Good morning ladies!
Sorry I'm getting to this late, but it was a rather busy memorial weekend...which thankfully did not revolve around food :D We had our ice cream night and a lunch out at chili's ..but I was high on the thrill of shopping again at the gap store that I didn't go nuts! I lost another 2.5 thanks to TOM showing up early for a change so I'm thrilled with that. I'm determined to get into my cute summer things before the end of summer! I have my annual wild squad/ww chicago girls' weekend in less than two weeks and I'm thrilled to have a box of clothes to get rid of. The downside is there are some holes in my wardrobe...like one pair of pants right now for work  :D Guess I have to suck it up and wear skirts for awhile. I really don't want to get any suits until fall if I can avoid it.
How's everyone doing? I hope to come up with a snazzy topic, but I'm a tad fuzzy right now. Check in and I'll check back!
Patty it was great to see you!!! Next time we'll have to leave room for the greek yogurt. They make their own there served with a plate of fresh fruit and honey...it is TO DIE FOR. :D
Have a great (short!) week everyone!

I'm happy to be re-joining this thread. The move is over and I now have no more excuses :p I think my official starting weigh is about 173, but I will weigh tomorrow.
My plan for the week is to cook dinner at home (versus eating take out, mostly what we've eaten for the better part of 6 weeks), exercise 4x this week and get back to healthy breakfast and lunches. Oh, and way more water!
JeAnne, congrats on the loss!!!!

I think I'll change my name to YoYo, 'cause I've been up and down for a couple of weeks! I didn't exercise much last week, and that's part of it, but I don't know what else... I'm eating at the low end of the points range, so either I'm counting something wrong, or I've forgotten to journal some food... Anyway, I'm not giving up, though I did succumb to the siren song of raspberry chocolate chips in the cupboard last night... bored, I guess, DH wasn't home. I would never have eaten them if he were home :o
Back on track! Still figuring out the best day/time to weigh for the most consistent results. My eating is very cyclical during the week, so it shouldn't be hard....
Carry on, folks! ;)
ETA - even though I have fluctuated, the pants are still looser, based on previous exercise! WooHoo!

Okay, I've looked at all the threads about exercising, being healthy, etc, and I think I belong on this one :) I would love to join you all if you'll have me!
I don't know how much you want to know about me, but here is a brief intro: Michelle, 31 - I did WW in 2001-02 for about 6 months and lost 70 pounds (was still QUITE a ways from goal, but felt great). Then, I went through a bad bought with infertility and due to stress and lack of self control (I can blame ivf drugs too, but I am sure most was feeling bad for myself), I gained 50 lbs back. The budget is tight after a few years of ivf and I recently lost my part time job, but still I asked for $ for my birthday to join the YMCA and did that over the weekend. I am GOING to go to the Y 4 times per week at least and I am GOING to eat healthier. DH and I joined a CSA and hope that will help us as well. There are only two of us plus baby and we will be getting veggies for 4 in our CSA.
I can't afford WW again, but will use a lot of the principles I learned a few years ago. I am not journaling right now, but I should. DH is heavy as well and is doing more yard work as his exercise and we are both eating right. I think I will talk to him tonight and we will start journaling too. He lost 90 pounds on WW previously and gained about 20 back. We both would like to lose close to 100 pounds eventually. My goal is 20 by July 4.
So today, I was up at 5:30 and went to the Y. I did 25 minutes on the treadmill and walked the track twice as a cool down. Eventually, I will move to weight machines but I know to start slow. I plan to swim once a week too. More than the exercise, the time to myself in the morning is precious. I just stopped nursing in the morning so DH and DS get up together and eat breakfast and get ready for the day, then DH goes to work after I come home, shower and dress. I think it will make a nice routine for all of us.
I measured my cereal this morning and ate a healthy lunch and planned healthy meals for the week. I WILL exercise the rest of the week and I will NOT go out to eat this week!
Okay, so much for the brief into :)
Kim - Nice to "see" you over here!
LMG - I do the same thing with eating when I am alone...it feels almost sneaky, doesn't it? I don't know why we do it, the calories are the same whether our husband's are home or not! :p
JeAnne - I have followed some of your story through the years and seen pics. You look great, keep up the great work and thank you for this thread!

