I'm jealous of some of the friendships I've heard about on this bulletin board, and I'm thinking that after 391 posts, I should know some of you guys better!!
So I thought the best way for that to happen is to officially introduce myself and hopefully you guys will do the same.
My real name is Elizabeth, I'm 26, have been married almost two years to a fabulous guy who I'm crazy about. We met in college at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill..go Tarheels!! We aren't quite ready for children yet, but we're talking about talking about them. Are you ever really ready?
We're currently living in San Diego, CA, where we've been since the end of February. It's an fabulous place and we'd like to stay here a while. Before my husband and I got married we did that traveling Monday through Friday thing for 3 years as he is a computer consultant.. so he'd get on a plane on Sunday night and come back on Friday. That got old (long before we put an end to it) so for the past 2 years I've traveled with him and we've lived in NYC, N. VA, Dallas, TX, and now California. It's a great adventure. We'd eventually like to settle down and buy a house, but right now this works for us.
So I am not working...I volunteer, and of course cook and read a lot. I've started an online book club that's reading the Modern Library's 100 Greatest Novel of the 20th Century. My DH and I are taking sailing lessons and I just passed my first level of certification! Yippee!
So that's about all I can possibly think you might like to know about me, just thought I'd introduce myself. I hope this helps me get to know you all better. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hi Elizabeth, how is the weather in California? It is nice to get to know you.
My name is Sara, and I'm pretty new to the boards. I've never been to California, maybe I can live vicariously through you. I live in central Illinois, and I'm a college senior, double majoring in dietetics and kinesiology. Right now I'm in the middle of doing chemistry problems. But I keep getting distracted. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I'm not married, but I'm pretty close with my parents and my brother (who's also in college.) We have a Golden Retriever named Red (clever, huh, hehe) who is almost eight.
I really like to be outdoors. I'm pretty active, and I really like to jog and take nature walks. I also like to write poetry, and I play the piano. I purchased a Fender about two months ago, and am trying to teach myself how to play the guitar. If any of you guys can help me, that would be great. Progress is kind of slow. hehe And I like to cook, of course. My biggest cooking excitement here lately was discovering pearl onions. Yum! But there's lots of foods that I haven't cooked with yet, and I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you.
Sara
ps One of my dreams is to get on the show "Food Fantasy" on the Food Network. Maybe someday.....

Hey, Laughs...
I have no idea what it takes to be a part of the "in crowd" on this BB... but....
I've posted what I think is an abundant number of posts... yet...a few lovely people have personally communicated with me which has been nice...
Sooo... I want to say, hello, I love to read, and have sailed a TON... even though I currently don't actively sail. (I'm old, like 42)...
Nice to meet you....I love your name, and wish you the best with sailing and children... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
and I'd like to be your friend...

So glad you introduced yourself! Since I've found it necessary to broadcast all sorts of personal information across this board already, I don't really think it's necessary to sum it all up right now http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
But I just wanted to say, "Go, Heels!" I graduated in 2000, and I truly miss it -- what an awesome place to go to school. Anyway, I always enjoy your posts, and I'm glad you're here! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

If the search was working, I would include a link of other introduction threads so you could read about the old folk, but its not...
But, Im Kim. I live in Houston by way of IN, NC(Charlotte), and TN. I am a teacher, foodie, and BB junkie. I am very jea;ous of you because although I love HOuston, I would love to continue to move around and eventually live in lots of major cities http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hi Elizabeth - as a Michigan resident I am jealous of your consistently warm weather! I am a 40 yo mom at home with two boys, love to cook, read, and play with my yorkie. I am attending the local university part time to become a teacher. I recently joined the board and have been having a ball reading everyone's posts. Hopefully now when we see each other's names we'll say HI! Debie

Hi Elizabeth,
I like this post! I'm relatively new to this board (a couple of months) but I just love it. I live in Massachusettes, have my whole life. I've been to California a lot for work (Orange county), it's a beautiful place.
Today is my 40th birthday. I know it's just a number, but I'm having a problem with the fact that I always held that number as a time when I would have life all figured out, and I certainly don't. My husband and I have been married for 6 years, we have no kids (looks like we won't) and I don't know many people without children (if any of you are in this boat, I'd really love to hear from you). However, I'm madly in love with him, so I have to keep looking at that!
Where do you volunteer? Congrats on your sailing certification!
Well, that's enough of my story for now - I can't wait to read more...

Go Heels! I graduated in 1995 http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif...now I'm back in RI (where I grew up) after a post-college stint in the DC area, where I met my husband. We've been married a year, just bought a house and I'm not quite ready for kids. I'm a systems person (like your husband) and also got sick of travelling after 8 months of Sun-Thur from DC to Phoenix so now I work in systems at Brown University. I love working at a university!
Looking forward to getting to know you (& everyone) better. Emilycat- I'm with you- I just put my personal stuff out there too! Now, if I only could figure out how to edit my profile, I'd add more info (like my e-mail address)- I didn't know when I set it up that I'd be so willing to share it with you nice folks!
Take good care...

Thanks Elizabeth! Thanks for the intro.
I am new to the BB and find myself addicted. I'm 32 (on Sunday) and grew up in the east, went to College in the east and ran away to Colorado 8 years ago.
I now live in Western Colorado with my DH who is absolelty wonderful. I have two young boys - who are fun and challenging. I am a stay at home mom and love it! If anyone wants a great place to visit - this in one of those!
If I had more free time I would bike (both road and mountain), read, cook, travel, hike, etc...
I starting doing alot of cooking about 6 years ago - I love it and find it as my creative outlet. I am one of those moms that make two different meals. One for me and my dh and one for my sons. My sons are picky eaters and I don't have the heart to fight at dinner time.
Elizabeth - I would love to know more about your on-line book club!!!
Thanks again to you all!

