View Full Version : Baby Boomers: Do you remember...

the following children's book:
A babysitter has the magical ability to make all of the faucets in the house run with different flavors of soda pop? I recall the illustrations, simple pen and ink drawings. The babysitter was a man, the kids were a brother and a sister, and they were intrigued that the bathtub faucet flowed with root beer, and the sink flowed orange soda, the kitchen sink with grape soda. When the parents returned home, the faucets flowed water again.
I read this in the early 60's - have asked librarians, searched Amazon, Google, EBay, etc. & asked countless people over the years if they remember this book. I LOVED it when I was a kid and hoped to find it for my kids when they were younger. No luck.
The topic came up in conversation with my DH the other night, and I thought: I know who to ask! Anyone remember this book & the title?
On that note, remember: Fuzzy Wuzzy soap, Gerald McBoing Boing, Fizzies, Liddle Kiddles, Astro Boy, Davey and Goliath, Funny Face drink mix...that's enough for now.

I think you're looking for Mr. Pudgins by Ruth Christoffer Carlsen. It was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1951

LOL--I am not a boomer but we LOVED Mr. Pudgins. Last year, my mother found three used copies online and sent them to me, my sister and my brother for a gift. I showed it to DH and I confess Mr. Pudgins seemed a little creepier than he did when I was a child, but the book still is a fun one.

Never heard of that book, but I remember Fizzies (especially root-beer flavor), Davey and Goliath, Astro Boy and (commercials for) Liddle Kiddles.
I also remember a drink mix called "Keen" - it came in a jar, and you mixed a spoonful of the powder with water to make a Kool-Ade type drink. No one seems to remember this but me. It even had a jingle "Keen, Keen, Nestle's Keen. New soft drink mix for kids. Keen, Keen, Nestle's Keen, the flavor makes you flip your lid." How is it that I can remember that???!!!

My SIL mentioned that she had one when she was little and really liked them about 2 years later I went to a garage sale and they had all of them, or at least 8 I think. I bought them and it was sooooo hard to save them for a Christmas present but I did and she loves them. They are lined on the cabinets in her kitchen.
I loved the "grape" one, but I can remember their names....

Goofy Grape
Lefty Lemon
Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry
Freckle Face Strawberry
Jolly Olly Orange
Loud Mouth Lime
Choo Choo Cherry
They added a black cherry and some other flavors later, but I am a purist......and you are wonderful SIL, I would have loved that gift, I hope she appreciates them!

So do I !! Funny story, my father had a tube of alka selzer and I thought they were fizzies  You guess it, I popped a couple in my mouth :o
Not even close to fizzies and to this day the thought of alkz selzer makes me gag :p

I do, I do!!!! I LOVED the Funny Face drink mixes. Lefty Lemon was my favorite. I'll have to look at my Mom's - she used to have a couple of the mugs around. They were pretty beat up but my brothers kids loved them so she kept them around. I always told her not to throw them out, but who knows if she did or not......

Gerald McBoingBoing was one of my favorite cartoons! I've never met anyone else (except DH) that remembered!!! :D
We used to use Fizzies all the time! My parents didn't want to take soda bottles out to our cabin -- had to travel by boat, and we were very loaded down -- so us young'ns had to drink Fizzies with lake water... not my favorite memory, I can tell you!
I remember Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry, but didn't remember that it was a Funny Face drink...

It's amazing what you forget and then remember!! I remember some kind of straw that had flavored powder in it. You would put the straw in a glass of milk and when you drank through the straw - you'd taste the "strawberry" flavor or whatever - I have a vivid memory of the milk turning like pink!
We used a lot of Zarex !! It was really special when you added a bottle of gingerale to it !!
Of course, there was Ovaltine - not the kind they make today - it used to be much better... It was like granules - we used to put them in a small dish and eat them dry.
And malted milk. I used to put so much malted milk in the glass that it wouldn't dissolve and as you drank it, the remaining powder would "burst".