Hi everyone,
I need some motivation to stick to my plan of eating well -- so seeing the scale move down (and stay down) is what I am hoping for.
So trying a few things that will hopefully help...
- Really trying not to bring any "trigger" foods for me in the house. Trigger is chocolate, cookies, etc... Stopping at just one cookie etc, is just not in my vocabulary right now. So not having the stuff in my kitchen helps!
- Everyone always mentions drink the water. Not sure what that does except fill you up (not a bad thing), but I am trying to up the intake. From the old WW days, I have 8 boxes that I draw on a piece of paper -- and cross them out after each glass.
- Took my 20 minute walk after lunch. And, ended up at Starbucks and bought a bottled water instead of a snack.
Best to all!!

Michelle, welcome! Great to see you over here! Like you, I've sort of run out of excuses. The "baby" will be 1 in only 2 months and I'd love to be below my "just got out of the hospital" weight". :o

Hi, Michelle and Applecrisp! Welcome to our little part of the boards. Michelle, you sound like you are determined again -- way to go! Applecrisp, drinking water keeps you hydrated, and most Americans are on the verge of dehydration most of the time, I read. Also, it keeps you full, for awhile, and is good for the kidneys. That being said, I never drink plain water. I should, but just can't tolerate it unless I'm in the middle of exercising! We all have triggers, and learning how to handle them is certainly part of the battle!
Good luck to you both!

Thanks for the well wishes! I got up this morning and did 30 minutes on the stair climber. After about 5 minutes, I thought I would die and told myself to just make it to 10 minutes. At 10 minutes, I started to feel better and pretty soon I did the entire 30! Yeah me! :) I am also journaling today and doing well. I was so hungry between breakfast and lunch, but drank tons of water and waited. I really need to get some Fiber One in the house. That's always my saving grace.

30 minutes!! That's really good! I tried doing 30 minutes on the stationary bike and had to stop after about 15. But I will keep trying till I make it! :D
On the other hand, I have a whole lot of physical activity planned for June. I have done some ballroom dancing the last 2 weeks (2 free lessons of 30 minutes each, courtesy of my little brother), which was a lot of fun. I have 3 private lessons scheduled for later in June for yoga, after which I will just take regular classes once or twice a week. And last but not least, I have my pole dancing class next week! I can't wait to do that one...
Oh, almost forgot! I squeezed in some running last weekend when volunteering at the animal shelter. I was walking this adorable, precious dog, with very short hair and ivory colored. She was so happy to be outside and get some exercise, that it would have broken my heart to stop her from running. So I just ran with her a couple of times around the block. Good thing I was prepared for that and wearing my running shoes. :)
I lost 1.6 last week at WW, and I am working really hard to lose some more this week as well. :)

I weighed in today at WW and am down another 1.4 !!! That makes 6 pounds in 4 weeks. I have to say I'm quite pleased with the pace I'm losing at and hope that it holds.
My biggest challenge this week is that it's my TOM and I just want to eat everything in sight, especially if it's chocolate!!! Any tips that get you guys through this? It's always a miserable week for me, cramps, cravings, mood swings - the works!
Welcome to those who have joined us this week!

Congrats Terri!! As for cravings - Take a chocolate Skinny Cow ice cream sanwich, cut into 6 pieces, put in a bowl. Cover with a ton of strawberries and some ff Cool Whip and drizzle with ff chocolate sauce. YUM for about 4 points.