Melissa, just click on "profile" at the top right of the screen. You'll need your password, and then you can modify your profile to include your email address.
Well, laughs, I'm another Julie. Originally from Virginia, I live in Fort Lauderdale aboard a sailboat with my DH. He has a child from a previous marriage and I have none and plan to stay that way. We produce television commercials and websites.

Hi Elizabeth,
It always helps me get to "know" someone when I have a name name to think of (such as "Elizabeth") rather than just a username (not that I don't like your cute username). So - glad to meet you! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
As you may have oh-so-cleverly guessed from my username, my name is Natasha. I have been posting on this board (and its predecessor) for maybe 1 1/2 years now and have encountered some wonderful people on it. A lot has changed during that time, especially in the way of sheer volume on the board! I don't "play" much on the board these days, but am here from time to time...
Anyway, here's my belated welcome. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Go forth and cook something scrumptious.

Hi Elizabeth! I'm an 'official' Elizabeth too--but most everyone calls me Beth. I am 25, working full-time and in school at night, engaged to a super guy and getting married at the end of July, and living in Indianapolis.
I actually think I saw your Top 100 books online club and might have even joined it about a year ago (before I went back to school-- and forfeited most of my free time!) Very interesting. What number are you on right now? Maybe I can join up again as a part-time member during my 5 week break from school in a month!? Reading is one of my very favorite past times.
I'm looking forward to hearing more from you! You sound like a very interesting person. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hello Elizabeth,
I too am married, 10 years now to a wonderful man. Hey, he HAS to be wonderful to stay married to an anal female like me!!
But....my "real" name is Tami, I am 33 and I live in Northern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania....a cooks dream! I was never much of a meat eater as a kid, and naturally hubbie is a true carnivour, but Lan. Co is full of everything a meat lover could ever want. I have actually eaten sausage and liked it here!!
Although I purchase most of my fresh veggies from local Amish/Mennonite farms, I have a few in the back yard. Just a little garden which I love! Loads of herbs though.
I have two children, my son will be 9 this summer and is going into 3rd Grade and my daughter is 5 and excited to be starting Kindergarten soon. We also have two cats, both Chocolate Siamese, named Snickers and Siamen.
I am trained as a Chef (graduated in 95 from IUP's Academy of Cul. Arts), but I have specialized in Pastry. I gave up my job three years ago when we moved here to be a Stay-at-Home-Mom and I do love it!! To keep myself busy I develop recipes, I have learned to preserve/can, I help out at a baking/cooking website called www.baking911.com (http://www.baking911.com) and soon to be www.cooking911.com (http://www.cooking911.com) , and I run my own kitchen hotline email at kitchenhelp@mail.com
Naturally, I read, I sew and do several different antique needleworks, and crochet. I have been on an afgan kick this winter! I made 4 full sized afgans over the winter, and I am working on a few lap sized ones to sell.
I too, have heard from several people from the various boards that I post at, and am welcome to anyone emailing me!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
It's great to meet you! Happy Cooking!!

Don't feel bad, Elizabeth...I've never been part of any in-crowd my entire life! Your online book club sounds really fun...now if I only had time to read! One of my goals when my kids get a little older is to join a book club.
My name is Christine (Chrisi) and I'm a 32 year old SAHM. Suziking...It sounds like we have a lot in common! I've been married for 8 years in August. We have 2 kids, Emily (soon to be 4) and Gabe (8 months). They keep me really busy, and are the reason I feel like there aren't enough hours in the day. There are so many things I love to do, but I just can't find the time right now. I have a home-based business making homemade dog biscuits and doing some crafts. But I can't invest much time in it right now (to my great disappointment). I recently started quilting, and I enjoy reading and cooking, and all kinds of creative-type things.
We live in Minnesota, and have a black lab cross, Casey and 3 cats, Kiki, Emmett, and Elvis.

So glad you posted this topic - I had been thinking the same thing (although I am a relatively new member). My real name is Jennifer and I just turned 30 three weeks ago (yikes!). My husband and have have no children but we have a cute dog named Brittany and a spitfire cat named Ember. I am an art director for an ad agency but have recently been thinking about starting my own business designing paper and stickers for scrapbooking. I love scrapbooking and cooking of course. Outdoor adventures are a big part of our life living in beautiful Portland OR. I look forward to being a friend to you all!

Hey Elizabeth-
I'm one of the lurkers. I get on the BB almost every day but don't often post (thus the continuing junior member status).
I'm an (almost) 40 divorced mom with three daughters (13, 11 and 8). We live in St. Louis. I'm a major fan of professional sports and music of all kinds (although jazz and blues are my favorite), cycling, and an avid reader. Lawyer by trade, I identify more strongly with the female character in "Rose is Rose" who occasionally transforms from an average mom into a motorcycle babe when certain events trigger that rebel mode.
I take so much away from this BB --info, insight into the various participants' personalities and the goodwill they share, and especially the joy in a mutual love of food and cooking from this group, I know that I should contribute more. Perhaps your post will inspire me to get with it!!