I was born at the tail end of the baby boom, so I don't remember some of the things mentioned here, but Liddle Kiddles are some of my best memories! My sisters and I LOVED those things, with their little capsules and perfumey scents. My favorites were Rose and Violet. I was a lot more prissy when I was little. If you knew me now, you'd never believe I EVER played with any dolls! The other one I remember is one my sister had called a Mrs. Beasley doll. She was like someone's grandma, and you pulled a string and she'd say things in this old lady's voice. Kind of annoying after awhile.
I remember the ads for Funny Face drink mixes, but my mom was anti-sugared anything, so she never bought them. Funny how I can still sing all the ads for all those things we weren't allowed to have. (Remember the Choo Choo Charlie song for Good 'n Plenty candy?)
ETA: Congrats, Ginger, on reaching your 1000th post! :D

I found my Little Kiddles in a box in the attic last summer and they still smelled like bad perfume!
I also remember Funny FAce drinks, but who remembers 7-11 Slurpee names? I still have a button that says "I'm Fulla Bulla" which I recall was one drink name. I remember riding our bikes to the pool and stopping by the 7-11 and waiting for the new flavors.
Gerald McBoingboing is back on Boomerang network.
Ms. Beasley was the doll that one of the kids had on Family Affair TV show with the two kids and the older sister and the Dad (no Mom) and the little girl's doll was "Ms. Beasley". I saw one at a yard sale recently.

3 Stooges, yes, absolutely.
ditto flavored straws. (blech! i'd never feed that to my kids!)
i think i'm younger than some of you here, or else it's regional.
i mean, anyone remember Captain Kangaroo? Howdy Doody? Wonderama, (game show on Sats. where winner got to take home as many games as his/her arms would hold). Soupy Sales? Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop??? my dad was in advt'g and i was in the audience of them a few times as a youngster.
TRUE STORY: my BGF (we were 7) "won" a bicycle on one of those shows. the persons in charge tried to weasel out of it. thank heavens she had a really feisty Italian-Am. dad -- a very straight guy--but it took him maybe 4 months of hounding them until they parted with the bike.
ironically, i got to know the actual CK (Bob Keeshan) and SS (whose name now eludes me) in my 20's, when their careers were a fading memory; such nice people.

well, perhaps older, then. i thought i was on the low end of the baby-boom. i'm not that close to 60, which is the age the media keeps citing.
Bozo, yup. ditto Pinky Lee. i believe Soupy S. legally changed his name, but it would be easy to google (i'm not that curious).
TV i also vividly recall:
Beulah
Lassie
Our Miss Brooks (Eve Arden! best female wiseacre in showbiz)
Dennis the Menace
Bonanza (my mother's favorite show)
Jeopardy at mid-day when i went home for lunch (imagine that!!! LOL)
Bachelor Father (John Forsythe!)
Ed Sullivan (Sunday evening staple)
Father Knows Best
Leave it to Beaver
Million Dollar Movie (with the GWTW theme)
Mickey Mouse Club!
one with Gale Storm...
one with Spring Byington...
The Farmer's Daughter (Inger Stevens)
The Donna Reed Show
The Dick van **** Show
Uncle Miltie (Berle)
The Honeymooners
What's My Line?
I've Got a Secret
This is Your Life
Concentration
Queen for a Day!!!
sheesh, and i thought my kids maybe watched too much tv, shame on moi. :D
anyone recall how Lucky Strike (for example) would sponsor a game show, and the 'lucky' winner would leave with 10 cartons of smokes?
the truly fascinating thing to me about the above-mentioned TV shows is that i'm a serious older films buff, primarily into 1930's and 40's cinema, and so very, very many of the 50's-60's TV stars were HUGE film stars in those years. i'm not good with some of the lesser names, but i'll be watching an old film and say, "That's Mr. Wilson!!!" or "That's Timmy's mother!!!"
--this i do know was June Lockheart...has anyone else seen her early films, when she was a young girl? she was in a lot of great films. and so was Donna Reed, who was a stunner. Spring Byington was always marvelous in character roles. and FKB--Robert Young--one of the most dashing figures in 30's films, always turning up on TCM.
thanks for the terrific trip down Memory Lane...