Grrrr, I am up a pound this week, for no good reason. I am trying not to get frustrated and instead refocusing that effort on really trying hard to shake my last 3 (last week it was 2  ) pounds off before vacation. Three weeks, three pounds. I know it's doable, but it will be tough. Just need to be extra dedicated for a few weeks. Man, these last few pounds are stubborn!
On the plus side, DH & I did a little race on Saturday - a Splash & Dash (500m swim, 5k run). I beat DH out of the water by a few minutes and then held him off on the run until the last 3/4 mile. He ended up beating me by 30 seconds. :(

Delurking here to join you all, if I may. I guess that would actually be re-join, since I used to be on these threads several years ago. I have about 30 pounds to lose. I keep saying it's baby weight, but DS is now 3. :o
I have been successful with WW in the past and could generally maintain what I'd lost. But my last round with WW was not so great. The meeting time was not convenient for me and I didn't like some of the people. One of the people weighing me in told me one day that "I really needed to get it in gear." Instead of motivating me, it pissed me off and I didn't go back. :(
I just did an 8-week program at the gym and didn't lose a pound. I did a resting metabolic test at the beginning of the program, and followed the eating plan (similar to WW core plan) really well for about 6 of the weeks (until I went on vacation). I am so bummed that I didn't lose any weight, although my body fat percentage went down a smidge.
Anyway, so that's where I am. I'm trying to decide what to do next. I think I probably need to find a different WW meeting and go back there. I just haven't made that next step. I live in a small town, so it's going to be a bit of a drive to go to a different meeting.

Hi everyone,
So today I started off great, had the breakfast, lunch, dinner that I had planned. Took a walk after lunch and one after dinner. And only snacks was some grapes and carrots.
I was quite pleased (ok amazed) that I actually turned around during my walk before I reached the icecream/fro yo store.
But around 8:30 pm I was real hungry (ok I think I was) -- drank some water, and then rummaged around and had some bread and cheese. Good thing I didn't have any cookies since I would have gone for those.
So my question is --- how do you handle the evening hours when you want something to eat. Do you eat, not eat, what might you grab...
I wasn't bored or anything so that wasn't the issue.
Any ideas welcome. Thanks!

When I'm truly hungry, I eat. I know myself well enough to know that if I don't, I will get to the point of starving and then I will eat a bunch of crap that I shouldn't. So at the first signs of physical hunger (versus mental hunger and boredom), I will eat something - a piece of fruit, a small handful of nuts, a cereal bar, a couple of whole grain crackers, a lowfat string cheese, a lowfat yogurt, something like that. That will generally keep me for awhile, and I always drink a glass of water or Crystal Light when I eat anything to help keep myself full. If I don't do this, I'm liable to become ravenous a half hour or hour later and devour an entire bag of chips or a bunch of cookies or candy. Not good. :o

Applecrisp - I am a late night muncher. I can't help it, it seems. I'm usually not "hungry", just bored, lonely, whatever. It's something about sitting still. So rather than try to not eat, which usually ends with me in the bottom of an Oreo bag, I plan for it. I leave myself enough WW points each day for a nightime snack. I'll have a fudge pop or something else sweet. Sometimes, if I'm really hungry, a diet coke does the trick. I suppose something about the carbonation is filling to me. I hope this helps!
slknight - Glad you've delurked to join us. I must say that after the way you were treated, I'm glad you didn't return to that WW meeting, but I feel certain that if someone higher up at WW knew about it, she wouldn't be around any longer!!! You should see if the people in that meeting have changed - perhaps it's a nicer group of people now! Regardless, it would be great if you could go to meetings. Statistics show that the people who are successful on WW are generally ones who go to meetings! So, good luck to you and know that we're here to cheer you on - no matter what!

I am still here. Lurking.
I ate within my points (ate activity not all of my flex) for 2 weeks and didn't lose a single pound. :( My friends have said it is too early. I will talk to my Dr at my 6-week check-up next week. I am hoping the breastfeeding is making everything wonky and I will be able to lose this weight. It is so sad :(
Terri - WooHoo!!