I'm glad you posted this topic too, Elizabeth!
My name is Rindi and I'm 28 years old and live in Bethesda, MD, near Washington, DC. I live with my incredible boyfriend and we have a dog (Philly, named for the city where my boyfriend is from) and a cat (Pongo, no special reason for this name). I like to run and bike and I'm trying to get better at golf. I LOVE movies and my boyfriend and I have around 650 of them (almost all came from him....great perk to living with him!). I'm not working right now cause I got laid off but I'm diligently looking and will hopefully be back to work very soon.
It's great to meet all of you! I love this BB! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Welcome to everyone!
Well, I've posted this once before, but it's great to meet new people so here I am again http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I'm Julie, 31 (32 rapidly approaching), married nearly 9 years to an incredible guy who is a junior high/high school History and French teacher (he's a farmer at heart!) He's starting graduate school in the Fall and will continue to substitute teach.
We're both natives of Washington State, but our married life- until we returned to the Northwest last summer- has been spent in Africa, Colorado, Ohio, and Illinois. We've been chasing careers, grad school, until we realized that we belonged at home. The travel bug bit us early- we've both lived in France (at different times- we met in a French class in college), I've also lived in Japan (teaching English), and we went as newlyweds to Chad, Africa to become Peace Corps Volunteers. The love of our life is our mutt, Lucy, the world's most adorable dog.
I'm thrilled that we've been able to do so many wonderful things, and to have lived away (far away!) from home- I'm truly ready to settle down, so we're back in Washington State to stay. We're hoping to start a family very soon.
I telecommute from home- I work for a U.S. university based in London- and I travel about 7-10 days/month visiting our affiliate universities in the Southwest and West Coast who send students to our university on a short-term basis. Heck of a lot of fun!
My passions are the out-of-doors, writing, music, reading, cooking, learning-trying new things, constantly challenging myself, being in my 30s, languages, and most recently, this BB!

Hiya Jacque - I'm a big big jazz and blues fan too - not too many of us around, unless they're just keeping quiet!
I posted on the very first string way back in November, but I'll do it again. I'm 37 years old (38 in October), married to a wonderful guy, celebrating 14 years in July. We live in southeast Michigan. We're childless by choice, but share our home with 2 dogs, Abbie & Bailey (labs). I love to bake, cook (including marinating the chef with wine http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif), garden, travel, going to jazz concerts, and I love this bb.
Take care.

My turn! My name is (duh) Heidi, I am 22 and live in Salt Lake City, Utah. I graduated last April from Brigham Young University in Sociology. I am engaged to a 1st Lieutenant in the Army who just got sent to Saudi Arabia for the next 5 months, so I have lots of free time on my hands right now! I love to scrapbook, bead, read, and have recently started running. I am trying to learn to cook, and if my boss knew how much time I spend on these boards, I'd be fired for sure!
PS--I know some of you are military spouses, or grew up in the military, and I'd love any advice you'd care to give me on that whole subject. The Army is a whole new world for me!

Hello everyone!
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents in too instead of just lurking and taking all of your wonderful recipes!
I am a Jennifer too. 30 years old and I live in New Jersey. I was married last august to a wonderful man (on the eve of my 30th birthday...just got that in under the wire!) and I'm a teacher waiting for my last day of school to end. I love Jazz (though my husband knows so much about music he could write a book!), cross stitch, reading, being outdoors, going to the shore, and spending time with my families - old and new. I love to to cook and my husband loves to eat so we make a good pair. And as for kids, a agree with the first post...are you ever ready?
I have become an addict for this board and access it during my prep (and between classes...and at lunch....) and I wish most that I had a Trader Joe's by me, since you all make it sound like Nirvana!

My name is really Joy (clever disguise, huh?), and I'm 31, although 32 is approaching rapidly.
I live with a black cat named Kissa, who awakens me in the middle of the night begging for food, even though the bowl is already full. She forgets to check first.
I'm divorced, but in love with a wonderful smart man who makes me laugh, and who shares my desire to never ever have children.
I teach 5th grade math, so I'm enjoying summer vacation. I'm busy every summer with intense bouts of sleeping and reading. That, along with checking in at various online BBs, makes for a strenuous couple of months. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Curleytop,
I felt like I was going to be the one married the longest, but you certainly have me beat!!
My name is Alicia, and I've been married (to the same guy) for almost 19 years, and he's still willing to try all of those new recipes. We have two kids--Morgan, who's 7, and Troy, who's 5, and would eat PB&J every day if they had their way, although they are getting much more adventureous. Oh, and we have a new puppy since my husband decided our lives were not complicated enough already.
I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1982 (hence my "screen name"), and I've been working as a chemist for a large, multinational computer company (guess which one??) and living in the Hudson Valley of New York since then. Right now I'm working 3 days a week, which is a perfect balance between doing the things I want to with the kids and also having some adult conversations (not to mention $$$!).
I've always loved to cook, my problem is generally a lack of time.
RobinC
06-20-2001, 10:20 AM
Hi everyone! My name is Robin (kinda obvious http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ) and I am mostly a lurker. I've made enough posts to be a member, but I tend to hang back in the shadows.
I am 30, as is my darling boyfriend, Paul, and I have been living together for 2 years in the Portland, Oregon area, and a couple for 4 years. He is a bit marriage phobic, but we will get there. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif We adore each other and are definitely committed to each other for the "long haul". We first met when we were freshman in college back in 1988 at Oregon State University. We lost touch with each other for a few years, until I found him on the internet back in 1996.
My day job is with a Big 5 accounting firm. I am on the road most of the time, but that should end soon. The one plus side is that with all the "prize points" I've accumulated on my corporate credit card I should be able to get myself a set of All-Clad cookware about the time I get off the road.
Paul and I also run a web server and a business out of our home selling circuit boards that Paul designed and some electronic components that support his projects.
When I am home and not working on electronics assembly or figuring out what the devil by DB has done with our company accounting while I've been away http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif, I try to cook as much as I can. I recently saw a dietition to help me with some lifestyle changes. I am trying to cook more fish, much to my DB's delight. I'm a novice at cooking seafood, but my recent atempts have been pretty successful.
I really enjoy reading all the getting to know you posts. I think it is good to do this every now and then, even if there are previous threads. New BB fans and lurkers need chances to introduce themselves. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