I'm technically a "boomer" (born 9/64) but never felt part of the cohort; they had two grades in some of my classrooms and schools were closing left and right because there were so few children around...didn't feel very boom-like to me! Rob (if i may:) or else, correct us; Bob? Robbie? Bobby? Robert?) i'm teasing, but we're into generation IV of Robert Francis B----, so it begs the question, since each one has his own moniker.:) tx for the Romper Room info...i did notice you were on for what, 2 weeks? now, was that 10 shows? were they all filmed in 2 days? where did you live that you were on the show? inquiring minds....
"Shake a Pudding"--not in my house. we made it from scratch, and it was one of the few things i was allowed to help prepare. hey, you should have seen the drama when i wanted Daffodil Bread instead of the Pepp Farm my mother always bought...she relented, and then i ate nothing but Daff Bread and lettuce sandwiches (i kid you not!) for about 2 months for lunch...
if you knew what i had to endure for supper, maybe you'd grasp THAT contest of wills.... i mean, what 7-y-o gets excited about shad roe? or oyster stew? or tongue? i was cool with that until i saw it in the supermarket one day and grasped what it was....
i lived for meatloaf and mashed, or (real) baked mac 'n cheese, or even spaghetti w/ the all-day-long simmered sauce, which were rare. usually my mom was busy trying new recipes from Gourmet and LHJ, very similar to Sara Moulton's anecdotes (we grew up a few blocks apart, 3 weeks apart in age, and diff schools).
not sorry to hijack the thread. we're talking childhood reminiscences, after all.

Shake shake shake a puddin...puddin puddin shake a puddin...
Whenever my kids have to shake something I always start singing that commercial and my kids (and 40 year old DH) look at me like I am looney!
And what was the name of that jello that separated into a three part "parfaits". I remember my Mom buying "parfait" glasses and using them for that. Okay, she also used them for "fancy parfaits" that she used for dinner parties.....Vanilla ice cream and cool whip with creme de menthe poured in and frozen. I remember loving them. Yes, this was the early 70's!
Does anyone else remember "Hear come the Brides" from their middle school years? How did the song go? "Oh the air is so clean in Seattle and the hills the greenest green in Seattle. Such a beautiful child, growing up, free and wild, in Seattle, in Seattle"
Or am I getting my theme songs and my old shows confused.

Also, I totally "get" the three stooges ;)
I loved Family Affair with Jodi. The show Here Comes the Bride with Bobby Sherman, I had a poster from the show on my wall. I loved Bobby.
I remember the Jello thingies to, they turned out so cool in the glasses.
I also loved Sunday Nights, we would watch Walt Disney hour and I think it was Gun Smoke or some other western.
I was born in 1960 and really have never considered myself a baby boomer, I went to class once and they classified baby boomers being born up until 1956 so I always thought "once again I just missed something" ha...ha...
Music....The Monkeys, Motown, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams..
Dances...I loved watching American Bandstand & trying to dance like them, I was young and use to hide and watch my older sister and her friends practice during the show.
I love and still watch the old Christmas programs every year. Roudolph (sp) with Burl Ives narrating, the original Cinderela with oh, I cannot remember her name. She played the Mom on Desperate Housewifes, and all my life whenever I see her, I still see Cinderella, does anyone else remember.
The original Peter Pan.
So many memories...

this has been such a joy the past few days!!! but i'm still waiting for someone who also recalls the 10 cartons of cigs that the "What's My Line?" winner would walk away with....
*BINGO!* just pulled another one out of the recesses of my aging brain:
To Tell the Truth--!! i've had that one a bit mixed up with 'WML' i recall that the panelists had to determiine which of the 3 was the "real" one..... in fact, on TCM, i've seen a clip (more than once) involving Errol Flynn, in his 50's, down years...they come out from behind a curtain and say, "I'm So-and So," and then take their seats. and the panelists would get to ask them yes or no questions. yes??? I don't know why I really remember this song, but I have googled it and here it is:

None other than Bobby Sherman singing it.
It sounded much better in my memory!

