i bought a new dresser a couple months ago, but i haven't used it much yet because everything i pull out of it smells like a friggin two-by-four! what do i need to do to get rid of this smell?
i guess i could load it with plaid shirts and do a little aerobics before donning one and then try to pass myself off at the bar as a lumberjack... would it work, ladies?
do you think cleaning the dresser with vinegar-water would help? i'd appreciate any suggestions. thanks.

i know that wadded up fresh newspaper helps to get rid of musty odors....

You could try lining the drawers, and/or tossing in sachets to make your clothes smell like, say, lavendar rather than lumber.
Or, you could send me the dresser, because I like that 2x4 smell. ;)

Take a bar of your favorite bath/shower soap, and leave it in there. In one day the smell should be gone and your clothes will smell like you.

It sounds like it is a new unfinished dresser and the smell is the raw wood more than a musty old dresser smell; if that's the case you might want to consider staining the wood or at least sealing it with a coat of varnish to cure the smell. Drawer liners or sachets like others suggested will also help but will more mask the smell than eliminate it.
If it is older and a musty smell I would take all the drawers out, clean the whole thing with Murphy's wood soap and let dry in the sun if possible; then use the drawer liners or a bar of soap as previously suggested. I noticed in a consignment shop I frequent they stick bars of Irish Spring in the mustier items and it does wonders.