06-20-2001, 10:40 AM
I remember reading some of the earlier "get-to-know-you" threads, but can't remember if I've ever posted anything about myself! So, here goes...
I'm 29, originally from CA but live in upstate NY, and work for a science museum developing exhibits and programs for children and families. My background is in developmental psychology.
I live with my fiance and my lovely black mutt Gertie. I'm a vegetarian; fiance is not. Love to cook, frequent the farmer's market, make lists (see post on "anal things you do" thread), read and travel.
I'm not a big sports person, but this year I joined a summer softball team. First time I ever had a softball glove on my hand! I have no skill whatsoever, but my team is great and supportive. We've won one game this season (they were a "Bad News Bears" type team before I ever joined!). Last night I made it to first base for the first time!

laughsandlaughs- thanks for this post, what a great idea!
Like some of you, I have been lurking here for a few months now, but am puttering along with my junior member status. I read this BB almost every day, and am enthralled by the many things I have learned here! I especially enjoy getting to read about all of you. It makes the BB experience much more personal for me.
My name is Kim and I live in Pittsburgh. I grew up here, but have been away for many years. I moved to Chicago after college and lived there for 5 years with my college roomies and loved every minute of it! I miss Chicago very much.
Then I spent an all-to-brief year in Charleston, SC, where my BF was living at the time. What a wonderful city Charleston is! My BF and I moved back to PA about a year ago.
I was an elementary teacher for 6 years, in both Chicago and in SC. I had a very bad experience in my last year of teaching, and found myself really needing a break from it. So, for the last year I have been working in the education department of one of the museums here. I am finding that I am missing teaching more and more now that I've had a year off. And my motivation for it has returned and I am in the process of getting back on the education horse!
I enjoy (in addition to cooking, obviously)reading, camping, softball, pottery, and playing trivial pursuit! I am very happy to get to know you all!

Hello, nice to meet you all. I've been coming to this board since about November I think. I'm 24 and I live in Arlington, VA right outside of DC (my boss claims that he can see the Washington Monument from his office window, but I think he lies).
I am working for a non profit while I get my masters in Online Teaching and Learning. Eventually I would like to get a job where I can work from home.
I live with my BF of five years, and I love to cook (obviously) but my kitchen is very small http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif This really limits me in the amount of appliances I have and in the ingredients I can buy.
I also love to travel, read, take long walks, and write.
I really enjoy this board and I have learned so much!

OK, my turn...I'm 38 years old, will be 39 in about 2 weeks. Originally from central California, but made the big move to the Seattle, Washington area nearly nine years ago because I couldn't stand the heat and wanted to 'strike out on my own'. While I was in the middle of striking about 4 years ago I met the most wonderful man in the world through a Personal Ad in the newspaper, and we will be married two years in October. We're childless-by-choice, and our family consists of each other, and two dogs. I adopted a little mutt who had been abused by his former owners from a shelter nearly six years ago that I named Riley. Three months ago we adopted a very neglected Siberian Husky named Sasha from the same shelter. Both of them are our 'children', and we couldn't love them more if they were flesh and blood kids. Well...maybe.
I'm a Project Coordinator for a Food Equipment company, and DH is a Communications Technician for the Associated Press. We plan on retiring in about 15-16 years and trying to move to Monterey, California.
I'm the biggest John Denver fan on the planet, and take lots of guff because of it! Don't care! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif I love 80's music also, but JD has my heart, and has since I was a little runt of 7 years old.
We love antiquing, road trips, cooking and bicycling. More than anything, we enjoy just thanking our Guardian Angels that we found each other! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Hi Guys!
My name is Julia. I’m 25 and just got married in April (if anyone is interested, there are 2 pictures of our wedding on the We’re Cooking Now site) to a great 26 year-old named Vitaly. We live in Los Angeles, CA (actually West Hills, if anyone knows where that is). From the time I was 5 (I was born in the Ukraine) I lived in San Francisco (amazing city). I graduated from the University of San Francisco. I went in Public Accounting (RobinC – I was at D&T) after college and stayed there until February of this year, when I joined Disney. I moved from SF to LA in 1998 (staying with D&T) to be with Vitaly (it had been a long distance relationship).
We bought a house in September of 2000, and of course we are still remodeling (doing everything ourselves). We collect wine – we go up to Napa at least 6 times a year (we visit my folks in SF about 1/month). We love to eat, but don’t eat out for dinner very often, as we both work pretty late. When I get home at a decent hour, I love to cook (it’s healthier and less time consuming then going out), but for the last 2 nights in a row, I’ve picked up El Polo Loco on my way home.
We don’t have kids yet, but probably will within the next year or two.
Elizabeth – thanks for starting this post, as I was starting to feel the same way as you (about the friendships).

