Nothing important, just an observation.....

This "Three Marlenas" song had me quite befuddled at the Y the other day. I couldn't get the similarity of sound out of my head, but I was pretty sure it wasn't Bruce.

Even the keyboards sound a bit Dan Federici like!

Here's a clip from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001Y1N/103-6996006-0863806?v=glance&n=5174

Anyone heard any of the Pete Seger stuff? I haven't. I'm very curious.

I'm not a Bruce Springsteen fan (I'm also not anti-Bruce--just no strong opinion one way or the other), but the Pete Seeger sessions absolutely blew me away. My daughters and I have listened to the CD nonstop since I bought it last month. Musically, I've never heard anything quite like it. The energy among the musicians is amazing. Who would have thought there was any life left to breathe into John Henry, or Ol' Dan Tucker?

Absolutely amazing.

I'm really enjoying the Seeger Sessions CD. It's a mixture of folk, gospel, and dixieland in various patterns. Halfway through my first listen, I was hooked. I love Pay Me My Money Down, Mary Don't You Weep, and Jacob's Ladder.

In the liner notes, Bruce says that he tried to get across the feel of a bunch of musicians sitting around playing together for fun and I think it works. You can hear him prompting key changes and solos from the horn section, etc.

The CD has a "making of" DVD on the flip side. Very cool.

Bruce and the Seeger Sessions Band are touring the country, but unfortunately I was out of town when they were here. :(

This is exactly how I feel, Robyn. I listened to it for the first time on Saturday, and loved it. And I'm very much not a Springsteen fan.

What I really loved is that it was recorded live.

Alysha - I really think Jakob Dylan's voice sounds similar to Springsteen's. That might be blasphemy to either side - it's just my opinion. :)

They ARE similar. I don't know Jakob Dylan, so I don't have any opinion there. ;)

I'm so glad to hear good things. I'll have to get out there and actually BUY it. :)

I'm a major Springsteen fan and was not blown away by the Seegar songs -- Lest I be accused of only liking the accessible stuff, I thought Devils and Dust was magnificent.

I grew up on folk music as my parents are/were old Lefties -- nothing wrong with the stuff but I didn't think Springsteen really added much to it beyond performing it.

My personal opinion is that he honors Seegar by his own stuff in which he comments on the human and political condition rather than interpreting old chestnuts with no particular significance -- I would rather listen to the source material personally.

Jakob Dylan is Bob Dylan's son. :) And I love the Wallflowers album - just copied into iTunes yesterday actually!

Need to find this new Bruce project. I *am* a fan, but mainly of his lesser known stuff (not the stuff that hit the Top 40 airwaves).

Bethany - I'll bring it to your house on Wednesday, but you'll have to burn it while I'm there - I'll have to take it back with me. :)

Well isn't that interesting, considering Bob Dylan was such a huge influence on Bruce!

DH and I were talking about how the stuff that usually made the airwaves was usually not his best. Like Dancing in the Dark. Kind of fun, but pure fluff and quite mediocre. Not the real Bruce at all. From what I can remember, the only one that made the radio I really love is Born to Run.

I, however, have a hard time listening to his really raw stuff like the Nebraska album. Just too sparse for me.

I had the good fortune to see the "Seeger Sessions" live on Sunday. The
performance was great. There was an incredible amount of energy in the arena and Bruce and the other musicians were dynamic. He started over an hour late :( but once he got going they played for more than 2 1/2 hours straight.

I particularily liked the "New Orleans" feel to the music. He was backed by a great brass section with a trumpet, sax, tuba, trombone as well some great fiddle players and many more.

I would strongly recommend the live show if you like the cd. Bruce and the band were having a lot of fun and so did we!

Not a Bruce fan, but I moused over the thread and saw the "Three Marlenas" reference, so opened the thread. I love The Wallflowers - Bringing Down the Horse is one of my all-time fav albums. :)

I've been a Bruce fan for ages (Born to Run is one of my top fave albums) but listening to this cd was like running fingernails across a blackboard to me. I do not enjoy country, folk, bluegrass music and these songs were saturated with all of the sounds that I don't like! I took it to a cd-exchange place for credit toward a future purchase. Something that is a bit more "rock-ey"! I wish I had known what kind of music was on this cd before I bought it. Actually, had I thought to stop and think, the title would have been a tipoff.

I saw Bruce and Pete Seeger play together a few years ago at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museaum doing a tribute to Woodie Guthrie. Loved that show, love the new album. (bought it the day it came out) And would dearly love to go to his show here tomorrow night. Don't see it happening though.

I agree with Rhi-Anon. Nails on a blackboard! I was up early this morning. The first song on the radio station I was listening to after the 6am news was one from the new Bruce cd. Forty minutes later, yet another. Sometimes I can deal with that style of music, but not so early in the morning! I put on my new Cat Power cd ;)