I lurk all of the time but would love to join in.
I am 31 and want to lose approx 30-40 lbs that I have gained over the past 4 years. I am currently at 165 which is way too heavy on my 5'2 frame!
My husband and I want to start a family in the next year or so, and I don't want to try until I have the majority of these pounds off. I seem to go in spurts of being great with exercise or food, but rarely the two at the same time.
DH and I love our wine and have been having a couple of glasses a day for too long. We have completely cut out mid week drinking unless it is at a function. To many needless calories! He is being a great support and even had dinner ready for us by the time I got back from the gym last night! I know the weekends will be the most challenging....our social life revolves around weekend dining out....that has to change!
I have a trainer 2x per week but have been/(need to) working on my cardio. Last night I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and followed it by an 15 minute jog on the treadmill. It is a start.
We head on a 10 day vacation (Napa, Carmel and Santa Barbara) in a little over a month and I am hoping to be down about 8 lbs or so. I know it will be hard but I think I am ready this time. FYI, I found a free site called SparkPeople.com where I am tracking/journaling. It is really great for keeping honest.
I look forward to joining in in the weeks and months to come!
Delurking too...
I read these threads often, but I don't post because I'm not here enough to always keep up very well, so I end up feeling like a "drain" on the thread. But I just had to jump in today to add three things:
ChelleD and Slknight, have you tried Sparkpeople.com? I've been using it for three weeks now, and while it's not perfect, it works very well. You decide how you want to structure your eating, and plug in your foods. I love the fact that I can see not only how many calories I've eaten, but also how many carbs, grams of fat, fiber, etc, that I've consumed, and know that I'm in my ranges. It's free, too, which is the best part! I've found it much more user friendly than Fitday.
Molli526, I have also been eating within my calorie range for three weeks and haven't lost a pound. I just stopped taking BCP because they were really messing up my system, and I wonder now if that's one of the reasons I haven't lost. It is sooo frustrating though!
For the water: I was reading in Rachel Ray's magazine that you can add a vanilla bean and a sliced orange to a jug of water and let it sit overnight in the fridge. Haven't tried that yet, but I do put apples, lemons, and limes in water to give it flavor. Cucumber slices in sparkling water are also very refreshing.
Back to lurking...

WOW So many people!!! I have been so busy this week and I wanted to properly address people on the thread hence my absence  :)
Anyhoo I'll go backwards:
krhm - I love flavored water. I had a diet coke today after not having it for 6 months and I have to say I have lost the taste for it completely  I'm thrilled as I was spending so much on diet coke it was silly. I compensated for awhile with crystal light and now I do just a tiny bit of powder for a big thing of water so the ratio is more water to crystal light. My favorite is limes and oranges together in water...very refreshing.
Molli - are you eating the extra points for breast feeding? Just checking..you should be.
For both of you - maybe it's a rut of just eating the same things all the time? Maybe your body has gotten used to the same calories and type of food/quantity of meals and you need to change it up a bit? Either that or really break it down to week 1 basics...measure every thing, write every little thing, drink the water etc..
Hey Susan welcome! Sparkspeople is supposed to be great! It's so funny for all the time I spend on the computer I am just not into tracking online..I guess I like my little fuddy duddy notebook. As to the wine...I love social drinking and it was the first thing to go when I started really trying to lose weight. I just figured it was a way to still get to eat out and not spend so many calories...cutting out drinks to me = one more meal out :D Good luck with your goals...sometimes it makes it easier to have a tangible goal. So put a big pic of the beaches or a sunset on your fridge and keep your eyes on the prize!
applecrisp - if I'm hungry I eat..no question. I try to do a smaller dinner and then have a few points left over for something after words. I also break up dinner and dessert by at least an hour. It seems I'm hungry after dinner regardless of whether I have a 1/2 cup of rice or 1 cup or 1 cup of food or 2. So I cut down dinner, wait and then have something else.
Heya SusanK! - Did you do the body gem thing? I'm only asking because I did it and they had my resting rate really off so they were saying I was supposed to be taking in an average of 1800 calories a day which is just impossible for me to lose weight on. Obviously you have to pick something that's going to work for you and there are so many things to pick from. You just need to figure out what you need the most...boot camp? easier approach? accountability? team support?
Eva the splash and dash sounds awesome!!! And 30 seconds? holy crap I think that's great! It's easy for me to say don't worry about that pound..but at least try not to beat yourself up. The last 5 are notoriously hard and you will get there.
Terri - CONGRATS! I go for salt and volume...so anything low point salty goodness is what I do for TOM. FF popcorn, the TJ sembei rice snacks etc..
Angela - CONGRATS! You are just a losin and working out fool!
Chelle - CONGRATS ON THE GYM AND WELCOME! I am like that on almost every piece of equipment...the talk to even get to the gym, the negotiating to do 5 more and 5 more. The bike I actually like because it is the only piece of equipment where I can read at the same time so I usually can squeeze off 45 without it feeling like hours. I love the elliptical but I bounce a lot so I can't even look at a magazine ...means I need really good tunes to make the time go by!
LMG - Stick with it!!! The pants are a good indicator!
BUFFYKIM - WELCOME BACK! YAY! What are you planning on doing? 6WBMO?

