I have our car payment set up to automatically enter in Quicken to our checking account when it's paid via automatic withrdrawal. Several times, Quicken has overridden the assigned checking account and logs the funds withdrawn from some random savings or closed account without my realizing it, resulting in an overdraft fee from the bank. Any idea why it would be changing the account without me doing it manually?
Not sure if my explanation above is making any sense... :o

Wow -- I have no idea! My car payment and house payment are made automatically from a credit card, but I have other payments that are debited right out of the checking, and have never had this happen. Perhaps you should call Quicken technical support for the answer... Are all the accounts Quicken has tried to use with the same bank? Have you checked with the loan company to be sure it's not them doing it?

No, it doesn't have anything to do with the actual payment being made, which is correct. It's just a problem with where Quicken is recording it to. It's a paperwork problem, not a financial one. Confusing, I know...

What version of Quicken do you use? And, do you use Quicken Bill Pay, or have you set it up with the creditor to take the money out?

Huh?? Now I am really confused! Even though I am confused, could you save/backup your Quicken files and then try and get rid of the closed accounts? I have MS Money and have closed an account and I hope and pray nothing like this happens to me. But if it does I can refer back to this thread if a resolution is found.

I'm using Quicken 11.0.1 for Mac (2002 Deluxe edition). I still don't think I'm being clear about the problem. My car payment is automatically deducted from our checking acount at a different bank, and has nothing to do with Quicken-- it's done between the two banks. I use Quicken as a check register only-- no online banking through it at all. When Quicken enters the car payment, it's been randomly entering it into account registers other than the checking account register I have it set to-- like our savings account or an old (closed) checking account. I did delete that old checking account register, but it hasn't fixed the problem.

Ok, I understand, now. I'm not sure I can help, since I don't use Mac... and I think they are different.
On my screen, I have a tab under the register that says "scheduled transactions due", and when I click on that, I get a screen that has a tab near the bottom that says "manage full list". When clicking on that, I get a screen that has 2 tabs at the top. It defaults to 'all types', but the other choice is 'monthly bills and deposits'. On that screen, check to be sure the account noted and underlined is the correct account you want Quicken to take the money out of... (mine is in blue, and underlined like a hyperlink.)
If that is not correct, change it. If that is correct, call Quicken support. I don't know if your version is the latest for Mac, and they may have a patch or upgrade to take care of this problem. The Quicken people are very helpful, and they will find the problem and fix it, if this doesn't.
I wish I could have been more help to you... :o

Unfortunately all I can offer is that I hate, hate, hate QUicken for Mac. It is riddled with problems, from some of the forums I read. For instance, when I download transactions, it insists on "matching" up 2 transactions that are completely different (one might be an ATM withdrawal for $80. and one might be a check for $80. posted on a different day. If I don't catch it, it deletes one of those transactions because it thinks it is a duplicate).
Often I will try to use the online payee function, but cannot edit them or open the payees to verify the address, etc. It is completely random, like your problem of it choosing the wrong account.
All I can do it verify everything manually, which is a pain, but better than having bad data in the system. '
The Windows version is so much more intuitive and less buggy.

The Windows version tries to do this, also... A pain, but better than doing all this checkbook stuff by hand! Reconciles only take about 5 minutes, and no cussing! :D