Hi everyone-
My name is Melissa. I just turned 29 earlier this month. I still can't believe this is the last year of my twenties. I am definately going to make it a memorable one. I have lived in Atlanta, GA for 5 years. I moved from a smaller town in south Ga. called Albany where my parents live, went to college in Americus, GA. I work in accounting but am looking into a career change. I am single, but have been dating a terrific man for 1 and 1/2 yrs. who is several years my senior. We have a great time together. We just got back from a week down in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. It was so relaxing. We both scuba dive so we did some diving while we were there. Any scuba divers on the board???? We don't have children and don't plan too. It is nice to meet some other people on the board who don't have plans for children either. My S.O. and I find it hard to meet people who don't already have children. I do have a persian cat though, who's name is Snow. (guess what color he is) It is nice to meet you all.

Curleytop - Totally inspirational
Jacque - I can relate to the average mom into motorcycle babe. There is nothing like it! SO and I go riding as much as we can.
Hi everyone,
My name is Karen. I am 39 and have a son 17 and a daughter 15. SO, DS and I live in Bristol, CT. (DD decided to live with her dad, sigh). SO doesn't have children and has assured me mine are enough. Thank goodness, I don't think I could go another round.
I work for a construction company and for lack of a title...I am the office. I work alone or with the owner. I really like my job.
Aside from occasionally being a biker chick, I like cooking, running, cycling, inlining.
I really like reading about everyone. Thanks Laughsandlaughs!

This post is getting long, but what the heck. I'm also a newbie to the BB (just a few months) and love to read about the mix of members we've got here.
I'm Susan, just turned 35, married 4 1/2 years to the most wonderful DH named Scott.
I'm glad to see so many folks on the BB who like to move around. We just moved to Madison, WI (after also living in Colorado and N. California twice) and I just love getting to experience new cultures, people, etc.
We're childree by choice (looks like there's several of us out there), but are diligently raising (and spoiling) our 14-year-old orange tabby (Jake) and 5-year-old German Sheperd (Ki).
I'm a high tech marketing consultant and just began working from home. I love it so far. Still the same fun work, but no office politics and I can set my own hours.
We love to run, bike, backpack, canoe, sail and remodel our new home. I'm getting into gardening (which is new to me). And we just started a French class at UW (KValley -- I will need tips from you!) We also love cooking, especially baking, and are wine enthusiasts. (and of course, I"m addicted to this BB!)
I can't remember if I have ever introduced myself or not...
My "real" name is Mary. I live on the Central Coast of Ca. (laughs-it's nice to see another Californian on the board-seems like there aren't too many of us!)
I am married, 40 years young, and childless by choice. (JulieA it sounds like you are going through something I went through a while back...I would love to "talk" about it if you want to). I have an adorable husband who is truly a child at heart, two fussy cats, an insane parrot, two snakes and a tarantula (see what I mean by a child at heart? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif )
I live way out in the country, and am fortunate to not have to work away from home. I enjoy reading, cooking, wine tasting,
travel, and music. Most of my time is spent working in our garden. We grow almost all of our own vegetables, numerous herbs, and lots of flowers. It is fun, and lots of hard work.
I enjoy this BB. Especially reviews of recipes, and cooking questions. I have been with CL mag since '93, and would say that most of what I cook is light.
It's nice to meet you!
I think I may have posted on another thread but I can't remember. My name is Heather and I'm 31 years old. I live in California in the Bay Area. I was actually born and raised here in California. I lived in Merced prior to moving here to San Jose. Ah, how I miss the small town life. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I've been married for almost 8 years now. Our anniversary is at the end of July. My husband has two kids from a previous marriage but we're not planning on having any together. It's nice to hear of other couples making that choice as well. I can't tell you how many times people ask me why we're not having children. I guess they think that when you get married it's logical to have children. My husband is 9 years older than I am so his children are almost 21 and 19. Our "kids" are our two kitties; Dougie and Cleo.
I enjoy reading, cooking, walking and movies. Over all, I enjoy spending time with my husband. He's quite a sweetie!
I go through spurts on this board. A lot of times I'm a lurker as I enjoy reading everyone elses posts. Other times, I feel I have something of value to add so I'll chime in. I do enjoy reading posts such as these. It's a neat way to get to know people. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
It's great to meet you Elizabeth and everyone else!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hi Elizabeth and everyone!
I am a native Californian, and live in Orange County (for those of you that don't know, it is half way between LA & San Diego) am 41 but consider myself to be a youthful 41! My family is originally from Chicago and moved here 4 years before I was born.
I work in personnel in an academic department at a local university. For the most part, it is a good working environment but it can get crazy at times.
I have never been married but have had a couple of close calls. My "child" is an adorable cockatiel named Cordell who is spoiled rotten! I am currently dating a wonderful man named Mark who lives on a sailboat- he knows how to sail but we have discussed taking a class together. Congrats to those of you who have completed your training!
Mark and I originally met when I was 15 and he was 17. We had found each other to be cute but were afraid to approach each other. Two years ago, we went out with mutual friends to a concert and have been together ever since. We only get together on weekends and we really like it that way! That could be one of the reasons that we get along so well.
We have lots of fun cooking (the downside is that we have both put on weight since we have been together:eek http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif and going out with friends.
In addition to cooking, I like to travel, go on roadtrips, reading (especially cookbooks), movies, antique shopping, hiking and walking. Elizabeth, enjoy San Diego, it is wonderful! I'd move there in a heartbeat! In fact, trips to the zoo and wild animal park are in order very soon!
Curleytop, may I also say that you rock!!

