Yesterday, I was talking to a friend, and started to refer to my husband as "DH" to her... she is not even computer literate, and would have had no idea who or what I was talking about! :D :o
What about you -- do you start speaking in BB shorthand?

I don't, but if I have one more student tell me "jk! jk!" (pronounced jay-kay) I'm deducting points from their grade. I'd deduct from their IQ as well if I could. I also get lol (ell-oh-ell) quite a bit.

I was showing my boss Outlook Web Access. Anyway I had to get up to go get the usename/password list. As I stood up I said AFK. Went and got what I needed and my boss is sitting there repeatedly trying to input AFK as the user name and wondering why it won't let him login. :D

I've been online for over 10 years and use computer acronyms in BBs and email ALL THE TIME, but I don't think I've ever spoken one in conversation.

What are "JK" and "AFK"? Can't recall coming across those.
I don't speak in acroynyms, but can't tell you who often "There was a thread on my bulletin board about . . . " or "I was reading the boards and . . ." comes out of my mouth. DD and DH laugh at me, but DD's asked me a few times to ask a question on the boards for her. LOL!

I've never actually SAID it, but have often started typing 'DH' in emails.
I HAVE said "I don't mean to hijack the thread" in which case people either just get what you mean or look at you like you have three heads.
Funny thread!

Thank you, Kay. I believe you just started a BB support group here.
I know I'm spending too much time on the board, things are piling up here at home! This is fun and interesting, so even though I think "I'll just check in for a minute" it turns into an hour!
Or if there is a thread of particular interest, I'll check in throughout the day to see what people have added. I've started to use the word "hijack" in conversation when it flows in another direction. Help me... :D
I had a dream last night that I was typing something on this message board, is that strange or what?

Count me in! This is one support group I'm ready to join. :)
I think I've actually mentioned on other threads how I've started to call my husband "DH" in front of others... and that's just one example.
Much of our dinner conversation often starts "Oh, I read something interesting on the BB today."
And I well know, GingerPow, how "I just want to check something on the BB for a minute" can turn into an hour.
I learn so much fascinating and helpful stuff on this BB, though- it's easy to justify. It's like a very, very, good (interactive) magazine.

Don't you just love "understanding" the kids when they're talking... and then letting them know it! It's kinda like admiring their favorite musical group/singer -- they abandon them immediately! Tee hee! :D

I haven't spoken in BB speak yet, but I think it all the time. I'll be working in the house and think to myself that "I must remember to ask DH ..." or I will LOL to myself if I think something is funny.

YES!!! I teach 9th grade English, and I get "jk" or :) (emoticons) in formal writing!!! Drives me absolutely nuts! The worst was this past semester - the kids were working on a research essay, and apparently I didn't make it clear that "essay" means WRITING - one kid had to redo his essay because most of it was pictures that he'd printed from the internet! AAARRGGGHH!!!

I've been online since early 2000. Been on this board for several years and then left in February of 2004 because of something a thoroughly nasty troll did.
I can't say I've spoken in BB jargon, but I certainly know all of it and can translate for my less-experienced friends.
I do enjoy sending them notes saying ROFLMAOPIMPTIME and seeing what they make of it.

LOL...I have not used any BB talk out loud but think it in my head all the time.
This is not related to BB's but the computer in general...when I have to scan a real book or magazine for information I really keep thinking I can CTRL+F to find the word or phrase I am looking for..I am really frustrated that I have to scan through so many words to find what I am looking for

I don't use the jargon or abbreviations in conversation, but I constantly find myself wanting to flash people one of these :p  :D ;)  while I'm talking to them! I'll picture it in my mind and wish I had little flashcards. How pathetic is that?! :o

I have never spoken in abbreviations but once when terrible hurricanes were hitting Florida I told DH that I was worried sick because I hadn't heard from my friend and was afraid the hurricane got her. He said he didn't realize I had any close friends in Florida and then I realized it was someone from the board whom I had, of course, never really met. Sort of hard to explain to someone who has never been a group like this.

i hear you; it has been a problem for me, too. nowadays--and it's easier in summer/warmer months--i have 5 firm, self-imposed rules:
1. turn the 'puter off every night (so that it is not on in the a.m., to tempt me)
2. do not turn it on before 4 p.m., no matter what. it CAN WAIT.
3. limit MB involvement to 2 or 3, at most; scan threads and replies; do not read every word (same as newspapers).
3a. at all costs, avoid blogs and similar sites (like Huffpost ), unless it is your teen hs or college-aged child.
4. definitely do not get dragged into provocative threads, unless, after a day or so, one's conscience mandates a reply.
5. change e-mail address if necessary, but definitely limit email to family and immediate close friends---but phone is very preferable, and email only as a last resort.

If the troll is gone, I may be back. Her/his timing was horrible.
I'm glad to see some much-esteemed faces here still (yours, for example) and see that the sanity and humor is still here.

LOL -- I had a problem with this, too! DD1 has worked online for several years, and kept talking about good friends in places I knew she had never been... like Australia! Turns out, they were BB friends! I didn't understand how you could be 'best friends' with someone just by reading/posting! :o

I am just so glad someone clarified PIMP TIME!!! The only thing I could come up with is what my students say about cars or clothes they like: "Miss, that's pimp-status" or "Miss, his car is pimp"! So glad no one here actually talks like that! (So far! Ha! :p )

Haha - I was talking with DH the other night, and I said "A friend of mine said..." Oh Lord, I then realized I was quoting someone from this board! Luckily, he didn't ask which "friend." How would I explain that?
Is this pitiful?

I catch myself frequently saying, "I know someone who..." Then I have to catch myself and say, well...I don't actually KNOW the person...but I feel like I know a lot ABOUT them. What's really funny is when you don't know the BBer's real name, and you're thinking, "funnybones said...." :p
Dreamer, I think there's definitely some possibilities, especially if we make the signs big enough to hold up while driving! Sometimes if I accidentally cut someone off in traffic I wish I had this one  or this one :o . If a really nice person lets me cut in, I wish I had this one :D .

I love the driving signs!!!!! You painted a vivid picture. I think driving would be a lot more fun if we did this, don't you?!!
Thanks for the laugh (DH loved it too!)!