It's so nice to have such an active thread! I gained this week (.2# and it was an evening rather than my usually morning WW meeting, so not bad), but I did have some successes, so I'm trying to focus on those. I was able to walk away from unhealthy food that I did not need (cake-twice!, ice cream, bread that wasn't super, french fries) several times over the weekend. We had a guest in town and ate out a lot, and I didn't do my normal weekend 10pts of exercise so it was a double whammy. The good decision I made was to go to a meeting on Wednesday night (my usual day) to put the week behind me and start over, rather than torturing myself until Saturday trying to punish myself and "make up for it on my own". I am getting healthier. I am now .4 from the 10# mark so that's my goal for this week. And getting back on the exercise bandwagon- got Empire Falls (HBO movie) from the library to watch on the treadmill. Apparently it's a mini-series, not just a movie so lots of treading to do!
applecrisp- I almost always (5 out of 7 nights probably) have a snack at night. This time of year it's ice cream I crave so depending on what kind of points I have left, I have a WW ice cream treat of 1/2-1c. of LF ice cream of some kind. Breyer's has an especially yummy double-churned chocolate. Yum!
slknight- my "baby" is 3 too and when I got back on the wagon this past April I basically weighed what I did when I delivered! The sad part is that I had lost it all in the middle and gained it back. All's well that ends well, right?
Welcome everyone!

Help! I need help with exercising. I am just starting again and trying to take it slow, but my thighs are SO sore! Should I rotate machines more? Should I do only 10-15 min cardio and move on to low weights? It felt great doing 20-30 minutes, but my body is paying for it now. I skipped yesterday at the Y because of soreness and I worked in the yard a bit. Today, I really wanted to go so I did, but could only manage 15 minutes on a bike and then walked around the track 1/2 mile and it was time to leave.
Does anyone have ideas for a fitness plan for a beginner? Any websites you can recommend. I am large, but actually very healthy as far as bp, chol., heart rate, etc.
TIA!
I will have to look into Sparkpeople. I have never heard of it, but I REALLY need more accountability. I journaled for about a half day and that was it! I really need to get on it. I think that's why I want to exercise so much. I like to eat, but I do make fairly good choices. I have a huge sweet tooth and am trying to control it now that ice cream season is upon us.
I also always have a snack at night. In fact, when DH and I were journaling previously, we started our "day" with dinner. That way we knew we would need points for breakfast and lunch and those meals were easier for us to go lower (high fiber cereals, fruit, salads, etc). I think I may do that again.

I get a major sweet tooth at night. It isn't nutritious but I find freezing Cool Whip Free and eating a couple of spoonfulls makes me think I am getting ice cream. Last night I had it mixed with sliced peaches and it was really good. It isn't Ben and Jerry's but at zero fat, it isn't bad.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on the night time eating. I am going to set aside some food for the evening -- probably just wait to have some fruit later.
Greysangel -- I will definitely space dinner and desser a bit more --- even if dessert is a 40 cal fudge pop!).
Have a good weekend everyone!

One of my favorite after-dinner treats when I am having a sweets craving is a cup of fresh mixed berries layered with 1/4 cup of Cool Whip Lite. YUM. Only 2 points for a very filling snack, and I never feel bad about going over points for fruit. My best friend does something similar, but with a banana, some Cool Whip Lite, and a squirt of Hershey's chocolate syrup.