Oh Julia, please tell me more - my father's side of the family is from the Ukraine's and I would love to know more about it. One of my Dad's dreams was to go to the Ukraine and find "lost" family members. If you are willing, I would love to know anything that you could tell me. I know that I could read books about it, but... well, I just think it's best to hear about it from someone who has personal knowledge.
And as to the topic, well, I'm Cheryl, I'm going to be 38 this year. I've been married for 10 years and we have no (human) children. I am in the midst of moving across the state (from Grand Rapids to Waterford Township, Michigan), changing jobs, and FINALLY being back with DH "full time".

Hi my name is Matt Stewart. I live in Miami, where it is 99%of the time hot. I am currently a college student. I decided to go back and do something better with my life. I enjoy cooking immensely, my head is constantly reeling on what i can make for my roommates or myself. I have enjoyed the people i have met through the BB. One of the coolest things I have ever done is actually two things gone to see Hisholiness the Dalia Lama and Made the Communion bread for a church group several times. To this day i still get goosebumps thinking about it. I enjoy reading, lectures, cooking, baking and most of all I enjoy school alot.
Hello to all! I've been posting since last year. I look forward to this bb everyday.
My name is Jean, I'm 51 years old and have a wonderful life! I live in Wichita, Kansas.
DH & I married 9 years ago...have a combined family of 5 kids (4 boys and 1 girl)...I consider his 3 boys mine/we all get along great. Needless to say we have large family gatherings as only one of the kids is not married. We have 5 of the most perfect, smart, gorgeous grandchildren.
DH has ridden motorcycles since he was a boy so...we toured Europe on a motorcycle for our honeymoon...the best way to see the Alps.
He has his private pilots license (5 years now) so we get to take some nice trips and extended weekends. Guess it goes without saying...we like to travel.
One of my most prized accomplishments is getting scuba certified when I was 50 years old. DH & I were going to Grand Caymon Island so it just seemed a natural thing to do (in the most UNNATURAL place Kansas!)
I'm an office manager for 2 great attorneys. I think I have the worlds best job.
It is so good to meet all of you!!!!!

Hi Everyone! I have been lurking around here the last few weeks rather than posting much do due a busier schedule!
As you can tell by my username, I am Patsy - I am 30, but will be 31 this Sunday. I am originally from Kansas City, MO... but, now live in Northern NJ with my dh. We have been married 4 1/2 years and just found out we are going to have our first baby in February! We are so excited.
I love cooking, but lately haven't felt much like experimenting due to being very tired and sick - fortunately, dh is very good about cooking when I don't feel like it. I also love taking pictures and going to the shore on the weekends.
I have really learned a lot from this board and plan to post more once I finish up some on-line courses that I am taking! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

What the heck! I too am a "lurker" of sorts but really enjoy this board! My real name is Laurie, I just turned 30 in May and recently married to a great guy this past February. I'm an Exercise Physiologist and will be returning to school this fall to persue my masters in nutrition. Someday I hope to lose my junior status!

Hi Everyone!
I, also, am of the lurker persuasion. I love reading all the posts and have gotten to know some of the names well. It's great to put some bios with them! What an interesting, well-rounded group.
I am 30 (as of 2 months ago and STILL not taking it well). I live in Gilbert, AZ -- it hasn't gone under 105 in weeks! I would LOVE to live in San Fran. I have lived with my SO for over 11 years...just can't seem to eke that piece of paper out of him. Oh, well. If it ain't broke... We have 2 wonderful "children", Stinky and Harley, a basenji and a basenji-jack russel mix respectively. They are our BABIES and they sure do know it. We spoil them so!
I've always loved to cook, especially bake, but took up with cooking light (and Cooking Light) last year when I decided d*** if I'm not going to go into my 30s fat! So, I took control, joined Weight Watchers, started cooking from CL, light cookbooks, and from this BB (you guys are amazing!). I had lost 33 pounds by Dec. and have kept it off since. (I'm only 5'2" so 33 pounds was A LOT!)
I'm so jealous of everyone who stays at home, either to raise their family and/or work from home. Someday...
We do plan to start a family someday. Just trying to get into a better financial / professional position. (That won't ever happen, huh?)
Well, look at me just babbling. It's so exciting to finally "meet" you all!

Hi Everyone! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I'm Amanda, I am 25, been married for 2 years to a WONDERFUL man. I am originaly from the Dallas area. I am now living in Brisbane, Australia and will be here for the next year. We absolutely love it here! I love exploring, and being out doors, cooking, music, theatre, and movies. No children, yet. I want a dog really bad, but we live in an apartment, and they won't allow dogs. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
I love this BB. I always find it not only fun and uplifting, but very educational. I have tried so many new things thanks to the people here. And, I am even getting inspired to want to be a runner!
Laughs, thanks for the post!