What a sharp group of boomers you are!
Okay here's one for you -
Do you remember the show "Maya?"
What was it about?
Who were the two main stars of the show?
Which one did I have an adolescent *crush on?
Answers:
An American boy, an Eastern Indian boy and Maya the Elephant.
Jay North (formerly Dennis the Menace) and Sajid Kahn
If you guessed I had a mad crush on Sajid Kahn with the golden eyes, you'd be right!

I was born in 1960 and really have never considered myself a baby boomer, I went to class once and they classified baby boomers being born up until 1956 so I always thought "once again I just missed something" ha...ha...
You didn't miss it. I believe the "official" cutoff was 1964 or 1965, fwiw.

O.K., after spending countless hours viewing thousands of slides at my parents house, I found the slides of me on Romper Room.
This is prolly my only claim to fame. :(

My sister and I both were on Romper Room. My mom made specially designed silk screened and sewed clothes for us to wear on the show. The picture below was taken at our house just before we got into the car to go to the television studio.

OMG, love the photos, Gumbeaux! What a hoot! The only kids' programs I remember watching were Captain Kangaroo (Mr. Green Jeans was so cool!) and the local version of Romper Room (OK, we've already covered off "The New Zoo Review" on this board!!)...I still remember Miss MaryAnn and that the show came from Jack London Square in Oakland...too far away and mysterious for me to attend.
Now, what was the show with the kids in the audience and the box panels that got turned around like on game shows? The song was "Everybody here's got a left and right ear, but noooobody's got an AARDVARK!" OMG, am I completely insane or high or something? Was that really a show/song? Sheesh, next time someone gets going on the demise of quality television, I'll have to ask whether she has an aardvark.

Gumbeaux - your mother MADE those clothes? Very talented lady, your mom. These pix are adorable.
Let's see, if you were in Romper Room in '63, and you were around 5 or 6, were you born in '57?

It WAS better! I don't think Bobby Sherman sang the version used in the show; I recall the singer having a deeper voice. I did like Bobby Sherman's "Easy come easy go".
One of my 6th-grade friends was in love with Bobby SHerman; had over 300 pictures of him on her bedroom walls!
All 3 of the guys in the show were cute - the oldest one, David Soul and Bobby Sherman. Ah, hunky guys in boots with axes. The character names were something like Jason, Joshua and Jeremy, I think. Those names became very popular with (what are now called) "tweens" at that time.
Okay, I'm not a boomer but: I remember cereal boxes (Sugar Smacks, maybe?) having 45s on the box, you cut them out and they actually played (badly, but they played!). Bobby Sherman was one of them, and I can remember thinking he was sooo cute. I remember the Jackson 5 on those boxes too, can anyone remember any others? Archies maybe?

I remember going to a neighbor's house to see "Star Trek" on their new color t.v. My parents bought a color t.v. sometime later, and it was a huge console thing.
Youre not alone, Matt - I thought that the world was black and white in the '50's because all of the t.v. shows were. ;)

Yep! And I do remember Daktari - I always loved animal shows - I watched "Flipper" too!

And what was the name of that jello that separated into a three part "parfaits". I remember my Mom buying "parfait" glasses and using them for that.
Was it
http://www.nscphoenix.com/Jello.jpg
You had to use a blender to fully mix the ingredients, which upon cooling would seperate out into three distinct layers: Regular Jello, a creamy mousse-like middle, and a light creamy top. It came in strawberry and orange.

