I have a friend who has stop overs in London and Frankfurt. I've been to London, so put together a list of highlights that are must sees, but haven't been to Frankfurt. Anything you would recommend that is not-to-be-missed?

Ummmm...my nephew, but I guess that is a highlight that only pertains to my family, eh? ;) :D

Hope you friend has a wonderful trip. I know my nephew loves living there.

Hmm. I've flown to Germany probably 10-15 times--almost all of them in and out of Frankfurt, and I've never seen anything there. I'm always looking forward to my ultimate destination too much to stop and check it out.

However, the FIFA World Cup site has all kinds of great information about the host cities, and Frankfurt is one of them. Here's a link to an article about what to do in 72 hours in Frankfurt. . .

Dee - yeah, I think your nephew might be a must-see for family only, but glad to know he likes it so much. :D

Robyn - thanks for the link -- off to go check it out. :)

DH was stationed just 20 minutes outside from Frankfurt - we loved the Zoo there. But to be honest, both of us can't think of any "must see" places in Frankfurt :o

It's a little bit of a drive, but a trip to Heidelberg is nice. There are several tour operators that can take you there if you're not up to driving yourself. I don't know if the train runs there or not.

I agree that Frankfurt isn't the most interesting city--its very cold and industrial in my opinion, but there is one area of the city that wasn't bombed during WWII that kept the historical character. I can't think of the name offhand, but every guidebook mentions it.

Ah, Heidelberg... I do miss it. The train does run there, it's about a 45 minute ride, and it is direct from Hauptbahnhof to Hauptbahnhof (main stations). I think it's about 25 Euros one way (at least it was in April when I was there!).

Anyways, Frankfurt. How long will she be there? What is she interested in? The stock exchange is there, and I found that interesting. There is a wonderful Modern Art Museum (http://www.mmk-frankfurt.de/) that is amazing - they had one of the eeriest pieces (eery in a good way) when I was there by a woman named Katharina Fritsch, and this dark room with lights and voices... anyways, amazing. Goethe-Haus (http://www.goethehaus-frankfurt.de/) is neat if she has an interest in literature at all. Goethe is the German equivilant of Shakespeare, and he was born here. City hall (the Roemer) is beautiful, as is the Paulskirche. As was stated earlier, the soccer World Cup is being held in Germany, and there are a lot of events centred on it right now!

Oh, and there are those that consider the Frankfurt airport (and indeed, FRA in general) to be the 9th level of he!!. I think these people have just had unlucky experiences. ;)

Bethany - he'll be there only 2 days with his 14-year-old son. Not sure how much history they're interested in, so I've been pulling together a list of varied stuff - London was a lot easier! :D

Ok, still during the World Cup, but the games in FRA will be done. Still, here are a list of things revolving around soccer (sorry, this is the ONLY event in Germany this summer - it's complete madness) that will be going on, and will likely be suitable for a 14 year old boy. Link! (http://www.wm-frankfurt-2006.de/main.php?bereich=veranstaltungen&content_id=50) In Germany the dates are Day.Month.Year. :)

It's the only thing going in in EUROPE right now, LOL...it's EVERYWHERE. And when you only have 6 TV channels, it SUCKS when 2 of them are showing "football" all the time. Unless you're a fan, of course, in which case you are in heaven. ;)

I'd be torn right now between the Stanley Cup finals and the World Cup (I abbreviated it WC, but it's just not right. I'll go with WM from now on). Not that I'd get the NHL in Europe, but still... As a German teacher, my final geography projects centred around the WM - each kid had to pick a WM city. I was in Berlin and Frankfurt in April and even back then it was craziness!