I'm Andrea, 31, married for almost 7 years. 2 dogs (Tupper & Colby), no kids yet. I'm originally from Buffalo, NY and now living about 60 miles north of New York City. DH & I met in college (RIT in Rochester, NY). We're currently in the process of selling our house and buying a new-to-us house about 2 blocks away- it's bigger & completely renovated. And it has a deck, so I'm really looking forward to outdoor entertaining (with help from you all & CL!!) This year I've been filling in for a 5th grade teacher who went out on maternity leave after Thanksgiving... and I just found out I'll be returning next fall to fill another 5th grade position!! Over the summer, I'll be teaching archery & rock climbing at a day camp. In my spare time (yeah, right!), DH & I love to kayak and hike with the dogs.
Welcome to all new members and thank you to everyone who has ever given me any kind of advice/suggestion in the past year or so. This BB is a wonderful resource (and a major addiction!!). http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

O.K. I tried posting and I think my message just got devoured by a computer gremlin, so here goes again. Hi, I'm Karen. I am a 36 y.o. SAHM of three beautiful children(no biases there, of course)-ages 5,4,and almost 2. My wonderful husband and I moved to Connecticut about 4 years ago where we have built our "dream" home(with a great big kitchen, too!!). I'm originally from Milwaukee, WI. I spent 8 years in Madison, WI for college and Medical school. I am an anesthesiologist, but I have not worked since my last child was born. I met DH in Pittsburgh, PA when we were in our residencies(he's a radiologist), and then we lived in Atlanta for a year(for DH's fellowship at Emory) before settling in CT.(Hey, my kids were each born in a different state-enough moving around already!!).
Anyway, I love to cook and bake(or is this just assumed by being on this BB??), and my husband eats almost anything! We also love the outdoors, taking walks with the kids, traveling, swimming, scuba diving, and reading.
I owe the people on this BB a "thank you" for teaching me so many new things. I always thought I was a decent and knowledgable cook, but I have picked up so much more information from lurking about this board than I imagined I could. And, I have also become a more adventurous eater, which is an accomplishment in itself...because I was one fussy kid. My children are now giving me payback with their fussiness at the table. Oh well....what goes around , comes around!
See you around!

Well - I too can be called a "lurker" although I post when I feel like it. Like my Username - my name is Janet. I'm 27 and from New Jersey. I'm engaged to a great guy and planning an Oct'02 wedding.
I'm in grad school for a finance degree with a public sector focus. I made the change from corporate work about a year ago - and there is no going back. I love non-profit work!
I also love to cook - but only for those who appreciate it (This includes my future husband!). Reading is one of my passions - and I have already entered negotiations with my future DH regarding how many of my books come with me since we will be keeping his place - and he already has loads of books. (Little does he know - THEY ALL COME!) I think he would prefer if I only brought my cookbooks. :-).

Hi Elizabeth,
The good news is, "ask and ye shall receive".
The bad news is, now that we're friends, we're all coming to your place for dinner.
Get ready, there are 52 posts so far.
I'm originally from Brooklyn, New York, and now live in Beverly Hills, California. I ran away from home when I was twenty six. We're Sicilians, and a great family, but if you leave home unmarried, you're automatically a runaway; you could be fifty and it wouldn't matter. I came to California mainly because it was as far away as I could get without falling off the edge of the country. And ever so gradually, every member of my immediate family followed me out. A classic case of the Mohammed/Mountain syndrome.
I'm a stay at home. (Disabled.) I'm not married and never have been. I have a great foster son who now has children of his own.
I worked in the men's garment industry for many years, in many different capacities; go-fer, administration, production, public relations, consulting, merchandising and designing. My last position was the very best; I promoted menswear made in California nationwide, and promoted American made menswear worldwide. I worked with most of our Embassies and Consulates, and twice a year I went to fashion and selling shows in Paris, Italy and Germany. I really got my licks in before the Fates got to shoot me down!
I'm a pet lover too. My Yorkie died a while ago. He was twenty years old, and I haven't had the heart to get another, but I think I'm getting there. I may have to have more surgery and if I do, a little dog is going to be my recovery reward to myself.
I like to read. I love books on tape. They make my life so easy. I like music; mostly classical and jazz. And that I'm a foodie goes without saying.
After you read this thread and get to know some of us, you may want to read some of the threads that will tell you why we're here and why we stay. One poll I liked, was "How has this board helped you?". A more recent one is "How has this BB helped you?", and it's still up on the board.
I've really enjoyed reading this one that you've started. See what you did? You did it to find new friends for yourself and you ended up pulling us all together. Good for you for asking and good for us for not letting the opportunity go by.
Melina
PS: What time should I be there?

Hi Elizabeth,
My name is Hedy, and I'm 30. Grew up in Rockland County, NY and then spent four years of college in Binghamton NY. I met my DH (sorry all you Tarheels, he went to Duke Unviersity!) in optometry school in New York City. We've been married about 3 1/2 years now, and we've been living in central New Jersey(monmouth) for about 1 1/2 years. No kids yet, but thinking about it more lately since we are both now (gasp!) out of our 20's!
I've been lurking for about 2 months now. I enjoy reading all the posts on this BB every day.....it's the first thing I look at when I go online! Me and my husband both work late and eat late so I always am looking for quick, tasty and easy recipe ideas on the BB. I always like the reviews of recipes, and because of this board I've become a convert of Parmigano-reggiano cheese(SP?) and Penzey's Spices. Still have to try that Drunken Goat cheese, though.

Hi. I had posted my info before, but it looks like we have a lot of new people and this new thread, so here goes! I'm Rebecca, 44, married with 2 boys (9 & 7). My DH is 6 years younger http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif and he's an engineer. I'm a professional singer/guitarist (for 26 years) and Pampered Chef Director (been with the company for 5-1/2 years). We live in a suburb outside Philadelphia, where it is quite hot right now. We even made the national news with our recent flooding. Glad to make everyone's aquaintance and share in our mutual love of CL!

