYI - I was in the Recipe search section of the homepage and they have the recipe index for years 1994-1999. Hope that helps.

Thank you! With the idea of cutting out the non-recipe part of the magazine, all of you who suggested that have solved my dilemma of where to store thenext batch of CLs.

I've only subscribed since late 1998 and I'm already running out of room.

Thanks again.