I do eat a wide variety of foods, but I do worry that I'm not keeping accurate track. Sparkpeople is good, and better than nothing, but sometimes I have to guess at the calories. I don't find as much "regular" food on Sparkpeople, but they do have a lot of restaurant foods and pre-packaged foods. I do weigh and measure everything, though. I just feel better doing it. I think to see faster results, I will need to reduce my calories more. I'm also trying to kick up the workouts, but hip bursitis is making it tough some days. Although the scale hasn't moved, I feel really good, and ultimately, that's my goal.
For the evening eating, it may seem counter-intuitive, but eating a good balance during the day really seems to curb a lot of my afternoon/evening snacking urges. The first time I lost weight on WW, I used to eat as little as possible during the day, saving it up for the evening when DH was home and when I really cooked. I had more mood swings, less energy, and more cravings when I did that. Now I make sure I have a substantial breakfast with protein, whole grain, and fruit, amid-morning piece of fruit, a lunch with protein, carbs, and veggies, and then I also eat a mini-meal around 4:30 since we don't eat dinner until 7:00 or so. After dinner (like around 9:00) I have one Dove dark chocolate square, which I eat really slowly.

JeAnne, I'm struggling with going full fledged back on 6WBMO. I know how much discipline and commitment it takes and am not sure if I'm there right now. I'm leaning toward a modified version so that I can do yogurt and cottage cheese as snacks. It worked so well for me though that I'm realy torn!

OK y'all, I just have to vent for a second, so pass by if you're not in the mood :o :
My skinny sister recently joined WW with me- she's already in the healthy weight zone but wanted to lose 8#. I know those last few can be hard and all, so anyway along we went. Of course, she lost almost five in the first two weeks (typical, I guess) and now she's on week three. I'm on week nine and starting to plateau. I am driving myself crazy comparing myself to her (nothing new) and it is sabotaging me! I know she's not sabotaging me, that I'm doing it to myself, but it is definitely interfering with the healthy outlook about it all that I had before she got on the bandwagon. Help!
Yesterday at a graduation party she brought me some jeans that "don't fit her right" (read size 8 instead of her now size 4). She gave me her fat jeans at a party! Honestly she is really one of the nicest people I know so I don't think she was trying to be mean but it really hurt my feelings. And now I'm crazy obsessing over the whole thing instead of working  . Any advice welcome.

First of all, it sounds as though you have all the tools to combat this. :) You're pretty sure she wasn't trying to be mean, she was just thoughtless... So, if you have that good of a relationship, call her and tell her (calmly) that what she did hurt your feelings. Even though she didn't say that they were too big for her, just that they didn't fit her right. That sounds like, "When you did this, I felt that" -- not "you made me feel...." Important distinction. Forgive me if you already knew how to do that, but most people don't, in my experience...
Secondly, after you do that, and she apologizes (which she will, if she's as nice as you say), you will stop obsessing, because she's taken the hurt away. ;)
You know better than to compare weight loss, even between sisters, because we are all different! You two could be eating the exact things, and have different losses because of metabolism, medical conditions, environmental conditions, etc... It's the luck of the draw, and you probably drew better at something else! That's the downside of a diet buddy, isn't it...

Melissa - It is IMPOSSIBLE to compare weght loss. I have always been big and DH and I always try to get healthy together. He always ends up losing more, exercising less, and keeps it off easier. I know men lose more, yada yada, everyone's different, yada yada.... but they really are. You are doing a great job and it's important to celebrate YOUR victories.
Speaking of victories, I feel pretty good. I weighed in this morning and lost 4 pounds since last week. I also joined Sparkpeople and got DH to join! He also lost 4 pounds this past week. This morning, I did 35 mins on the treadmill and DS and I took a walk that was about 1.75 miles. This week I pledge to drink my water, document ALL food, and hit the Y 4 times. I also want to walk at least 2 times with Maxwell and one is already done :)