My parents were very careful with money. We didn't get a color TV for years. When people talking about the "horse of many colors" or how the movie switched to color when Dorothy got to Oz in the Wizard of OZ, I didn't know what they were talking about.

Just thought of another one. Anybody remember some kids' shows with marionnettes? One was space-themed, I think it was called Fireball XL5. The other one was about the sea and mermaids or something, and there was a character and a song called Marina.
Then, of course there was Davey and Goliath, and Gumby and Pokey.
And the animated ones: Gigantor (my brother and I always laughted at this huge robot who looked like he was wearing Mary Jane shoes). Speed Racer. Hercules.
I also have a very vague memory of silent cartoons when I was very, very young. Kind of line drawings of cats and mice; I think the cat used to get hit in the head with a brick thrown by a mouse.

My dad worked at Sears, so he was allowed to bring home items to "home demo."
The first one was a dishwasher that opened on the top, like a washing machine, and the circular top rack spun, breaking most of our glasses!
The first TV he brought home had a 7" screen, with an oil magnifying glass in front of it! For color tv, there was an overlay that stuck on the magnifier... red, green or yellow, but not all at once! The network came on at 5 or 6 pm, and I remember watching Uncle Miltie (Milton Berle) on it. We had to go downstairs and sit in the basement to watch tv, as Mom didn't want to give it space in the living room....
I'm older than I look! :p :D  ;)

Wasn't there a show called Winky Dink that you were supposed to put something on the TV screen? Maybe you were supposed to write on the screen? I think Winky Dink had a head shaped like a star.
I think I watched too much TV as a kid.

Me! I remember those! I only remember that the were there, though, nothing specific about them.
My dad wouldn't allow a TV in the livingroom, which resulted in TVs in bedrooms. Now I refuse to have TVs in bedrooms. Maybe the basement idea was best, LakeMartinGal! ;)
I think it was '76 before we had a color TV. I remember seeing Bewitched in -1970?- and before the program came on, Elizabeth Montgomery would say "in living color". I had no idea what that was supposed to mean, as it was all black and white to me!

Yes, you had to save Winky Dink or some other character, by putting this clear film on the TV and then drawing a bridge or whatever he needed. I can only imagine the number of kids who just got their crayolas and scribbled right on the TV screen.
I don't think that show lasted too long!

lololol!!! oh, man, Gumbeaux, you had me rolling with laughter!!!...and, come to think of it, somewhere there is a photo of me when i was on Howdy Doody...
i've thought of a couple more lately:
Loretta Young had a show....
how's about Dragnet?
Daktari!!! what a blast from the past...i don't think i watched it often (or i was doing homework during).
i can't believe i forgot The Patty Duke Show!!!! "they're cousins, they're two of a kind..." that had me mesmerized, if for no other reason than to fathom how she was onscreen twice, together...
matt, b/w TV was the norm for us...when we got our first color tv, my dad put it in the BR, i got the small b/w in my room, and we got a large b/w in the LR. but i used to go in and watch some shows with my dad. color was quite a novelty.
however, as an ardent fan of old films, color is secondary to the script, story, acting, direction, etc. yes, Wizard of Oz justifies color, as does GWTW, but Citizen Kane, Sunset Blvd, and many other fabulous films go to show that color really isn't essential, same as in photographs.
here's a fun one: TCM this a.m. ran "The 50,000 Fingers of Dr. T," (1953) starring Tom Rettig (first Timmy on Lassie), Hans Conreid, and a script and stage by Dr. Seuss. it was so magical!!! Seuss come to life! i don't believe he ever was involved in another movie project. now, it was in color, which was essential. i recall seeing it at some point, probably on TV at 7-ish, and i remember that it scared the willies out of me, in the bestest Dr. Seuss way.:D
i also cannot resist any showing of West Side Story. not only is it an A#1 brilliant film from all aspects, but i have the entire soundtrack memorized after playing it 10 times/day when i was 10-11-ish.