Hi all! Wow, what an eclectic (is that spelled right?!?) group we are. I never knew....
Anyhow, my name is Heather. I am 25 and am rapidly approaching my 2nd anniversary to my dh. We live in northern Indiana, but thankfully we can drive to Indy to TJ's!
I teach high school Spanish and coach academic competition teams, which is always a learning experience.
I love to read, cook, and travel. I guess I'm fairly active, from cycling and running, to tae bo and aerobics. Just whatever I find time for. No kids yet, but we are hoping soon...

Laughsandlaughs,
Great idea!
My real name is Wendy. I'm 35, married (usually quite happily), and live in Tucson,Arizona. I teach drama to 8th graders, which is always interesting since teenagers tend to be quite dramatic! I have four loved and pampered cats, including one who is diabetic and requires daily insulin shots.
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and spent my 20s in Grand Rapids, MI. Five years ago, my husband and I left our home, jobs, friends and family and moved to Tucson. We pulled into town without knowing a soul, with no place to live and no jobs. Everyone thought we were crazy, but we are so glad we moved!
We love it here!
We just bought a fixer upper on a gorgous acre lot in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mts. I am the proud owner of the world's ugliest kitchen! I have brown laminate cupboards, an avocado stove and 30 year old wallpaper! When finances permit, I plan on gutting everything and turning it into my dream kitchen.
I have so enjoyed reading about everyone!

This is a great idea!! I see that the thread is getting quite long, but what the heck.....
My name is Amy (what a stretch!!), but my new last initial is C....newly married (in March)....I have been quite the lurker on this board, occasionally putting my .02 in....I am 29 (sometimes I try to convince myself that 30 will never actually arrive!!), and I am a therapist that specializes in crisis intervention. I love my job, but needless to say, it does get stressful....DH is a great support for me on that end.... I live in the suburbs of DC, the "cityfolk" would say I am out in the country but it really isn't that far! I love to cook and ever since DH and I have been living together I have impressed myself with my ability to put meals together...almost everything I have tried from CL has been great!!
It is nice to have you all here...I check in a few times a day and it's like catching up with old friends even though we have never actually met!!! SO thank all of you for that!
Hi everyone.
I'm Pat. I'm 43 years old, married, live in St.Paul Minnesota. I have 4 year old twins, a boy and a girl.
I work as a systems analyst/developer for a large retailer (I've only been there 1 month).
I love to cook, but find with working fulltime, I rely a lot on freezer and make-ahead cooking. I save much of the Cooking Light recipes for the weekend. I get way behind trying all of the recipes I'd like to cook.
It's nice to meet you all.
Pat

Hello!
I'm the one who hasn't posted the peach ice cream recipe yet.
My name is Avril, I'm a lawyer in Canada, ready to go on mat leave (woo hoo!) in 2 weeks. I have 2 ds's and a great dh to go home with every night.
I love to cook, but it has to be fast things for the most part. A 3-year old "helping" is a major challenge to any ambitious cook.
I also love to read (literary fiction) play the piano, listen to music....... These things never happen. I try to cook healthfully, do good work, and spend time with my kids. That and a littlbe bit of sleep generally keep me busy 24/7. (Oh- I watch movies on video 1-2 times a week, my other great interest).
All this said, apparently I will be training for the 1/2 marathon once I recover from child birth. My dh just ran his first 2 weeks ago, and has set the challenge for me to follow. Never having run in my life, and starting with at least 30 extra pounds (Pg cravings are hard to ignore! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif) it will be ambitious.
THanks to all the other posters that have given me so much information and fun over the last few months.
And PS - I think I am now 1 away from being a member!

I'm like a lot of you. I lurk but rarely post. I'm also a Julie, although most of my friends call me Jules. I'm 37, an attorney who gave up life as a litigation attorney to stay home with my 4 year old and my 4 month old twins. After all we went through to get the twins, my dh and I decided it was time to focus on them for a time. I am a bb junkie simply because I love to cook and eat and because this qualifies as my daily dose of adult conversation. ( Can you tell I miss my job!) I love to travel, needlepoint, garden and read. Elizabeth, I am definitely interested in your book club, although I have to resort to reading late at night and while being stopped at long stop lights. I live in Oklahoma but dream of moving to Summit County in Colorado. Meanwhile my dh dreams of moving to Destin Florida. Amazing that we've been married for 13 years as of today!!
Well, since I'm new to the BB I guess I should introduce myself...
My name is Amy and I have lived in Nashville, TN for 2 1/2 years. I graduated from UNC Charlotte in '98 and then met my wonderful HB and moved to Nashville and got married in April of '99. My HB is a pastor on staff at a fairly large church so we stay really busy. We have no children yet but we are planning on having a family before too long.
I love to cook, swim, scrapbook, read and putter in my flowerbeds although my HB tells me I have a "black" thumb.
By the way...when does one finally get rid of the "junior member" status"?

My name is Tania and I am 32 years old. I am a dental hygienist and am currently on maternity leave for a year. Yeah!!!!! I have a daughter, Kate, who is 21 months and a son, Malcolm, who is 4 months. Needless to say I am quite busy. My DH and I have been married for 9 years and travelled quite a bit before we had our 2 little ones. I love to read, draw, cook, camping, and I am trying to learn how to do watercolours. I have two Himalayan cats named Thumper and Kashmir. I live in Toronto,Ontario right now but will soon be moving to Calgary, Alberta. I am a little nervous as family will be even further away from us but it should be a good family move. There will lots of camping and tons of skiing in the rockies. Wish me luck on our move!
